Gwinnett County Police will Meet with Norcross Residents to Address Public Safety Concerns
The Gwinnett County police in Norcross will hold a second community meeting this year to address public safety concerns. The meeting will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the Universal Church on 6081 Singleton Road. Gwinnett Police Chief J.D. McClure is expected to participate. This initiative aims to strengthen community relationships and bridge gaps between law enforcement and the residents they serve. The first meeting in March was in response to crimes against the Hispanic community, including the murder of Susana Morales, allegedly by a former Doraville police officer. Concerns were also raised about handling missing persons cases and conclusions in other cases involving Hispanic residents. Spanish-speaking translators will be available at the meeting.

STORY 1: Man laid to rest 80 years after his death in World War II
First Lt. Edward T. McGuire, a World War II pilot who died in 1943 when his B-24 Liberator bomber crashed near Ploiesti, Romania, during Operation Tidal Wave, was honored with a military funeral 80 years after his death. The recovery of his remains in 2017 marked the beginning of a multiyear identification process. Operation Tidal Wave aimed to take out German oil refineries in Romania but was fraught with errors, including flying low over the targets. McGuire's great-nephew, Mike McAuliffe, said the ceremony brought closure to the family, and the procession was attended by community members and veterans.
STORY 2: Commentary: It’s time to say goodbye to changing clocks twice a year
On November 5th at 2 a.m. local time, daylight saving time ends in the United States, and clocks are set back an hour. This practice, involving biannual clock changes, has a long history dating back to Benjamin Franklin. However, there's increasing support to end it permanently. Various factors, including the digital revolution and flexible work schedules, have made clock changes obsolete. In 2021, the Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act, making daylight saving time permanent, but the House didn't follow suit. Senator Marco Rubio reintroduced the bill this year, and a 30-minute permanent shift between standard time and daylight saving time is a potential compromise that could find bipartisan support. The goal is to eliminate the need for biannual time changes.
STORY 3: Oregon cites equity in suspending graduation requirement
The Oregon Board of Education unanimously voted to extend a pause on graduation requirements, including basic reading, writing, and math tests for high school students, which were previously halted during the pandemic. This move is criticized for lowering standards and creating lower expectations, particularly for minority students who are disproportionately affected. Critics argue that disparities in student performance on these tests are seen as proof of racial bias, though other factors, such as poverty rates, family structure, and school quality, also play a significant role. This decision is viewed as a misguided attempt to address educational disparities, with the ultimate consequence of setting up struggling students, especially African American and Hispanic students, for failure.

STORY 4: Scientists discover key to slowing aging
Hungarian scientists have made significant strides in understanding the aging process. They discovered that 'transposable elements' (TEs) in DNA can destabilize the genetic code and cause aging. However, the researchers also identified a specific process called the 'Piwi-piRNA pathway' that controls these TEs. When they enhanced this pathway in experiments with a worm species, the worms showed a lifespan increase of up to 30 percent. By controlling the activity of TEs and understanding epigenetic changes in aging, this research may lead to potential methods for extending human lifespans and determining biological age from DNA. This groundbreaking study was published in the journal Nature Communications.
STORY 5: Americans born in 2019 will spend nearly 40 years taking prescription drugs: study
New research indicates that Americans born in 2019 will spend a significant portion of their lives taking prescription drugs, surpassing the time spent married or in education. For males born in 2019, it's projected to be 48% (approximately 37 years), while for females, it's expected to be 60% (about 47.5 years), with many women starting prescription drug use at age 15. The study, using data from nationally representative surveys, emphasizes the central role prescription drugs play in Americans' lives. Rates of polypharmacy (taking five or more medications) have also risen, with healthcare costs associated with prescription drugs steadily increasing.

