STORY 1: Man arrested for shooting mother and son in driveway of their Lawrenceville area home

Terrance Alonzo Washington was arrested in Warner Robins after shooting a 44-year-old mother and her 20-year-old son in the driveway of their Lawrenceville home. The victims were critically injured and taken to the hospital. The shooting, believed to be domestic-related, occurred after police were dispatched to a domestic dispute call. Washington, who had a prior relationship with the female victim, faces charges including two counts of aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and theft by taking. The victims were shot in the head, and the investigation is ongoing……….Read more at gwinnettdailypost.com

STORY 2: Why these five moms jumped out of a plane together

Five moms, bonded by the loss of their children to brain tumors, formed a close friendship and raised £70,700 for the Tessa Jowell Foundation by skydiving together. Louise Fox, Niki O'Dea Patel, Nikki Treharne, Clair Todd, and Katie Dove lost their children between 2020 and 2022. They connected on Facebook during their children's treatments and formed the "Forever Moms of Brain Tumor Angels" group. Their skydive helped them feel closer to their children in heaven. The funds raised will support brain cancer research. The moms are praised for channeling their pain into raising awareness and funds for others.

STORY 3: LAKO: The power of Georgia's unique tax credits for community impact

Georgia offers unique tax credits allowing taxpayers to redirect their funds to specific causes or organizations. These credits include Qualified Education Expense, Foster Child Donation, Law Enforcement Donation, and Rural Hospital Organization Expense Credits. By contributing to approved organizations, taxpayers receive a dollar-for-dollar reduction in state tax liability. Credits are subject to caps and require pre-approval through the Georgia Tax Center. Contributions beyond the tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years. The process involves applying for approval, making a payment within 60 days of approval, and receiving acknowledgment for tax filing. These credits empower taxpayers to support causes meaningful to them.

STORY 4: Editorial: For the sake of the nation, Mr. President, please bow out

The U.S. faces a concerning political moment with former President Trump's plans and a poll showing him beating President Biden in battleground states. Despite Biden's successes, a New York Times/Siena College poll reveals Trump leading in five out of six crucial states, attributing it largely to Biden's perceived age (81). Calls for Biden to forgo reelection intensify to avoid an existential threat to democracy. Trump's autocratic tendencies post-presidency raise concerns, as plans include using the Justice Department against critics and deploying the military against protests. Urgent pleas urge Biden to step aside and avoid risking Trump's return.

STORY 5: Device that ‘smells’ seawater being used to search for new medicines

Scientists have developed a device, the In Situ Marine moleculE Logger (I-SMEL), which "smells" seawater to capture and analyze dissolved compounds from marine organisms. This non-invasive tool was tested in Mediterranean Sea caves and proved promising for drug discovery. The I-SMEL, handled by divers, uses disks to concentrate dissolved molecules released by sponges and other organisms. The researchers identified diverse compounds, including unknown structures, with potential applications in medicine. The device offers a way to study underwater ecosystems' health and discover new natural products without harming fragile environments. The team aims to adapt the device for remote operation in deeper waters.

STORY 1: Peach Pass is Now Accepted in Six More States Through Agreement with E-ZPass

Peach Pass users in metro Atlanta can now use it on toll lanes in six more states through an agreement with E-ZPass, expanding the convenience of toll payments. The states included are Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, and Rhode Island, joining Florida and North Carolina, which had pre-existing agreements with Georgia. This interoperability plan aims to make Peach Pass and E-ZPass compatible with each other in several more states by winter 2024. Both Peach Pass and E-ZPass users can enjoy smoother travel in participating states, providing greater convenience and flexibility for toll payments. Georgia also has similar agreements with Florida and North Carolina for different toll payment systems.

STORY 2: Children’s Museum of Atlanta Honors Brenda Reid with Power of Play Award

The Children's Museum of Atlanta has awarded Brenda Reid the prestigious Power of Play award, recognizing her dedication to fostering opportunities for the next generation through community involvement and service on children's organization boards in Atlanta. Reid is the Community Relations Manager for Publix Super Markets' Atlanta division and an alumna of Clark Atlanta University. The 2024 Imagination Ball, an adults-only charity event aimed at promoting play-based learning for children from all backgrounds, will be held on March 23, 2024. The award celebrates individuals who embody the museum's mission of encouraging children's imagination, exploration, and learning through the transformative power of play.

