STORY 1: Gwinnett School Board Members Renew Calls For Equity After Graduation Rate Decline

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) announced its class of 2023 graduation rate of 81.9%, falling short of the district's goal of 83.5% and the class of 2022's rate of 83.2%. Most ethnic and racial groups had graduation rates of at least 84%, with Asian students at 92.6% and Hispanic students at 70%. Students participating in the free and reduced lunch program graduated at a rate of 78.2%, and students with disabilities graduated at 69.4%. The COVID-19 pandemic's impact on the class of 2023 was noted. The district also highlighted the need for resource allocation and equity within the district.

STORY 2: Program erases tattoos to help ex-gang members, sex workers rebuild lives

In Los Angeles, a program is helping former gang members and sex workers remove tattoos in exchange for community service and science education to help them turn their lives around. Removing such tattoos can reduce exposure to violence and trauma and make individuals less vulnerable to being targeted. The program has led to success stories, including one participant who became a Secret Service agent. Tattoos related to gangs and sex work can hinder individuals in finding jobs or joining the military. The study found that 88% of the program's clients desired tattoo removal to transition to a healthier life, with 81% reporting success in achieving their goals after tattoo removal.

STORY 3: Peachtree Corners Man Filed Fraudulent Insurance Claims For Fake Hospital Visits

Kenneth Allen, a Peachtree Corners man, is being sought by state investigators for allegedly defrauding his insurance company by submitting fraudulent claims for hospital visits that never occurred. Between August 2019 and March 2021, Allen filed eight claims with his insurance company for various hospital visits across metro Atlanta, claiming treatment for multiple injuries under his supplemental health insurance policy. The investigation revealed that the hospital visits never happened, and the documents used to support the claims were forged. Allen received approximately $6,100 from these false claims. He is now facing insurance fraud and forgery charges, with investigators currently searching for him.

STORY 4: AI is causing panic for authors. Now the courts are involved

Prominent authors, including Douglas Preston, John Grisham, and George R.R. Martin, are participating in a proposed class action lawsuit against OpenAI, accusing the AI developer of copyright infringement. They claim that OpenAI copied their works to train AI systems like ChatGPT without permission or compensation, which competes with authors for readers and money. OpenAI argues that training an AI system falls under fair use protections. The publishing industry is grappling with AI systems generating text and data using copyrighted materials without consent or compensation. Several authors' groups and individual authors have filed similar lawsuits, and the industry is seeking ways to address the issue, including attribution standards.

STORY 5: Police Searching for Men Who Allegedly Stole Over $4K in Merchandise from a Lowe's in Lilburn

Two men are being sought by Gwinnett County police for allegedly stealing thousands of dollars worth of merchandise from a Lowe's store in Lilburn. The incident occurred on September 26 when the suspects entered the store, grabbed a garbage bin, and filled it with breakers and other items. They walked out of the store without paying for the items, loaded them into a black BMW sedan, and fled the scene. The stolen merchandise is estimated to be worth $4,074. The police are seeking information about the suspects and have requested public assistance. Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward for information leading to their arrest and indictment.

STORY 6: Peachtree Road Baptist Church to Celebrate 170th anniversary

Peachtree Road Baptist Church, located in Suwanee, Georgia, is celebrating its 170th anniversary. The church, originally organized as Sheepfield Baptist Church in 1853, has undergone several name changes throughout its history. The celebration is scheduled for Sunday, October 28, and will feature a talk on the church's history by former pastor Preston Moore, a video presentation, and a message from the current pastor, Jay Reed. The church campus has expanded over the years and now includes various facilities, such as a sanctuary, office space, Sunday School building, gymnasium, fellowship hall, mission houses, parsonages, a cemetery dating back to the Civil War, and more. Additionally, the church is home to Global Baptist Church Planters, which supports church development worldwide.

      STORY 7:

The search for a man who went missing on Lake Lanier while jumping off a jet ski will resumed on Monday. Walter Guardado vanished at East Bank Park on Buford Dam Road after jumping off his jet ski. His girlfriend, who was with him, couldn't locate him after he jumped into the water. Search efforts by Gwinnett County Fire and Emergency Services and the Hall County Fire Department extended into Saturday night and continued Sunday morning.

