STORY 1: Deputies Arrest Third Suspect In Murder Of Football Star Killed Outside Sugarloaf Mills

Gwinnett County sheriff's deputies arrested Kpadeh Jones, a Lawrenceville resident, as the third suspect in the shooting of Elijah DeWitt, a Jefferson High School football standout, killed in a shooting outside Sugarloaf Mills in Lawrenceville last year. Jones, along with Kemare Bryan and Chandler Richardson, faces charges related to DeWitt's murder, including felony and malice murder, aggravated assault, and possession of a firearm during the commission of certain felonies. DeWitt's family filed a lawsuit against the mall's owners, security officials, Dave and Buster's, and five individuals, alleging insufficient measures to address known crime-related issues at the mall before DeWitt's death. The lawsuit is pending in Gwinnett County State Court.

STORY 2: Suwanee’s Shaun King, Lilburn's Diane Owens Recognized for Service to Mercer University’s Board of Trustees

Suwanee's Shaun King and Lilburn's M. Diane Owens were recognized for completing five-year terms on Mercer University’s Board of Trustees. King, senior pastor of Johns Creek Baptist Church, earned his Doctor of Divinity degree in 2018 from the School of Theology. Owens, a retired attorney and former board chair, is a 1977 graduate of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and a 1980 graduate of the Law School. The board also acknowledged other trustees who completed their terms. Nine new trustees were elected, including Nancy Grace and Erin Keller. Thomas P. Bishop was elected as the board chair for 2024.

STORY 3: Sol Systems and Gas South Team Up to Donate $300K in support of STEM Education at Gwinnett schools

Gas South and Sol Systems have collaborated to contribute nearly $300,000 to Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) for STEM education. The funding aims to develop renewable energy learning tools, train teachers, engage students, and support schools in working toward STEM certification. GCPS focuses on preparing students for a future workforce by integrating renewable energy Academic Knowledge and Skills into STEM disciplines. The initiative promotes interdisciplinary learning, critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills necessary for STEM and renewable energy careers. KidWind, a clean energy education leader, will collaborate with GCPS to enhance hands-on learning opportunities for students, including internships and industry partnerships.

STORY 4: Kim Jong Un’s daughter marks a year as country’s propaganda star

In a departure from tradition, North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un's daughter, dubbed the "respected daughter," made her public debut at the test of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) last year, breaking the tradition of keeping leader's children out of the public eye. The daughter, thought to be named Ju Ae, has been used in state propaganda to humanize Kim as a father and convey a message of a new generation ready to lead the family dynasty, reliant on nuclear weapons. The move aims to bolster support for the country's weapons program, emphasizing its role in protecting children from perceived external threats. The daughter has appeared in public 16 times in the past year, often associated with military events. Speculation remains about her potential succession, but given her young age, it is too early to tell. The state propaganda is expected to keep her in a prominent role.

STORY 5: Congressional dysfunction puts the nation’s fiscal reputation at risk

Moody's has downgraded its outlook on the United States from "stable" to "negative," citing "continued political polarization" and the nation's inability to address fiscal challenges. The recent fiscal dysfunction, including the threat of a government shutdown, has consequences for millions and tarnishes the country's reputation for economic responsibility. Moody's first gave the U.S. its highest credit rating in 1917, but the agency lowered its outlook, emphasizing political polarization. The article calls for voters to rebuke those prioritizing partisan politics over national interests, highlighting the need for Congress to transcend partisan agendas to address the nation's challenges.

STORY 6: Sugar Hill City Council Race Headed to a Runoff

In a Sugar Hill City Council race, initially showing Meg Avery defeating Councilwoman Jenn Thatcher by five votes, the certified results, including provisional ballots, now indicate a tie with both candidates receiving 729 votes. The city announced a runoff election for Post #3 on December 5th. The election initially seemed unfavorable for incumbents, as challengers, including Avery, appeared to secure victories. Now, Avery and Thatcher will compete in a runoff, and early voting is scheduled from November 27 to December 1, with election day voting on December 5 at Sugar Hill City Hall.

STORY 7: Steve Gasper Announces Campaign For Gwinnett School Board District 3 Seat

Steve Gasper, a frequent critic of the Gwinnett County Board of Education, has announced his candidacy for the District 3 seat in the May 2024 nonpartisan school board elections. Gasper, a former vice chairman of the Gwinnett Republican Party, has been vocal at school board meetings, criticizing the district's leadership under a Democrat majority. His campaign focuses on empowering educators, ensuring school safety, promoting transparency, fostering community engagement, and delivering high-quality education. Gasper, a former educator and Boy Scout volunteer, aims to bring a fresh and forward-thinking approach to education in Gwinnett County.

