Story 6: Georgia Gwinnett College economist discusses thoughts for upcoming Federal Reserve meeting

The Federal Reserve Board faces a challenging decision at its upcoming meeting regarding interest rates and inflation. Dr. Philip Vinson, an economist at Georgia Gwinnett College, believes that raising interest rates is effective in addressing inflation, even if it doesn't immediately lower prices. Instead, it aims to reduce the rate of price increases. While inflation has dropped from its peak of 9% to around 3.2%, it remains above the Fed's 2% target. Further rate hikes could risk pushing the economy into a recession, impacting business growth, employment, housing, and the stock market. The Fed's choice between hitting the inflation target and avoiding a recession will be a critical one.

Police have released a surveillance image and are seeking assistance in identifying her. Anyone with information is urged to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers for a possible cash reward

COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths in Georgia have been rising, with approximately 17,000 hospitalizations in the past week, marking a 16% increase over the previous week. COVID-19-related deaths have also risen by 11% to around 700. However, these numbers remain significantly lower than the peaks seen during the pandemic. The dominant strain in Georgia is currently the EG.5 variant, followed by other strains stemming from the omicron variant. Notably, the BA.2.86 variant, which has garnered attention, has not yet appeared in the state.

A new COVID vaccine approved by the FDA is expected to be available soon and is designed to protect against the current virus strains. Despite progress, vigilance is urged, especially among immunocompromised individuals, as COVID is expected to persist for years. Additionally, RSV season is expected to return to a more typical pattern, with new tools available to combat it. Early onset of the flu season is also noted, with recommendations for flu vaccination for individuals over six months old. Utilizing available preventive measures is crucial in managing these respiratory viruses.