        Break 1: PEGGY SLAPPY

STORY 1: Young boy found dead in Peachtree Corners apartment

In Peachtree Corners, Georgia, a tragic incident unfolded as officials investigated an apartment fire. A 6-year-old boy, found unresponsive during the investigation, had been stabbed multiple times and was later pronounced dead at a local hospital. Gwinnett County Police Department and Gwinnett County Fire Department were initially called to the scene following a report of an apartment fire. However, first responders discovered the boy inside the apartment with multiple stab wounds. A woman found behind the building was taken into custody, and detectives are investigating her involvement. The victim's name and the motive for the crime are being withheld, and the investigation is ongoing. Police urge anyone with information to contact them or Crime Stoppers.

STORY 2: Buford Corn Maze Offers 'Wholesome' Entertainment During Halloween Season

The Buford Corn Maze in Georgia has been providing fall fun for families for 15 years, offering more than just a corn maze. Visitors can enjoy various attractions including the bubble barn, a farmer's combine slide, an animal viewing area, a hayride, a pumpkin patch, pony rides, and the spooky Haunted Forest. The farm, co-owned by Rodney and Kendra Miller and Jerome and Tina Beggs, is open from Labor Day until the second week of November, with extended hours during October. The Haunted Forest is a unique feature, with its presentation changing every year. Admission prices vary, with combination tickets available. The corn maze averages about 60,000 visitors annually.

        STORY 3: Añejo

A new restaurant called Añejo, offering contemporary Mexican cuisine with a "South Beach feel," is set to open in downtown Lawrenceville. The restaurant is located on the Historic Lawrenceville Square on the second floor of 165 North Perry St. Añejo plans to open in early November and will provide unique contemporary Mexican dishes, along with handcrafted cocktails. The owners also have plans to develop the first floor of the building and open another restaurant next year, with a sushi restaurant being among the considered concepts. This addition aims to diversify the culinary offerings in the area.

        Break 2: M.O.G. – TOM WAGES OBITS – ESOG

STORY 4: LAKO: Are you prepared for the tax implications of your retirement savings?

Many retirees with substantial 401(k) savings may not realize that their balance isn't equal to its value in the distribution phase. Taxes play a significant role in diminishing the effective value of their savings. When retirees need to withdraw $1.30 for every $1 they spend due to taxes, their retirement funds won't last as long as expected. Taxes on Social Security and other sources of income can further erode savings. It's essential to have diversified tax status savings, including after-tax savings in Roth IRAs, brokerage accounts, and tax-deferred savings. Diversification allows flexibility in managing taxes during retirement, ensuring more efficient and long-lasting financial security.

STORY 5: Editorial: Civilian casualties part of the plan for Hamas terror

Early news reports regarding an explosion at a Gaza hospital, where hundreds were killed, are being scrutinized. U.S. intelligence suggests that the explosion resulted from a rocket launched by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad group that went off prematurely. Evidence points towards a ground explosion rather than an airstrike. Israel released an audio recording capturing Hamas operatives discussing the blast. While civilian casualties in war are tragic, Israel takes steps to minimize them, while its enemies often use civilians as shields and promote civilian deaths for propaganda purposes. This strategy of pushing Israel to harm Palestinians has been ongoing for two decades. Israel's right to defend itself is contrasted with Hamas's goal of killing innocents.

Break 3: BOO FEST & HARVEST FEST – INGLES 6

STORY 6: AI identifies potential new treatment for brittle bone disease

Artificial intelligence technology has identified the antimalarial drug dihydroartemisinin (DHA), derived from traditional Chinese medicine, as a potential treatment for osteoporosis. Researchers used a deep learning algorithm to screen for molecules that could treat osteoporosis by focusing on bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs). In mice, DHA effectively reversed osteoporosis-related bone loss and preserved bone structure. It was administered using DHA-loaded nanoparticles. This research offers a promising therapeutic approach for osteoporosis by reprogramming BMMSCs to produce more osteoblasts, the cells responsible for building new bone. Osteoporosis affects millions of elderly people, and DHA presents a new potential treatment.