STORY 1: Health Department Issues Warning of Possible Hepatitis Exposure at Lawrenceville Restaurant

The Gwinnett County health department issued a warning about potential hepatitis A exposure at Lolita’s Bar and Grill in Lawrenceville. A server at the restaurant was diagnosed with hepatitis A, and customers who ate there from Oct. 24 to Nov. 7 are advised to contact healthcare providers or the Gwinnett County Health Department for hepatitis A vaccine recommendations. The vaccine is available at the health department with no out-of-pocket cost. Hepatitis A is a contagious viral infection with symptoms like nausea, tiredness, stomach pain, and jaundice. The virus spreads through contaminated objects, food, or drinks, often due to inadequate handwashing.

STORY 2: Respiratory virus outlook in Georgia encouraging

State Epidemiologist Dr. Cherie Drenzek reported declining COVID-19 cases as Georgia enters the respiratory virus season, with RSV and flu expected to return to pre-pandemic levels. While COVID-19, RSV, and flu trends show improvement, Drenzek emphasized the combined threat, urging caution. Although deaths and hospitalizations from COVID are at their lowest since the pandemic's start, circulating variants pose a wildcard. While positive RSV tests dropped from 21% to 10%, hospitalizations for infants and young children are a concern. Flu cases are rising but represent only 4% of outpatient doctor visits, mainly affecting children aged 0-4.

STORY 3: Bulls, Bands and Barrels — a fusion of rodeo and country music — coming to Gwinnett's Gas South Arena

Gwinnett's Gas South Arena will host Bulls, Bands, and Barrels (BBB), a unique event merging rodeo, music, and entertainment, on January 27, marking the start of BBB's inaugural national tour. The 21-city tour features elite bull riders, cowgirls navigating barrels, and freestyle bullfighting. The show also includes performances by country music artists such as Warren Zeiders, Sam Barber, and Alexandra Kay. BBB President Hunter Price sees the tour as a game-changer, expanding the venture to a national scale with Peachtree Entertainment and Premier Productions. Tickets for the Gas South Arena show go on sale to the public on Friday at 10 a.m.

Norcross-based Willis Mechanical Inc. received the HIRE Vets Medallion Award from the U.S. Department of Labor in the Platinum Level division for its commitment to recruiting, employing, and retaining military veterans. This marks the fourth time the HVAC and refrigeration services company has received the award. With about 50 employees, a quarter to a third of whom are veterans, Willis Mechanical emphasizes supporting veterans in their transition to civilian work. The HIRE Vets Medallion Award recognizes companies that demonstrate dedication to hiring and retaining veterans, acknowledging the valuable contributions veterans make in the workplace. The award highlights Willis Mechanical's ongoing commitment to hiring veterans.

STORY 5: LAKO: Understanding the impact of coupon rates and yield to maturity

Many investors are concerned about low bond yields, holding bonds at 3.25% while new bonds yield around 4.60%. The confusion often arises between a bond's coupon rate and yield to maturity. The coupon rate is fixed, representing annual interest payments, while yield to maturity varies based on factors like time and bond price. Investors should consider yield to maturity when buying bonds at a price not equal to par value. Selling existing bonds to chase higher yields may lead to losses due to declining prices. The focus should be on protecting principal and fulfilling spending needs upon maturity, considering factors like current yields and maturity dates.

Terrance Alonzo Washington, accused of shooting his ex-girlfriend and her son in a domestic incident, is now facing murder charges as the son, Daqwayvious Kleckley, succumbed to his injuries. The shooting occurred in unincorporated Lawrenceville on Nov. 7. Washington initially faced charges like aggravated assault and firearm possession. With Daqwayvious Kleckley's death, Washington is additionally charged with felony murder and malice murder. The police responded to a domestic dispute report, discovering the victims in the driveway, and Washington was later apprehended in Warner Robins. The mother, Deyawnday Kleckley, is still undergoing treatment for her wounds.

STORY 7: Appellate court to hear arguments over Trump’s rhetoric in federal trial on 2020 election

Former President Donald Trump's appeal to lift a partial gag order in the criminal case accusing him of crimes related to overturning the 2020 election will be heard in a Washington, D.C., appeals court. Trump, seeking to speak freely about the case during his reelection bid, faces restrictions after making statements about witnesses and prosecutors that could incite violence. The appeal challenges the order by District Judge Tanya S. Chutkan, arguing it infringes on Trump's free speech rights. Legal experts note the case's unique challenges due to Trump's significant social media presence and political influence. The appeal hearing will address the core issues of free speech and the court's duty to control proceedings.