STORY 1: Mac Engel: For ex-Texas Ranger Ian Kinsler, there is nothing complicated about the war in Israel
Former Texas Rangers second baseman and current team advisor Ian Kinsler has a personal connection to the conflict in Israel. As a citizen of Israel and a player for the Israeli national baseball team, Kinsler is deeply affected by the events in the country. He revealed that people he knows in Israel have been able to find safety, but others have lost their lives in the ongoing war. Kinsler believes that Israel has the right to protect itself and compares the situation to the 9/11 attacks in the United States. He expressed his thoughts and prayers for those affected and hopes for a swift resolution to the conflict. As incidents of antisemitism have increased since the conflict began, Kinsler also spoke out against antisemitism, stating that it should not be happening. Having visited the places that were attacked, Kinsler has a firsthand understanding of the impact of the war, particularly in areas like Gaza where bomb shelters are prevalent and the remnants of past conflicts still remain.
STORY 2: Despite Economic Struggles, Norcross Continues To See Business, Residential Development Activity
The city of Norcross has seen a slowdown in speculative development due to higher interest rates and longer loan approval times. Despite this, there are several projects under construction or being planned in the city, and businesses are moving to or expanding in the area. The economic development director mentioned that the slowdown in development allows the city to focus on supporting existing businesses. One significant project in progress is the 280-unit Prose Norcross residential development by Alliance Residential, set to open next summer. Additionally, there are plans for a new parking lot, housing redevelopment, a senior veteran residential development, and various businesses opening in the downtown area. ChefSuite, a ghost kitchen operator, is also coming to Buford Highway, offering kitchen space for a variety of culinary businesses.
STORY 3: Duluth Police Arrest 45-Year-Old Man After Fatal Hit-And-Run
A man, Nidar Ballan-Bellan, has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide and hit and run in connection with a pedestrian's death. The incident occurred on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Duluth in the early morning hours of October 23. Cassius Franswah, the 26-year-old pedestrian, was hit by a car and later pronounced dead at the hospital. The Duluth Police Department's Accident Investigation Unit conducted an investigation, identifying the type of vehicle involved as a Nissan Sentra. Using their Real-Time Crime Center's cameras, they tracked the vehicle to a specific area within the city, leading to Ballan-Bellan's arrest. He faces felony charges related to the incident.

STORY 4: Suwanee voters must decide two City Council races
In Suwanee's upcoming municipal election on November 7, there will be at least one leadership change. Post 1 Councilwoman Heather Hall is not seeking re-election, and three candidates are running to replace her: Karim Ladha, Julianna McConnell, and Glenn Weyant. Additionally, Post 2 Councilman Larry Pettiford is facing an opponent, Bradley Golz, in his re-election bid. However, the mayoral race is unopposed, as Mayor Jimmy Burnette is running for re-election without any challengers.
STORY 5: San Diego jail populations plummeted during the pandemic. It didn't impact crime, researchers say
A study conducted by researchers at the University of California, Irvine, and the University of Arizona focused on six California counties and found that plummeting inmate populations during the pandemic, driven by bail rule changes and decarceration efforts, did not consistently impact violent or property crime rates. While some counties experienced crime increases linked to reduced jail populations, others saw no correlation between these factors. The study's findings suggest that crime trends were influenced by factors beyond decarceration efforts and provide evidence that reducing inmate populations may not negatively affect public safety, supporting the case for criminal reform measures.

STORY 6: Can Hamas war give Republicans a new chance to woo pro-Israel voters in 2024?
The Republican Jewish Coalition's annual leadership summit was held in Las Vegas with all major GOP presidential candidates and other party officials in attendance. The event provided an opportunity for Republican candidates to show their support for Israel, which is a priority for many Republican voters and Jewish Americans. Although the majority of American Jews identify as Democrats, Republicans have made some inroads among Jewish voters, particularly on foreign policy issues. The recent conflict between Israel and Hamas has brought Israel back to the center of American Jewish life, and the candidates hope to attract Jewish voters in key battleground states such as Pennsylvania. While the Republican Party's pro-Israel stance may appeal to some Jewish voters, many of their values align with the Democratic Party. President Joe Biden's response to the conflict has earned him high marks even among some Republicans.
STORY 7: Norcross Adopts Master Arts and Cultural Plan
The City of Norcross has adopted the Norcross Master Arts and Cultural Plan, aiming to expand its public art identity, celebrate its cultural diversity, and recognize its history. This plan, developed over 14 years by the Norcross Public Arts Commission, will enrich the lives of citizens and stakeholders through arts and culture. The plan focuses on public art like sculptures, mosaics, and murals, fostering connections, encouraging dialogue, and exploring the city's rich history. Several public art projects are already in progress, with calls for artists issued to beautify public fences, create a gateway to Heritage Park, and craft interactive murals. Residents and local artists are encouraged to participate in shaping the city's artistic future.
We’ll have final thoughts after this.

