STORY 1: Gwinnett Police Arrest Mother of Three Suspects in 'Religious Training' Death

Mihee Lee, the mother of three individuals previously charged in connection with the death of South Korean woman Seehe Cho, has now been arrested and faces several charges related to Cho's death. These charges include felony murder, false imprisonment, concealing the death of another, tampering with evidence, and false statements. Cho was allegedly lured to Gwinnett County under the guise of joining a religious group called "Soldiers of Christ" but ended up being malnourished, beaten, and ultimately died. Her body was found burned in the trunk of a car outside a spa in September. Several other individuals, including Eric Hyun and others, have also been charged in connection with her death. Law enforcement has labeled "Soldiers of Christ" as a gang.............…..read more at gwinnett daily post dot com

STORY 2: Gwinnett schools make GaDOE’s Title I Distinguished and Reward lists

The Georgia Department of Education has recognized several Gwinnett County public schools for outstanding student performance on statewide assessments. Harris Elementary School, Partee Elementary School, Paul Duke STEM High School, and Pharr Elementary School have been named 2023 Title I Distinguished Schools, signifying that they are in the top 5% for both Schoolwide Program and Targeted Assistance Program schools in the state and have the highest absolute performance for all students based on statewide assessments. These four schools are among a group of 78 that received this designation. Additionally, Central Gwinnett High School, Duluth High School, Paul Duke STEM High, and Rosebud Elementary School are 2023 Title I Reward Schools, ranking in the top 5% of Title I schools in the state for improving the performance of all students. All seven schools will receive certificates and recognition and are eligible to apply for the National NSEA Distinguished School Award, with the possibility of receiving $20,000 in state Title I funds for their achievements.

STORY 3: State Officials Seek Input from Gwinnett Drivers Before Making Changes to Hwy. 316

The Georgia Department of Transportation is seeking input from Gwinnett drivers who use State Route 316 to access Athens or other destinations. They are planning to convert the intersections at Kilcrease and Carl-Bethlehem Roads in Barrow County into grade-separated interchanges. The changes will affect drivers traveling to or from Athens, including those visiting the University of Georgia. GDOT is soliciting feedback on various aspects of the project, such as the construction timeline, traffic mitigation, and costs. The proposed changes would allow for access to Kilcrease Road via an interchange with roundabouts but would eliminate direct access to Carl-Bethlehem Road from the highway. GDOT is promoting these changes as a way to enhance safety and accommodate population growth in the area. A virtual presentation and Q&A session are scheduled for October 19 to provide further details and address questions. Drivers and residents can review plans and submit feedback on GDOT's project website.

STORY 4: Lawrenceville woman goes missing after leaving home to see friends last month

Detryauna Hemphill, a 26-year-old woman from unincorporated Lawrenceville, went missing on September 25. She informed her family that she was going to see friends but hasn't been seen or heard from since. Gwinnett County police are seeking public assistance in locating her and determining the circumstances of her disappearance. It remains unclear whether she went to meet her friends on foot or by car, and her family doesn't know who these friends are. Hemphill has a history of drug use and a medical condition, though the specifics are redacted. She is described as a 5'10" tall, 300-pound Black woman, last seen wearing a blue and white top and blue jeans. Authorities urge anyone with information to call 9-1-1.

STORY 5: Gwinnett Technical College hits record enrollment at nearly 10,000 students

Gwinnett Technical College has achieved its highest-ever enrollment numbers, with over 9,800 students in the 2023 Fall semester, marking a 16% increase from the previous year. Several factors have contributed to this growth, including the opening of new facilities for Computer Information Systems, Cybersecurity, and Emerging Technologies, attracting students seeking hands-on skills in a global job market. Additionally, more students are transferring from traditional four-year colleges to access cost-effective, high-quality programs. The college's support services for veterans and their families have also gained recognition. Gwinnett Tech now offers over 140 associate degrees, diplomas, and certificates, with new programs to meet evolving job market demands. A record-breaking spring semester is anticipated, featuring programs related to the Electric Vehicle industry and registered nursing.