A former Lanier High School bus driver resigned and was arrested following allegations of "inappropriate contact" with students on the bus. STORY 2: Georgia Gwinnett College Nursing Program Reaccredited

The accreditation, based on CCNE's 2018 Standards for Accreditation of Baccalaureate and Graduate Nursing Programs, is valid for 10 years. The achievement reflects the program's consistent high quality and the dedication of faculty, staff, and students. The nursing program, known for its selectivity, will surpass 400 graduates at the upcoming commencement ceremony, with a strong record of over 90% first-time pass rates on the NCLEX professional licensing exam. The spring 2023 graduating class achieved a 100% first-time pass rate.

She's also working on an adaptation for a pilot based on one of her novels and overseeing the filming of "The Reformatory." Genetic testing can identify familial hypercholesteremia (FH), an inherited condition affecting around 1 in 250 people, often without visible signs until a heart attack occurs. Research from the HerediGene: Population Study, part of a large DNA mapping initiative, suggests that genetic screening can identify individuals with FH, making them candidates for targeted treatment to prevent heart attacks, strokes, and death. The study highlights the importance of genetic testing for individuals with unexplained high cholesterol, enabling aggressive treatment and reducing the risk of major heart events. Early intervention through medication can enhance the quality of life and save lives.

STORY 5: 2 ways to get a ‘do-over’ on Social Security

You can get a "do-over" on your Social Security benefits in certain circumstances, allowing you to secure a higher monthly benefit. If you filed for benefits before full retirement age and are not yet 70, you can suspend your benefits, earning delayed retirement credits of up to 8% annually. Alternatively, if you started receiving benefits less than 12 months ago, you can withdraw your benefits and refile later, increasing your potential benefit. It's essential to understand the differences between suspension and withdrawal, including when you can file and the repayment of benefits. Consultation with a retirement advisor is recommended due to Social Security's complexities.

STORY 1: 'Why the Bible Began' author Jacob Wright to speak at the Lawrenceville library next week

Emory University professor Jacob Wright's book "Why the Bible Began" has gained unexpected popularity beyond academic circles, with a New Yorker review by Adam Gopnik fueling interest. The book explores an alternative history of scripture and its origins, challenging conventional perspectives. Wright contends that the Bible, written by a small group of scribes, serves as a social and political tome that shapes the world's destiny. Despite the complexity of its stories and enduring relevance, the Bible is not a book of pat answers but one full of questions. Wright discusses his work at a Gwinnett Public Library author talk at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, November 15th. Get more stories like this at gwinnettdailypost.com

STORY 2: Key Roads in Gwinnett County being considered for 'Smart Corridors' transformation

Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry highlighted projects in Gwinnett County aimed at transforming key roads into "smart corridors." These corridors will employ technology to transmit information, such as traffic signal status and roadwork updates, to vehicles on the road. The projects involve running fiber optic connectivity to traffic signals and control devices along Buford Highway, Arcado Road, and State Route 120. The smart corridor initiative, a collaboration between the state and Gwinnett County, aims to enhance connectivity and prepare for future transportation technology, where cars will communicate with traffic signals for improved safety and efficiency.

STORY 3: Nearly a dozen people treated for possible drug overdose at Stone Mountain tavern

Nearly a dozen individuals at Will Henry's Tavern in south Gwinnett experienced possible cocaine overdoses, requiring treatment on Thursday night. Gwinnett County police responded to a medical call, finding nine people being treated by fire officials. While the substance hasn't been lab-confirmed, witnesses claimed it was cocaine. Investigations are ongoing to identify the source of the substance. Three individuals were taken to the hospital, while the others declined transportation.

Racing in her second IRONMAN triathlon world championship in Kona, Hawaii, James also coached another athlete. Inspired by personal loss, she began coaching over a year ago, emphasizing balance and avoiding overtraining. James, a former Stanford University cross-country runner, has completed over 20 IRONMAN races, balancing her athletic pursuits with a demanding career and family life. Coaching around ten athletes, James helps them build endurance, strategize training, and find balance in their lives.

Blue Spring State Park in Florida has introduced a tracked chair program to enhance accessibility for people with mobility impairments. Visitors can now reserve motorized wheelchairs with all-terrain rubber tracks for exploring the park's rugged trails. The blue EcoRover chairs, made available by Friends of Seminole State Forest, can be reserved free of charge through an online system. The program aims to make the park's natural beauty more accessible to individuals with disabilities and out-of-state visitors. Another tracked chair is available at DeLeon Springs State Park, with the program offering enhanced experiences for an estimated one million visitors annually.