STORY 3: How an extinct human ancestor’s gene may affect our mental health

A study reveals that an extinct human ancestor, the Denisovans, might have contributed to certain gene mutations affecting our mental health when they bred with modern humans. The genetic variant linked to zinc regulation, which Denisovans passed on to some of us through interbreeding, makes carriers more susceptible to conditions like anorexia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, schizophrenia, and depression. The mutation likely helped ancestral populations of sapiens adapt to cold climates. While the adaptation has a geographical scope encompassing different populations around the world, it is notably less frequent in African populations. Further research, including animal models, may offer insights into this predisposition to mental illnesses.

STORY 4: Analysis: Sweep or split? Either is likely given Trump, Biden liabilities

With a year to go until the 2024 elections, the outcome remains uncertain. Narrow majorities in the House and Senate, coupled with a volatile presidential race, mean that anything from a single-party sweep to a split partisan decision is possible. It could be a strong year for the GOP, with opportunities to take the White House and Senate. However, Democrats also have a chance to win the presidency and the House. The presidential race is likely to center on the economy and other key issues, with each party emphasizing issues that benefit their candidates. Regardless, the top of the ticket will set the tone for down-ballot races, where the correlation between presidential and congressional results is high.

STORY 5: Study reveals mental and physical benefits of playing golf

A study has found that playing a round of golf or walking six kilometers can significantly improve immediate cognitive function in people over 65. The research involved 25 healthy older golfers who participated in three different exercises: an 18-hole golf round, a 6km Nordic walking session, and a 6km regular walking session. All three exercises improved lower cognitive functions, and Nordic walking and regular walking also enhanced executive functions. The findings highlight the value of age-appropriate aerobic exercise, such as golf and walking, in maintaining and enhancing cognitive function among older adults.

STORY 1: Implant that turns brain signals into words could give a voice to those unable to talk

A new brain implant, the size of a postage stamp and containing 256 microscopic sensors, can decode brain signals from the speech center to predict what sounds someone is trying to say. This technology allows thoughts to be turned into words, potentially giving a voice to those unable to speak, including individuals with 'locked-in' syndrome and motor disorders. The device was successfully tested on four patients requiring brain surgery, showing the potential to significantly improve communication for people with speech impairments. Researchers are now working on a cordless version of the implant to enhance mobility and convenience.

STORY 2: Duluth police charge Lawrenceville man with elder abuse after mother found in unsanitary environment

A Lawrenceville man, Tony Sherman, is facing accusations of elder abuse after Duluth police found his emaciated and neglected elderly mother in her home. Officers were called to her residence on October 18 by maintenance workers who found her lying in bed, unresponsive and covered in urine. She is in her late 80s. The mother was living in deplorable conditions, with open sores and scabs on her lower back, malnutrition, and poor hygiene. She was eventually taken to the hospital. Sherman had given inconsistent statements about their living arrangements and caregiving, leading to his arrest on charges of abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a disabled or elderly person.

STORY 3: Georgia Gwinnett College to Host Preview Day Nov. 18

Georgia Gwinnett College is hosting its final on-campus Preview Day for 2023 on November 18th. The event, held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., will provide prospective students with information on programs of study, admissions, financial aid, student housing, and more. Participants can take campus tours, interact with student ambassadors, and enjoy a party-like atmosphere with food, music, and giveaways. In alignment with Georgia Apply to College Month, GGC will waive application fees in November. Approximately 82% of GGC students qualify for financial aid. Those interested can learn more and register on GGC's website.

STORY 4: Hamilton Mill apartments proposal sparks push to create City of Mill Creek in northeast Gwinnett

Georgia House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration has proposed the creation of the City of Mill Creek in northeast Gwinnett. The new city is being suggested in response to concerns over zoning issues, such as high-density developments and apartment complexes. If the bill to create the city is approved by the General Assembly, a referendum will be held to let voters decide if the city should be established. The proposed city could potentially be Gwinnett's second-largest, with an estimated population of about 35,000 residents. It is seen as a way to address the community's concerns and have more local control over planning and zoning issues.

STORY 5: John M. Crisp: 3 very dangerous zombie lies

The author discusses the concept of "zombie lies," which are demonstrably false ideas that persist in society. They give examples, including right-wing economic theories, election denial, and the notion that the type of weapon used in a killing is irrelevant. The article highlights the danger of these lies, with the first perpetuating wealth inequality, the second undermining faith in democracy, and the third contributing to the persistence of mass shootings. The author suggests that these lies endure due to the willingness of a minority to believe in them and an indifferent or compliant majority that allows them to persist, resulting in societal harm.