        STORY 7: PRUNE

As the weather turns cooler and winter approaches, many people are busy preparing their yards. Common tasks include winterizing mechanical yard equipment, changing planters or bringing them indoors, and raking leaves. However, when it comes to pruning woody ornamentals and trees, the timing is critical. Pruning in the fall is not recommended because the cuts made during this season stimulate new growth, which may not have enough time to harden off before winter. This can lead to winter damage and limit flourishing in the spring. Pruning for desired shape or long-term health is better done in the dead of winter when plants are dormant or in early spring after flowering. It's important to understand the specific needs of your plants and consider consulting your local Extension office for guidance.

Gwinnett County commissioners have taken steps to enhance their election processes by approving the purchase of a $401,508 vote-by-mail automation system from Quadient Inc. The funding for this purchase will primarily come from the Capital Project Fund, with $21,508 sourced from Gwinnett's General Tax Contingency project.

Additionally, the commissioners approved a $708,000 contract with Fort Orange Press for ballot printing. This contract will cover the printing of emergency and provisional ballots for use in the 2024 elections and the printing and mailing of absentee-by-mail packets. The program includes in-person classes, online coursework, access to mentors, and community partners. Participants receive training on various aspects of entrepreneurship, including finance, marketing, licensing, and business plan development. NSEI originated as a grant project in 2021, funded by Google in partnership with the American Library Association, and has already graduated 29 entrepreneurs across three cohorts. The program culminates in a pitch event called Launchpad, where entrepreneurs present their business ideas to community business leaders. The library provides laptops and Wi-Fi services to program participants, and top graduates can receive funding from the Gwinnett County Public Library Foundation.

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Thursday, October 19th and I'm Keith Ippolito.

Gwinnett police investigating suspicious death in Stone Mountain

Gwinnett police initiated an investigation into the suspicious death of a woman in unincorporated Stone Mountain on Wednesday. Officers and emergency services responded to an unknown medical call at a residence on Sheree Trail, discovering a woman in her mid-40s already deceased. It remains uncertain how long she had been deceased before the 911 call. The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner’s Office joined the scene and subsequently requested a police investigation due to the suspicious circumstances. The victim's name will be disclosed after notifying next-of-kin. Authorities urge anyone with information to contact GCPD detectives or Crime Stoppers for a potential cash reward leading to an arrest and indictment in this case.

The incident occurred around 8 p.m. in the 1600 block of Pirkle Road in unincorporated Norcross. STORY 2: ESPN angers viewers by cutting off ending of Buford-Mill Creek for NBA preseason

During the recent high school football game between Mill Creek and Buford, which drew national attention, an ESPN broadcasting decision caused frustration among viewers. The game was intense, with Mill Creek leading 31-24 in the final seconds, and Buford on a potential game-tying drive. However, ESPN abruptly switched its broadcast to the start of an NBA preseason game between the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers, leaving viewers unable to witness the game's conclusion. Fans, both locally and nationwide, expressed their frustration on social media, with many criticizing ESPN for the decision. In response to the backlash, ESPN issued an apology and plans to re-air the game on ESPNU.

STORY 3: Gwinnett County Public Schools Saw Graduation Rate Decline This Year

Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) had a graduation rate of 81.9% in 2023, down from 83.2% in 2022, signaling a decline in on-time high school graduation. Five high schools reported their best graduation rates in the past five years, while 12 schools saw their rates increase. Nine schools achieved graduation rates exceeding 90%. Despite these positive results, the districtwide graduation rate remains below the statewide rate of 84.4%. GCPS officials attribute the decline to attendance issues, with rising chronic absenteeism leading to fewer students graduating on time. Superintendent Calvin Watts is actively working on initiatives to improve graduation rates, including communicating with students and families about expectations and providing necessary support.

STORY 5: Suniva to restart solar cell plant in Gwinnett County

Suniva, a U.S. solar cell manufacturer that filed for bankruptcy six years ago due to competition from cheap Asian solar panels, is restarting its manufacturing plant in Norcross, Georgia. The company secured a $110 million commitment from Orion Infrastructure Capital (OIC) to finance plant upgrades and expansion. The first phase will generate up to 240 jobs and increase manufacturing capacity to 1 gigawatt. This will support around 750,000 homes. The expansion will begin production by spring and include a second phase to reach 2.5 gigawatts. The move was made possible by new federal tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act passed by Congress last year, signaling a boost for American solar manufacturing and job creation.