Gwinnett County's Veteran and Family Services Center Helps Vets Navigate Process Of Getting Help

Lilburn resident and retired Army Sgt. Joseph Acquista sought help for PTSD symptoms at Gwinnett County’s Veteran and Family Services Center. The center, a partnership between the county and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, assists veterans in navigating the VA process and provides resources. Gwinnett County Commissioner Jasper Watkins, a veteran, emphasizes the importance of the center's spacious and relaxed environment. The recent Stand Down event showcased the center's services, featuring U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath and various booths. Gwinnett County aims to support veterans, expanding services to include families. Visibility remains a challenge, but the center's impact is growing, helping veterans with diverse needs, including housing and financial assistance. STORY 1: Gwinnett County's Veteran and Family Services Center Helps Vets Navigate Process Of Getting Help

The Gwinnett County Veterans and Family Services Center in Lawrenceville, Georgia, is providing essential assistance to veterans, offering guidance on navigating the Veterans Administration and accessing mental health services. The center, established in collaboration with Disabled American Veterans Chapter 90, aims to address the needs of veterans and their families. The facility has expanded space compared to its previous location, and Gwinnett County Commissioner Jasper Watkins emphasized the importance of creating a comfortable environment for veterans to decompress. The center recently hosted a Stand Down event, providing veterans and their families with information, health screenings, and support services.

STORY 2: Piedmont Eastside Recognizes Gwinnett Fire Supervisor As A Hero

Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Service Lt. Sam Ballouk has been recognized as a "Hero" by Piedmont Eastside Medical Center for his commitment to community safety. Ballouk, who serves as the A-Shift medical supervisor, has extensive experience in the fire department and worked as a paramedic for Walton County EMS. The recognition is part of Piedmont Eastside's First Friday Hero program, which acknowledges first responders exceeding their duty. Ballouk expressed his dedication to the EMS field, emphasizing the importance of treating every patient with respect and fostering collaboration between fire, EMS, and hospitals.

STORY 3: Georgia Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry Says State's Work With Gwinnett County On Smart Corridors Is The Future Of Travel

Georgia Department of Transportation Commissioner Russell McMurry discussed future transportation plans during a presentation to the Gwinnett Chamber. Emphasizing the importance of technology, McMurry highlighted smart corridors in Gwinnett County, where fiber optic connectivity to traffic signals aims to communicate information to vehicles. The projects on Buford Highway, Arcado Road, and State Route 120 involve underground infrastructure, making the changes noninvasive for drivers. McMurry anticipates increased technology integration, allowing cars to receive traffic signal information and potentially act independently based on safety parameters. The initiatives align with Georgia's commitment to advancing transportation technology.

STORY 4: Editorial: Toxic politics envelop noble AIDS program

The President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR), initiated by President George W. Bush in 2003, faces challenges as some lawmakers allege the Biden administration of promoting abortion in the program. PEPFAR has played a crucial role in combating AIDS globally, saving an estimated 25 million lives and preventing infections in infants. Despite enjoying bipartisan support in the past, recent claims have delayed reauthorization and hindered fund disbursement. Critics argue that the allegations lack substance, and PEPFAR's focus remains on HIV prevention and treatment. The delay in funding could impact the program's effectiveness and raise questions about the nation's commitment to global health initiatives.

STORY 5: Special toothpaste could save lives of people with peanut allergies

A specialized toothpaste containing tiny amounts of peanut could offer a breakthrough in treating peanut allergies. The toothpaste, part of Oral Mucosal Immunotherapy (OMIT), aims to build patients' immunity by exposing them to small amounts of the allergen over time. In a trial, all participants tolerated the highest dose of peanut toothpaste without severe reactions. OMIT could be a safe and convenient option for adults with food allergies, supporting continued development, according to allergy expert Dr. William Berger. The results encourage further exploration of the toothpaste's potential, particularly in pediatric populations.

STORY 6: Kentucky’s Constitution still allows for slavery. A group of teens is pushing to change it

The existence of an exception clause in Section 25 of the Kentucky Constitution that allows slavery and involuntary servitude as punishment for crime. The clause, similar to the 13th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, has raised concerns, prompting efforts to remove it through a constitutional amendment. Members of the South Elkhorn Christian Church youth group testified before the legislature's Joint Commission on Race and Access to Opportunity Committee, urging the removal of the exception clause. Advocates argue that the clause has historical ties to discriminatory practices and systemic racism, emphasizing the need for constitutional change.

STORY 7: Beer industry enters fray in battle over rum tax benefits

The beer lobby is challenging the renewal of a tax benefit for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, known as the "rum cover-over," claiming it unfairly subsidizes rum-producing competitors. The tax dispute arises amid broader tensions between the beer and spirits industries over the taxation of new alcoholic beverage options. The beer lobby argues that the rum cover-over program benefits large liquor companies and calls for a reevaluation of the program to ensure the territories receive appropriate assistance. The disagreement adds complexity to the potential renewal of the rum cover-over as part of a year-end tax package.
