             Story 1. jury

Austin Ford, a Lithonia man accused of killing teenager Tori Lang, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for charges related to her death. Despite two juries being unable to reach a verdict on the murder charge, Ford was sentenced for theft by taking and concealing the death of another charges. The lack of direct evidence and the defense's argument that Lang may have committed suicide made the case challenging to prove. Tori Lang's body was found in Yellow River Park in 2021 with a gunshot wound, and her identity was initially unknown until her tattoos helped identify her. Ford was charged with her death later in 2022.………….. read more at gwinnettdailypost.com

      STORY 2: van

Gwinnett County police are seeking a Hispanic male accused of breaking into a work van and stealing tools from Posada's Trucks, a used car dealership in Norcross. The theft occurred at 5000 Singleton Road on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The suspect allegedly entered the parked van, took off his backpack, and rummaged through it. The dealership's owners noticed missing tools from the van, although the surveillance video did not capture all of the suspect's actions. The suspect is described as having a slim build, wearing a grey T-shirt, blue jeans, and carrying a camo print backpack. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers.

      Story 3: alarm

A significant police presence was observed at Collins Hill High School due to a reported possible trespasser. An employee reported the presence of a trespasser inside the school, prompting a swift response from Gwinnett police. However, it was later confirmed to be a false alarm. The individual mistaken for a trespasser turned out to be an authorized construction worker. The situation was swiftly resolved, and the police assured that the students were not in danger.

      Story 7: archer

And now, Leah McGrath, corporate dietician at Ingles markets talks with us about foods that help with swollen feet

Archer's sophomore quarterback Jordan Do shined in the team's televised season opener against North Forsyth, leading his team to a 35-16 victory in the Corky Kell + Dave Hunter Classic. Do fell just short of 300 total yards, with 277 passing yards and 32 rushing yards. He connected with fellow sophomore Jonathan Stafford Jr. for two touchdowns, while also throwing a 7-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Michel. Despite two interceptions by C.J. Lenyszyn, Do's performance was remarkable, completing 28 of 46 passes and effectively contributing to his team's win.

      Story 8: Bolden

K.J. Bolden, a senior football player at Buford High School, is recognized as a consensus five-star recruit and one of the nation's top players. Standing at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, Bolden is ranked as the No. 7 player nationally, No. 1 safety nationally, and No. 2 prospect in Georgia according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Despite his already impressive skill set, Bolden's continuous improvement is highlighted by his coach Bryant Appling, who praises his work ethic and dedication to refining his weaknesses. Bolden's enhanced physicality has positioned him as a projected college-level safety, although he plays defensive back and wide receiver for Buford. His transition to Buford from Atlanta has proven successful, offering better opportunities and a strong football program.

      Story 9:  loss

In the opening game of the 2023 season, Collins Hill football faced a 27-13 loss against Milton due to six turnovers. Despite showing promise in the box score with 17 first downs compared to Milton's 10, the turnovers proved detrimental. Coach Drew Swick, leading his alma mater, expressed disappointment in the self-inflicted wounds. Collins Hill struggled to gain ground offensively, with quarterback T.J. Wilcox displaying potential in passing and punting. Wide receiver Quentin Grambo stood out with five receptions for 81 yards. Milton's quarterback Luke Nickel had 184 passing yards and two touchdowns, while their defense successfully contained Collins Hill. Despite the loss, Coach Swick is determined to improve and build a winning team moving forward.

        STORY 2: awards

Gwinnett County has secured a remarkable 22 National Association of Counties (NACo) Achievement Awards for diverse programs implemented in 2022. This achievement surpasses its previous record of 11 awards from the prior year. Recognized programs include the Mobile Food Distribution initiative, Black History Month exhibit, online donation app, and watershed cleanup aimed at combating water pollution. The county's mobile food program, initially established to address pandemic-related food security challenges, earned the Best in Category Achievement Award. Notably, the Volunteer Gwinnett project distributed over 1.5 million pounds of food to almost 50,000 households in under three years. These accomplishments highlight Gwinnett County's commitment to comprehensive community support.

        Story 3: homes

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, rising real estate values and rents have strained budgets for homebuyers and renters. The U.S. saw a substantial increase in median home sales price, boosted by low interest rates and a strong pandemic economy. While rent prices remained restrained due to renter protections and assistance programs, they accelerated in 2021 and 2022. Despite a 13.2% decline in median home sale price in Q2 2023 from the peak of Q4 2022, housing supply remains critically low, contributing to high competition and prices. The scarcity stems from underinvestment in housing since the Great Recession, which was worsened by high inflation and construction costs. Builder confidence declined for 12 consecutive months in 2022, influenced by these factors. Nationally, Georgia is 10th for building the most new homes.

        Story 4: taylor

Bill Griese, known as Sweet Baby James, is a performer who travels the country giving solo concerts of James Taylor's iconic songs. Griese, a Nashville resident, has been doing this for about seven years. Despite being a dedicated Taylor fan, Griese's presentation is not a typical tribute band show, and he doesn't attempt to imitate Taylor's appearance or mannerisms. He performs Taylor's songs in his own style, without a visual component, focusing on sharing the music rather than the history of Taylor. Griese's concerts are interactive and include hits like "You've Got a Friend," "Sweet Baby James," and "Fire and Rain." He performs around 45 shows a year and values audience engagement.