New research warns that zoonotic infections, diseases spread from animals to humans, are increasing at an exponential rate and are predicted to kill 12 times more people in 2050 than in 2020 if current trends continue. Climate change and increasing urbanization are expected to drive the frequency of spillover events, where these diseases transfer to humans. The study focuses on four types of viruses, including Ebola and Marburg viruses, and shows that the number of spillover events and related deaths have been increasing annually between 1963 and 2019. Urgent action is needed to address the growing risk to global health posed by zoonotic infections.

Sugar Hill's newest park, Ridge Lake Park, was officially opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, offering 22 acres of greenspace and a small lake that will be stocked with bass next spring. The park includes Sugar Hill's first dog park and a picnic pavilion, with plans for a dock, gazebo, walking trails, and a disc golf course in the second phase, to be completed by spring. The land was purchased to preserve greenspace along Highway 20. City officials emphasize the importance of protecting greenspace and have added 300 acres of park space in the past two decades.

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday, November 6th and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Hamilton Mill apartments proposal sparks push to create City of Mill Creek in northeast Gwinnett

Georgia House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, R-Dacula, has proposed creating the City of Mill Creek in northeast Gwinnett as a response to zoning concerns, particularly a controversial proposal for 700 apartments near Seckinger High School. The new city would become one of the largest in Gwinnett County if approved by voters. Efstration's bill aims to establish the city, and a referendum would be held to determine its creation. Residents have voiced opposition to the proposed apartments, emphasizing the need for responsible growth and local control over planning and zoning issues. The proposed city would be Gwinnett's second largest, with a population estimate of around 35,000 residents.

            Break 1: PEGGY SLAPPY –

STORY 1: Margaritaville at Lanier Islands Announces Multi-Million Dollar Enhancements

Margaritaville at Lanier Islands in Georgia is planning multi-million-dollar enhancements, including the rebranding of its Water Park to Fins Up Water Park. The new features, set to be completed in spring 2024, include four new waterslide coasters: Apocalypso, Mango Maina, Dreamsicle Dive, and Serpentine Story. Premium cabanas, food and beverage options, an expanded Wibit Aquatic Adventure water playground, and increased retail offerings are also part of the upgrade. The park will have a total of 15 waterslides, including Apocalypso, the largest waterslide coaster in Georgia. Margaritaville at Lanier Islands is also introducing the Winter Golden Fin Pass sale for its License to Chill Snow Island attraction.

            STORY 2: Lowes Shoplifting Case

Gwinnett County police have identified three suspects in a theft case but are seeking assistance in locating them. The suspects, identified as Kenneth Williams Jr., Rogelio Anastasio Thompson, and Tyquan R Harden, are accused of stealing over $4,000 worth of merchandise from a Lowes store in unincorporated Lilburn in September. The theft involved grabbing a garbage bin and filling it with items, including breakers, before leaving the store without paying. Williams is believed to have acted as the getaway driver. Their current whereabouts are unknown. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, offering a cash reward for tips leading to an arrest and indictment.

STORY 3: How the Democrats are giving the country what it doesn’t want — a Trump-Biden rematch
According to recent reports, Joe Biden's advisers and prominent Democrats have been debating whether he should publicly pledge to serve only one term as president. However, Biden himself has denied having discussed making such a pledge. This debate arose in late 2019, when Biden was struggling in the Democratic primary and needed to differentiate himself from his younger rivals. Despite not making a one-term pledge, Biden went on to win the presidency in 2020. While there is concern within the Democratic Party about Biden's age and the need for new leadership, he remains the favorite in the race. However, his approval numbers have dropped, and there are growing frustrations among his supporters within the party.

STORY 4: Science could finally discover aliens. What does that mean?

The questions of whether we are alone in the universe and what the discovery of alien life would mean have intrigued humanity for centuries. Recent scientific developments, including the study of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) and the burgeoning field of astrobiology, have brought us closer to answering these questions. While UAP observations may provide some insights, the evidence for extraterrestrial life remains limited. On the other hand, astrobiology has identified many exoplanets with the potential for hosting life, and advanced telescopes like the James Webb Space Telescope can search for biosignatures or technosignatures. The discovery of any form of extraterrestrial life would be a groundbreaking moment in human history, challenging our understanding of life's creative potential and offering hope for long-lived, sustainable civilizations. Just as the Copernican revolution reshaped our worldview, the search for alien life promises to change everything we know about ourselves and our place in the universe.