The Atlanta Falcons players volunteered to help build a new playground in Suwanee. Alongside 30 volunteers, including cheerleaders, and some players, they engaged in construction work, pushing wheelbarrows, shoveling dirt, and using power tools. This community service was part of the Falcons' tradition of giving back to Atlanta communities, which includes activities like visits to schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, and military bases. The new playground, PlayTown Suwanee, is designed to be inclusive, with features for children of all abilities, including those with disabilities. The project is expected to open later in the fall and includes various age-appropriate equipment and unique features, such as foam flooring and dinosaur fossils. STORY 1: Man Dies After Jumping Off Lawrenceville-Suwanee Road Bridge

A Duluth man, Antonio Cartagena, aged 25, has been charged with sexual battery and public indecency for allegedly inappropriately touching and partially disrobing while in a Lyft vehicle with a 55-year-old female driver. The incident took place at the intersection of Pleasant Hill Road and North Berkeley Lake Road. Startled by his lewd behavior, the driver reported the incident, and Cartagena fled the scene. Law enforcement swiftly located and arrested him. Cartagena was released on bond the following day. Duluth police are urging potential additional victims to come forward as they investigate the case, encouraging anyone with similar encounters to contact Detective Javier Bahamundi at 678-512-3708..............…..read more at gwinnett daily post dot com

STORY 2: Federal lawsuit alleges former Gwinnett Police officer used excessive force during 2021 arrest

In 2021, Angelo Black spent five days in the hospital with a head injury and brain damage. A new lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court of Northern Georgia alleges that a former Gwinnett Police officer is responsible for these injuries. According to attorney Reginald Greene, the officer used excessive force, violating Black's Fourth Amendment rights when they tased him while he was attempting to jump from one level of a parking deck to another after a traffic stop in October 2021. This resulted in severe head injuries. Black was subsequently incarcerated on drug and firearm-related charges. The lawsuit seeks accountability and highlights the need for better training and supervision of law enforcement officers to prevent similar incidents. Gwinnett County acknowledges the lawsuit and pledges to respond appropriately.

STORY 3: Gwinnett man banned from Walmart after being told he ‘fit the description’ of a shoplifter

Leroy Jackson, a Gwinnett County man, claims he has been banned from a Walmart store for a year after being wrongly accused of shoplifting. Suwanee police stopped Jackson as he left the store, as he supposedly "fit the description" of shoplifting suspects. However, Jackson believes this was profiling, as he was approached by a stranger in the store and had no connection to the actual shoplifter. Walmart requested Jackson be criminally trespassed due to his association with the other individual. Jackson is dismayed by the ban and feels it was unjust. He won't return to the store, and he advises caution when interacting with strangers in such situations. Walmart has reported numerous shoplifting incidents to Suwanee police but offered no additional comment on the situation.

STORY 4: Georgia’s controversial 2021 voting law overhaul survives preliminary legal challenge

A federal court judge in Georgia has rejected a request to temporarily block the state's controversial election rules, which have been criticized for potentially disenfranchising Black voters in the 2024 election. U.S. District Court Judge J.P. Boulee ruled that the U.S. Department of Justice and voting rights groups failed to provide sufficient evidence that Republican lawmakers intentionally discriminated against Black voters when implementing new ID requirements for mail-in voting, restrictions on absentee drop boxes, shorter deadlines for absentee ballot requests, and increased penalties for providing refreshments to voters waiting in line. As a result, the rules created in Georgia's 2021 election legislation will remain in effect for the 2024 election cycle. Plaintiffs, including voting rights and civil rights organizations, argue that these rules make it harder for marginalized groups to vote and violate the Voting Rights Act.