STORY 1: History comes alive at Georgia Gwinnett College with ancient tools demonstration
The Arctos Anthropology Club at Georgia Gwinnett College had a demonstration by primitive-living expert Andrew Minnick, who showcased tool-making technologies from the Stone Ages and the pre-contact period in the Americas. Students had the opportunity to learn about ancient tools and try their hand at making them. They explored tools like the Atlatl for hunting and engaged in "flint knapping" to shape stones into tools and decorative pieces. The experience emphasized the sophistication of early human problem-solving and highlighted the importance of preserving knowledge about ancient technologies and their impact on human evolution, history, and culture.
STORY 2: Editorial: Sidney Powell should turn in her Texas bar card
Sidney Powell, the former lawyer for Donald Trump, pleaded guilty to six reduced criminal charges in Georgia stemming from her efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election. However, in Dallas, she continues to fight a disciplinary lawsuit filed by the State Bar of Texas, which accuses her of violating ethics rules by filing frivolous voter fraud lawsuits in multiple states. In a recent filing, Powell claims the bar lacks evidence to support its case. The editorial calls for her to surrender her Texas bar card and be consistent in her actions, arguing that Powell's conspiracy theories have been discredited, and her legal fight is a waste of taxpayer money.
STORY 3: Renova Technology Adding 30 Jobs After $600,000 Expansion In Norcross
Renova Technology Inc., an after-market repair services company, celebrated the grand opening of its expanded facility in Norcross, Gwinnett County. Renova, which has been in the county for 22 years, invested $600,000 in the expansion, with plans to create 30 new jobs in customer service, marketing, sales, and repair work. The company's growth was supported by organizations like Partnership Gwinnett, the Georgia Department of Economic Development, Metro Atlanta Chamber, Georgia Power, Gwinnett County Government, and the Gateway85 Community Improvement District. Local officials and leaders welcomed Renova's expansion, highlighting the company's contribution to the local economy.

STORY 4: American dams are being demolished. And nature is pushing that along
Dams in the American West are being removed to address their declining power output, environmental damage, and the maintenance challenges they pose. The removal of dams in places like the Klamath River near the California-Oregon border is part of a trend that has seen more than 1,600 dams removed in the U.S. since 1912. Dams have outlived their usefulness, and their removal is seen as a step toward rewilding America. The Klamath River's dams were initially built for power generation, but they generated less than 2% of the power supplied by their utility in recent years. The Klamath restoration also involves partnerships with Native American communities to assert ancestral rights and promote river health.
STORY 5: Simple diet changes can improve health and reduce carbon emissions: study
A new study suggests that making simple diet swaps, such as switching from beef to chicken or using plant-based milk instead of cow's milk, can reduce the average carbon footprint of food by 35% and improve the nutritional quality of diets. The research, based on the analysis of diet data from over 7,700 Americans, encourages climate-friendly eating habits to cut carbon emissions from food production, which accounts for a significant portion of greenhouse gas emissions. The study recommends easily achievable dietary substitutions to promote both environmental sustainability and personal health, emphasizing the potential of small changes to have a significant impact on both fronts.