Sweet Baby James will perform at the Aurora Theatre located at the Lawrenceville Arts Center at 7:30 p.m. Tonight.

        Story 5: king

The musical covers her collaboration with songwriting partners like Gerry Goffin, Cynthia Weil, and Barry Mann, and features many of the hit songs she wrote, including "You've Got a Friend," "One Fine Day," and "The Loco-Motion." The musical, which opened on Broadway in 2014 and received Tony and Grammy Awards, is now being presented by the Aurora Theatre in Georgia. The lead role of Carole King is played by Bethany Irby, who also plays the piano during the performance. The show is described as a "jukebox musical" and is expected to resonate with audiences through its nostalgic songs and Carole King's inspiring journey.

        Story 6: gbi

Retired Deputy Director of Georgia Bureau of Investigation's (GBI) Investigative Division, Scott Dutton, has been appointed as GBI assistant director by Director Chris Hosey. Story 1. looking

Gwinnett County police are searching for a man who allegedly stole a work van and crashed it through a gate at the Gwinnett Department’s West Precinct on July 16. After plowing through the gates, the suspect drove south, causing further damage, and ultimately drove onto Interstate 85, striking multiple vehicles. The van was later found in DeKalb County, abandoned by a Hispanic male who fled on foot. The van belonged to Vortex Heating and Cooling, and the owner stated that it wasn't supposed to be driven due to maintenance needs. Police are urging anyone with information about the suspect's identity to come forward. STORY 2: missing

Gwinnett County police are seeking public assistance in finding Selena Garcia, a 25-year-old Hispanic woman from Lilburn who went missing in October. Despite a previous call for tips in March, no progress has been made, leading authorities to renew their plea for information. Selena Garcia's disappearance has sparked concerns within the Hispanic community regarding the police department's handling of crimes against their community. Her case is among a series of incidents, including the murder of Susana Morales and the death of Rodrigo Floriano Mayen, which have drawn attention to the perceived lack of police responsiveness to the concerns of the Hispanic community. Police are urging anyone with information about Selena Garcia's whereabouts to come forward.

        Story 3: office

Former Lilburn Mayor Johnny Crist has announced his candidacy for the upcoming mayoral election in November. Crist, who served as mayor from 2012 to 2020, aims to reclaim his former position. He emphasized his dedication to the community and his desire to work on issues such as public safety, controlling loud mufflers, and enhancing local amenities. The mayoral election is one of several upcoming local elections in Lilburn, with City Council Posts 1 and 2 also up for contention. Qualifying for these positions will take place from August 21 to August 23 at Lilburn City Hall.

Tax Commissioner Denise Mitchell announced that the bills would be mailed out, and property owners can also access their bills online and make payments through various methods. The deadline for payment is October 15. Mitchell encourages online payment via e-check for its convenience and security. Those who recently sold or bought property this year will each receive a bill. There's a $3.95 fee for debit card payments and a 2.25% fee for credit card or PayPal payments. The ACCE board includes representatives from influential chambers of commerce globally. Masino expressed his honor to serve the chamber industry and praised ACCE's innovative leadership. Other Georgia figures, including Katie Kirkpatrick and representatives from Douglas Chamber and Sumter County Chamber, also joined the ACCE board.

        Story 6: study

Georgia Gwinnett College (GGC) contributed over $521 million to Gwinnett County and the Atlanta metropolitan area's economy in fiscal year 2022, as per a study by the University System of Georgia. Story 7: premiums

Georgia state employees, public school teachers, and retirees will experience an average 5% increase in health insurance premiums starting January 1st of next year. This decision, approved by the Georgia Board of Community Health, marks only the second premium increase in the past six years. For those covered through individual plans, the average monthly increase will be $7.25, while families will see an average increase of $23.61 per month. The increase comes in response to rising healthcare costs following the COVID-19 pandemic, as individuals resume deferred medical appointments and screenings. The State Health Benefit Plan will also begin offering full coverage for diagnostic mammograms, colonoscopies, and retinal eye exams for diabetes to enhance preventative care and manage costs. Open enrollment for 2024 coverage is set to begin on October 16 and run through November 3.

        Story 8: soccer

After a 27-year coaching career in Gwinnett County, Danny Klinect, head boys soccer coach at Parkview High School, has announced that the 2024 spring season will be his last as a high school coach. Although he will continue teaching, Klinect has decided to step down due to the toll of soccer injuries from his playing days. Throughout his coaching journey, Klinect has achieved considerable success, including winning state titles at three different Gwinnett high schools. With a career high school coaching record of 290-125-18, Klinect aspires to reach the 300-win mark in his final season. He plans to dedicate time to his family and daughter's soccer pursuits as he bids farewell to high school coaching.

        Story 9: home runs

In the Rumble At The Ridge softball tournament hosted by Peachtree Ridge, Buford started their season with a strong performance, winning 14-0 against South Forsyth. Madison Pickens had a standout game, going 2-for-3 with a grand slam, a double, four RBIs, two runs, and a stolen base. Mackenzie Pickens also contributed with a home run, two RBIs, and two runs, while Kadyn Gabrels hit her first varsity home run. Caroline Stanton pitched four scoreless innings with nine strikeouts for the win. Collins Hill defeated Lanier with a score of 14-6, and Dacula secured their first win of the season by defeating Jackson County 9-4.

We’ll have final thoughts after this.
