In the latest rankings, GGC secured the top spot for diversity in the Southern region and ranked fourth nationally for ethnic diversity among regional colleges. The rankings are based on data from the fall 2022 semester, with GGC's student body comprising 32% Black/African American, 27% Hispanic, 24% white, 12% Asian, and 4% multi-ethnic students. GGC also earned high marks in other categories, including undergraduate teaching, public schools, least debt, and international student representation.…..read more at gwinnettdailypost.com

STORY 3: Snellville will hold liquor store license lottery on Sept. 25

Snellville officials are using a lottery to decide which business owner will be granted a liquor store license to operate a package store in the city. Five groups have submitted proposals, and the lottery, scheduled for September 25th at City Hall, will determine the recipient. This decision follows voter approval last November for the issuance of liquor store licenses. Initially, three proposals were approved for the lottery, but two more groups successfully appealed their denial, making a total of five eligible proposals. The lottery includes proposed sites near Main Street, McDonald's, Autobell Car Wash, Hampton Inn & Suites, and QuikTrip on U.S. Highway 78.

The exhibit, now in its 32nd year, features cows, a donkey, goats, sheep, newly hatched chicks, and ducklings. Visitors pay $1 per person to see the animals, and the funds raised serve as a significant fundraiser for the Gwinnett County 4-H group, covering expenses for various activities throughout the year. It also offers suburban children the chance to experience farm animals up close and learn about their care.

Cat in Snellville area tests positive for rabies after biting owner

Gwinnett County officials are urging residents in south Gwinnett County to exercise caution outdoors after a cat in the Snellville area tested positive for rabies. The cat was tested after biting its owner on September 7th. Officials advise residents to avoid animals exhibiting unusual behavior and emphasize the potential rabies threat from animals like foxes and raccoons, which can transmit the virus through bites or scratches. Pet owners are encouraged to ensure their pets are up-to-date on rabies vaccinations. The incident is one of several rabies cases reported in Gwinnett County this year. If bitten or scratched by an animal, residents should seek immediate treatment and report the incident to authorities.

A 19-year-old named Michael Maddox died after a shooting in unincorporated Lawrenceville, Gwinnett County. He was brought to Northside Hospital Gwinnett by three unidentified individuals with gunshot wounds. The shooting occurred on Kentshire Place. These individuals are considered witnesses, not suspects. The motive behind the shooting is still being investigated. Gwinnett County police are urging anyone with information to come forward, offering anonymity through Crime Stoppers and a cash reward for details leading to an arrest and indictment. STORY 2: State officials will install median on Duluth Highway near Northside Gwinnett

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) has awarded a $5.9 million construction contract to Summit Construction and Development LLC to install a median on a portion of Duluth Highway near Northside Hospital Gwinnett in Lawrenceville. This project will affect 0.5 miles of the highway, replacing the existing two-way left turn lane with a raised median. Left turns will only be possible at specific intersections, aiming to reduce crash frequency and severity. While it's unclear when construction will start or when the project will be completed, this change will impact drivers' ability to make left turns in the affected area, necessitating U-turns or alternative routes for access to businesses. Sidewalks and curb/gutter improvements are also planned.

STORY 3: Gwinnett police looking for suspect in theft at Peachtree Corners Targe

Gwinnett County police are searching for a woman accused of stealing three Epson computer printers and children's clothing from a Target store in Peachtree Corners on August 31. The suspect allegedly placed the stolen items in a cart and left the store without paying. She is described as a slim-built Black woman wearing a white hooded jacket, white pants, and white shoes. Police have released a surveillance image and are seeking assistance in identifying her. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers for a possible cash reward.