STORY 6: It takes the average parent this long to get their kids to fall asleep
A study of 1,000 parents with kids aged 0-8 has found that it takes an average of an hour to get each child to sleep every night. Nearly 80% of parents have to read up to three bedtime stories before their children settle down. More than 60% of parents struggle to get their kids to sleep, with many resorting to stalling tactics like asking questions (31%), needing to find a special toy (23%), feeling too hot or cold (29%), claiming to be scared of the dark (25%), or hearing strange noises (17%). Some even claim there's a monster under the bed (19%). The research was commissioned by the children's TV show Hey Duggee to mark the launch of its new Sleepy Time bedtime toy.
STORY 7: 'Lawrenceville Blooms' mural completed
The city of Lawrenceville, Georgia, has unveiled its completed community mural, named "Lawrenceville Blooms." This mural project was a collaborative effort between the Lawrenceville Arts Commission and local artist Teresa Abboud. The mural is located at the intersection of Jackson Street and Buford Drive and covers 1,867 square feet. The project began with an open call for designs and was approved by the City Council in April 2023. The artwork is seen as a symbol of unity and diversity in the community and showcases the flourishing arts scene in Lawrenceville. It was created with community involvement, and the artist put in over 300 hours to bring it to life. The mural aims to inspire and connect the community through art.

STORY 1: Buford alum Elexa Bahr to face USWNT with Colombia after historic Women’s World Cup run
Elexa Bahr, a former Buford High School alum, has experienced a remarkable soccer journey, representing various countries in her career. After playing professional soccer in Colombia and Australia, she recently participated in the 2023 Women's World Cup as a part of Colombia's first-ever quarterfinal run. Currently playing for América de Cali in Colombia, Elexa was called up to the Colombian national team. Her ability to represent different nations, including the United States, Honduras, and Colombia, led to her becoming a key player for Colombia. Her family, including her parents, watched her games in the Women's World Cup despite the distance. Elexa's future goals include facing the U.S. women's national team and participating in the 2024 Olympics in Paris with her Colombian team. Her soccer journey has been an inspiration to her family, proving that anything is possible.
STORY 2: Prosecutors Questions Lead To Mistrial In Peachtree Corners Gas Station Murder Case
A mistrial has been declared in the trial of three suspects accused of murdering Bradley Coleman, a coach and Norcross high school graduate, during a failed carjacking in July 2022. The mistrial was declared due to actions by prosecutors during the trial. Prosecutors recalled a witness and appeared to lead her into saying her boyfriend had committed the murder, which the defense raised objections to. The judge agreed with the defense and declared a mistrial for all three defendants. The DA's Office plans to retry the case, but the mistrial may add tension to the race for district attorney in the upcoming election.
STORY 3: Lake Lanier, Coolray Field to host National Professional Fishing League finale
The 2023 National Professional Fishing League is concluding its schedule from October 26 to 28 on Lake Lanier, hosted by the Gwinnett County Sports Commission. The event includes community outreach on October 25, practice sessions from October 22 to 24, and main events from Thursday to Saturday. STORY 4: A failure to deliver for our children
A shortage of the groundbreaking infant immunization nirsevimab is putting thousands of infants and toddlers at risk of RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) hospitalization. This monoclonal antibody prevents RSV hospitalizations by 70%, but supply constraints are limiting its availability. The only manufacturer, Sanofi, recently announced a supply shortage, even though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommended nirsevimab for every child under 8 months during the RSV season. The CDC's response to the shortage is to prioritize high-risk infants. The shortage highlights systemic issues in children's healthcare, and the article emphasizes the need to prioritize child health, citing the rapid response to COVID-19 for adults and the consequences of the vaccine delay for young children.
STORY 5: New blood test can help diagnose bipolar disorder
Researchers at Cambridge University have developed a blood test to help diagnose bipolar disorder, which is often misdiagnosed as major depressive disorder. The test, used in combination with an online psychiatric assessment, identified biomarkers associated with the condition and was effective at diagnosing bipolar disorder in patients. While a psychiatric assessment is the most effective way to diagnose bipolar disorder, patients often face long waits and delays. The blood test, which is still a proof of concept, could be used to differentiate between the two disorders and provide quicker and more accurate diagnoses.