STORY 5: Dacula's Maple Creek Park Playground Nearing Completion

The redesigned Maple Creek Park playground in Dacula is set to open by Thanksgiving, featuring new equipment and exciting additions. The $821,000 project, funded by an endowment from former Mayor Jimmy Wilbanks, began construction in July 2023. It aims to improve accessibility, update equipment, and cater to a wider age range. The new features include a separate toddler play area, adult fitness equipment, ADA accessibility, and specialized playground turf. Maple Creek Park, located at 425 McMillan Road, also offers a 9-hole disc golf course, a half-mile walking trail, and a pavilion. The city operates Olde Mill Park in downtown Dacula, while two Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation parks, Dacula Park and Rabbit Hill Park, are also nearby. Construction progress can be tracked on the city's Facebook page.

STORY 6: Lawrenceville man jumps off bridge

A tragic incident occurred in Suwanee as a 24-year-old Demorest man jumped off the Lawrenceville-Suwanee bridge onto Interstate 85 south and was struck by a tractor-trailer. The Suwanee Police responded to the scene after receiving a report about a vehicle hitting a pedestrian at 8:43 a.m. Sadly, the man passed away at the scene, and his next-of-kin was notified. The accident led to the temporary closure of all southbound lanes on I-85, but by 10:30 a.m., the Georgia Department of Transportation had reopened all lanes.

STORY 7: Two Greater Atlanta Christian Students Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Greater Atlanta Christian School seniors Kevin Liu and Akhil Sarikonda have been named National Merit Semifinalists in the 2024 National Merit Scholarship Competition. This honor places them among 16,000 Semifinalists in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. To qualify, they needed excellent academic records, a recommendation from a high school official, an essay, and strong SAT or ACT scores. These Semifinalists were selected from 1.3 million high school students who took the 2022 PSAT/NMSQT. They're now competing for 7,140 National Merit Scholarships, valued at nearly $28 million, with winners to be announced in spring 2024. To reach the Finalist level, they must submit additional information about their academic and extracurricular achievements. The school is proud of their accomplishments and looks forward to their promising futures.

Gwinnett County Public Schools will provide a one-time $1,000 retention payment to active, benefits-eligible employees as a Christmas bonus. The decision was part of the fiscal year 2024 budget and will be disbursed in December 2023. Superintendent Dr. Calvin J. Watts expressed appreciation for the dedication of employees and stated that this bonus reflects the district's commitment to supporting staff in achieving educational goals. Although it's a retention payment, it will be subject to various deductions, including benefits-related, federal, state, and local deductions. This bonus is in addition to cost-of-living raises and teacher raises approved earlier in the year.

University System of Georgia Chancellor Sonny Perdue has declined to intervene in the dispute between Georgia Gwinnett College President Jann Joseph and the college's Faculty Senate, which is on track for a no-confidence vote in November. Instead, Perdue is urging both parties to resolve the matter through conversation. The Faculty Senate had asked the university system to mediate the dispute, but Perdue and USG Chief Academic Officer Ashwani Monga rejected that request, stating that discussions should be directly between the Faculty Senate and GGC leadership. A no-confidence vote would signal dissatisfaction with the administration but doesn't have the power to remove Joseph from her position..........…..read more at gwinnettdailypost.com

                STORY 2: GCPS School Absenteeism

Gwinnett County Public Schools has reported a doubling of chronic absenteeism across the district since the COVID-19 pandemic began. Chronic absenteeism is defined as a student missing 10% of enrolled school days during the year, regardless of whether the absences are excused or not. GCPS officials see it as a significant challenge to student performance and noted that students who are chronically absent perform significantly below their peers who regularly attend school. While chronic absenteeism is highest in high schools, Gwinnett's elementary schools also see high levels, particularly among kindergartners. Demographically, Hispanic students have the highest percentage of chronic absences, followed by American Indian, multiracial, Black, White, and Asian students. GCPS is implementing a multi-tiered approach to address chronic absenteeism, including preventative measures and awareness campaigns.

The break-ins occurred on September 28, with the suspect entering North Georgia Urgent Care and a nearby business, stealing approximately $7,200. The suspect, described as a black male wearing a gray hoodie and black sweatpants, remains at large. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact detectives at 770-513-5300 or report tips anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477.