STORY 5: New super cream can heal skin injuries from sunburn and chemical burns

Researchers in the United States have developed a synthetic melanin cream that can protect and heal damaged skin. The cream, referred to as "super melanin," mimics the natural melanin in human skin and can be used to repair sunburn and chemical burns. It scavenges free radicals that can damage skin and offers regenerative properties. The cream has potential applications in skincare, including protection from the sun and skin repair. It could also be used to aid cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy and other medical applications. The synthetic melanin is non-toxic, biocompatible, and has shown promise in studies.

              Break 1: MOG

STORY 1: Mountain View High grad Charbel Aoun Who Founded Nonprofit Named to Georgia Trend’s 40 Under 40 list

The Georgia First Generation Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Gwinnett County, was founded following a business competition pitch at Georgia State University in 2016. Charbel Aoun and Francisco Martinez, both first-generation college students, recognized the barriers faced by students pursuing higher education and established the foundation to support these students and create a sense of belonging and community for them. To date, Georgia FirstGen has established student chapters in seven Gwinnett County high schools, assisting 750 first-generation students with a 95%+ college acceptance rate. Aoun, who is now a third-year pharmacy student, was recently recognized by Georgia Trend magazine's 40 Under 40 class of 2023 for his dedication to equitable access to higher education and mentorship.

STORY 2: Editorial: After a sharp decline during the pandemic, child poverty is soaring again

Child poverty in the United States surged in 2022, with more children living in poverty than before the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic had initially reduced child poverty, thanks to measures like the enhanced Child Tax Credit (CTC) program. In 2021, the child poverty rate dropped to 5.2% due to these programs. However, Congress allowed these measures to expire, leading to a child poverty rate of 12.4% in 2022, affecting approximately 9 million children. Poverty negatively impacts children's nutrition, health, education, and overall well-being. The author argues that reducing child poverty should be a high priority and that the U.S. has the means to achieve this goal.

STORY 3: AMERICAN DREAM: Honoring Jimmy Carter's legacy of humanitarian work a 'full circle' moment

The author shares a personal story of their family's journey to the United States from Cuba in 1980 during the Mariel Lift Boat event. They describe how they were initially scared of Americans but eventually realized they were in America when they arrived in Key West. The author has lived most of their life in Gwinnett County, Georgia, and became actively involved in community service, including joining the Medical Reserve Corps and assisting with COVID-19 responses. They also serve on the board of the Southwest Gwinnett Chamber and the Good Samaritan Health Center of Gwinnett. In 2023, the author and their husband launched the Thumann Foundation to focus on children's healthcare, nutrition, safety, and education. They were selected to the Gwinnett Leadership program Class of 2024 and recently had a full circle moment when honoring President Jimmy Carter's legacy.

STORY 5: Gubernatorial candidates quarrel over glory for winning opioid settlements

Opioid settlement funds, totaling over $50 billion, are becoming a political issue among gubernatorial candidates in several states. Candidates are vying for credit for these funds, even though the settlements resulted from a coalition of attorneys general and private lawyers. North Carolina's Attorney General Josh Stein, running for governor, lists securing opioid settlement funds as an accomplishment. However, mixing politics with these funds raises concerns about their effective allocation and potential misuse. Advocates argue that the focus should be on how the money can be used to save lives and address the public health crisis of opioid addiction, which claimed over 100,000 American lives last year.

STORY 6: Buford Middle Competition Cheerleaders Repeat as State Champions

Buford Middle School's competition cheerleading team secured their second consecutive state championship victory, competing against other Class AAAAAAA feeder middle schools. The Wolves scored 93.5 points, outperforming Lakeside-DeKalb, the runner-up, and North Paulding, who placed third. This win marks their third state championship in five years. The team consists of sixth, seventh, and eighth-grade students and is led by coach Caroline Parker. The achievement reflects the dedication and hard work of these young athletes, contributing to their school's proud cheerleading tradition.

Coming up next. Leah McGrath from Ingles markets on net carbs.

              Break: JACKSON EMC – GCPS