STORY 6: 20-year-old Shot Dead Near Gwinnett Shopping Center Over the Weekend
In the early hours of Saturday morning, a shooting investigation in Gwinnett County was initiated following a call to Northside Hospital's Sandy Springs campus. The hospital contacted police after friends brought in a 20-year-old man from Norcross with a gunshot wound. Unfortunately, the man succumbed to his injuries. Detectives believe the shooting occurred at a business along Jimmy Carter Boulevard, although the victim's identity has not been released. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact them or provide tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers, which offers a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment.
STORY 7: Economic Signals: Understanding the Leading Economic Indicators
The U.S. economy presents mixed signals, with some indicators suggesting a recession while others show growth. To make economic predictions, financial analysts and economists rely on the Leading Economic Indicators (LEI). The LEI, published by The Conference Board, combines 10 data sources, both financial and non-financial, such as the S&P 500 Index, unemployment claims, and average consumer expectations. These components cover various aspects of economic activity and provide insight into future economic conditions. However, the LEI is not a perfect system, as it doesn't provide precise timing for economic changes, and indicators can fluctuate without leading to a recession. While investors can use the LEI for tactical decisions, their overall portfolio strategy should remain consistent in different economic conditions.

STORY 1: Body of Man Who Jumped Off Jet Ski Recovered in Lake Lanier
A tragic incident occurred at Lake Lanier when Walter Guardado, who went missing on Saturday after jumping off a jet ski, was found dead. Guardado was at East Bank Park with his girlfriend when he jumped off his jet ski and attempted to swim back to shore. His girlfriend couldn't locate him, leading to a search by Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services and the Hall County Fire Department over the weekend. On Monday, divers from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources located Guardado approximately 20 feet underwater, confirming his drowning.
STORY 2: Vehicle emissions inspector from Gwinnett County pleads guilty to falsifying thousands of test results
Mehboobhusain Malik, a vehicle emissions inspector from Gwinnett County, Georgia, has pleaded guilty to a Clean Air Act violation for conducting thousands of fraudulent emissions tests. Malik used a simulator to manipulate the results of emissions tests for vehicles that couldn't pass legitimately. He carried out these fraudulent tests at multiple locations across the metro Atlanta area. The case underscores the collaboration between local, state, and federal agencies in upholding and enforcing laws aimed at safeguarding human health and air quality. Malik is set to be sentenced in January and faces legal consequences for his actions. The investigation involved the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Criminal Investigation Division.
STORY 3: Daily cup of tea or coffee can keep you stronger in old age: study
Drinking coffee and tea in midday may reduce the likelihood of physical frailty in later life, according to a study by the National University of Singapore. The research, involving 12,000 participants aged 45 to 74, found that caffeine was key to these benefits. Those who consumed four or more cups of coffee daily had the best results. However, drinking black and green tea also showed benefits. Coffee and tea accounted for the majority of caffeine intake in the group. The study concluded that higher caffeine intake was associated with lower odds of physical frailty, regardless of the source of caffeine. It suggested that further research is needed to identify the exact ingredients and mechanisms behind this association.

STORY 4: Study says new dads should be screened for depression
A study from the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) suggests that new fathers should be screened for postpartum depression. The research discovered that 30% of American dads screened had postpartum depression, and experts emphasize the link between mothers' and fathers' mental health. Fathers were screened using the same mental health tool as mothers, and the UIC study showed higher rates of depression than previous studies, possibly due to the participants facing structural racism and prejudice. Lead author Dr. Sam Wainwright highlights the importance of fathers taking care of their mental health for the sake of their partners, babies, and themselves.
STORY 5: Many women can’t access miscarriage drug because it’s also used for abortions
Many women experiencing pregnancy loss, including miscarriages, are unable to access mifepristone, a drug that could ease the process. In the United States, mifepristone is primarily associated with abortion and heavily regulated. Misoprostol, a less effective drug, is often the alternative. The two-drug protocol combining mifepristone and misoprostol is recommended for miscarriage management, but just 1% of patients receive it. Multiple factors, including regulatory, cultural, and political influences, limit access to mifepristone, depriving many patients of better care for miscarriages and potentially complicating their situations. Efforts to make mifepristone more available for miscarriage patients face opposition from anti-abortion groups. Advocates are calling for an official indication for mifepristone in miscarriage management to improve access and legitimization.
