From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Thursday August 31st, and I'm Brian Giffin
Last year, a murder investigation by the Gwinnett County Police Department led to uncovering a larger issue of human trafficking in metro Atlanta, as revealed by Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Cleo Atwater. Collaborating investigators from the police department and the Sheriff’s Office worked on both murder and suspected human trafficking angles. This investigation unveiled an organization using crimes like murder, kidnapping, assaults, and human trafficking to advance their operations. Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office aims to combat this problem by hosting a training conference for local law enforcement and prosecutors in the coming year. This initiative was discussed during the Sheriff’s Office's business plan presentation. The conference will offer highly skilled training led by law enforcement officials, survivor leaders, and victim services providers, targeting human trafficking and child exploitation cases in Gwinnett County and neighboring areas. The Sheriff's Office is committed to addressing citizen needs through forward-looking strategies.

STORY 2: 11th
The Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology (GSMST) has maintained its reputation as the top high school in Georgia, securing the No. 1 spot for the 11th consecutive year in the U.S. News and World Report's 2023 Best High School rankings. With a score of 99.95 out of 100, GSMST also ranked 19th nationally and 10th among STEM schools in the United States. The evaluation process considers factors like college readiness, reading and math proficiency, graduation rates, and more. The ranking aims to help parents ensure their children are in an environment conducive to their success. Columbus High, Davidson Magnet School, and DeKalb School of the Arts followed as other top-ranking schools in Georgia.
Story 3: grid
The aging U.S. electric grid requires significant new transmission capacity, but building new lines can take a decade or more due to various challenges. Grid-enhancing technologies (GETs), such as sensors, power-flow devices, and software, aim to optimize the existing grid and potentially reduce the need for new infrastructure. While GETs have been embraced globally, their adoption has been slower in the U.S. due to financial incentives for utilities to build capital-intensive projects and the need for further validation, industry standards, and security considerations. Some states and FERC have begun promoting GETs to enhance grid efficiency and reduce congestion costs.

Patrick Humes, a 37-year-old man from Athens, was arrested on 28 charges of criminal damage to property after allegedly driving erratically through yards, hitting parked cars, and causing destruction in the Berkley Hills Estates neighborhood in unincorporated Duluth. The incident involved a Mercedes G500 and resulted in damage to a total of 30 vehicles and other property. Videos shared online by residents showed the chaotic scene. While investigators have yet to determine the motive, it's suspected that Humes may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time. Despite claims of possible gunfire, no evidence of gunshots or firearms was found during the investigation.

STORY 2: cap
Errol Anderson, who has been living with Type 1 diabetes for 26 years, shared his experiences of how insulin prices have constrained his life choices. He highlighted the impact of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) on his ability to access healthcare, but noted that insulin costs still influenced his decisions. U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath and State Sen. Sheikh Rahman joined diabetes awareness advocates at an event to emphasize the importance of capping insulin costs through the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. The act limits insulin costs for Medicare recipients to $35 per month, aiming to make it more affordable for seniors. The event marked the one-year anniversary of the act and focused on reducing healthcare costs and increasing access to care.
Story 3: panic
During a football game between Discovery and Central Gwinnett high schools, a rumor spread that guns had been fired, causing panic and prompting people to flee the stands. However, school officials and law enforcement determined that the rumor was false and no shots had been fired. The incident occurred during halftime of the game, leading to the evacuation of Discovery's stadium. No injuries were reported during the rush, but several fights broke out after the crowds left. Both local and school police responded to the incident and found no evidence of gunfire. The incident is under investigation, and the individuals responsible for causing panic will face appropriate consequences.

Story 5: fix
The supply of affordable housing in Georgia has drastically decreased due to the pandemic, leading to higher rents and increased homelessness among single adults and families. The end of the eviction moratorium and federal rental aid further strained tenants. Families are forced into difficult decisions, living in subpar conditions or paying unaffordable rents. Advocacy groups are seeking solutions, including lifting the rent control ban and creating affordable housing initiatives. Local officials are also taking steps to address the housing shortage.
