          Story 1. 2 siblings

Gwinnett County police are investigating a shooting in unincorporated Lawrenceville that occurred on the 1300 block of Baldridge Drive. Two men were found dead in a front yard, while two others were alive but suffering from gunshot wounds. Preliminary findings suggest a verbal altercation in the front yard led to the exchange of gunfire. Detectives are searching for witnesses and investigating the motive behind the shooting. The names of the victims have not been disclosed, and the condition of the injured individuals is unknown. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact the police or Crime Stoppers anonymously for a potential cash reward.

          STORY 2: identify

Authorities in Gwinnett County are working to identify the body of a Hispanic man discovered at a construction site near Live Oak Parkway and Thompson Parkway in unincorporated Norcross on August 7. The man is believed to be between 20 and 50 years old, measuring between 5 feet 2 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall, and weighing between 130 and 150 pounds. He was found wearing size 30-by-34 blue jeans, a grey GAP tank top, blue-red-white plaid pajama pants, white socks with a lime green stripe, a black belt, a tan or light brown Nike hoodie, and a white metal beaded necklace. The man also had tattoos on his forearms: one with "John 3:16," a rosary, and a cross on his left forearm, and the other with two nautical stars, the word "Maria," and a pair of wings on his right forearm. Authorities have not yet determined the cause or manner of death, and anyone with information about the man's identity is urged to contact the Medical Examiner's Office at 678-442-3160.

          Story 3: clear

A Hispanic woman previously considered a suspect in an identity theft case at a Truist bank near Gwinnett Place Mall has been cleared of any wrongdoing, according to Gwinnett County police. The woman, who had been identified through surveillance footage, is no longer a suspect. Authorities are still actively investigating the case, in which someone used another person's identity to steal over $19,000 from the Truist bank on Pleasant Hill Road on June 14. This theft involved a $13,607 withdrawal from the victim's account and the cashing of a $6,111 check. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the police.

          Story 4: kemp

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp has criticized State Senator Colton Moore's demand for a special state legislative session to impeach Fulton County prosecutor Fani Willis, who is leading an election collusion case against Donald Trump and others. Kemp and State House Speaker Jon Burns have rejected Moore's call for a special session. Kemp compared Moore's efforts to calls in 2020 to overturn Trump's election loss, which he also rejected. Moore has faced criticism for his language, which colleagues have deemed as inciting violence. Speaker Burns called for a lowering of the political temperature, stating that attempts to punish Willis violate the separation of powers. Other Republican senators have proposed using the state's new prosecutor oversight commission to investigate Willis. Kemp expressed doubt about the feasibility and constitutionality of a special session to bypass the law.

          Story 5: pathways

As of August 17, only 265 people have enrolled in Georgia's new Pathways to Coverage program, which launched on July 1. This program provides Medicaid to Georgians aged 19 to 64 with a household income up to the federal poverty level and who meet the qualifying activities threshold but are not eligible for regular Medicaid. Governor Brian Kemp had estimated that around 345,000 Georgians could qualify for the program, but officials now expect an estimated adoption rate of around 90,000 to 100,000 by 2025. The program launched alongside the state's re-verification of Medicaid eligibility, which removed over 97,000 people from Medicaid roles, raising concerns about healthcare stability for affected families.

          Story 6: grid

The U.S. faces the challenge of needing significant new transmission capacity for its aging electric grid, and while Congress has taken steps on permitting reform, grid-enhancing technologies (GETs) could make better use of the existing system and reduce the need for new transmission lines. GETs include sensors, power-flow devices, software, and hardware that maximize the grid's efficiency. These technologies can help alleviate congestion, a major issue on the electric grid, by rerouting power through optimal paths and minimizing the use of expensive power generation methods. While GETs offer significant benefits, utility incentives and regulations often favor capital-intensive transmission projects over GETs, leading to slower adoption in the U.S.

          Story 7: gang

Jeffery Rice, a confirmed member of the Red Tape Gang, has been convicted and sentenced to 30 years in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred in Athens-Clarke County on October 21, 2022. The sentence includes 18 years to be served in prison and the remainder on strict probation. The Red Tape Gang has ties to major national Bloods gangs. The conviction is part of ongoing efforts to dismantle gang networks that incite violence in communities. The case was investigated by the Athens-Clarke County Police Department's Homicide and Gang Units, with assistance from the Attorney General's Gang Prosecution Unit, resulting in the indictment of 15 defendants, including seven alleged Red Tape Gang members, over the past year for various incidents, including fatal shootings, assault, and robbery.

          Story 8: lanier

Margaritaville at Lanier Islands is set to introduce Georgia's first waterslide coaster, Apocalypso, in 2024. Apocalypso is part of a new tower of four water slides, representing the park's most significant expansion in decades. Apocalypso is described as the "ultimate fusion waterslide" with thrilling plunges, uphill blasts, and the largest blasterango drop in the country. The expansion will bring the total number of slides in the water park to 15. Additionally, the park will feature three other world-class slides starting from the Apocalypso tower. These attractions promise an exciting and fun-filled experience for visitors of all ages.

        6. Georgia lawmakers on mental health legislation

From the Henssler Financial Studio this is your news minute on the Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast Presented by Engineered Solutions of Georgia. Today is Monday September 4th and I'm Brian Giffin

Georgia legislators, State Reps. Terry Cummings and Sharon Cooper, discussed House Bill 520, a comprehensive proposal to transform Georgia's behavioral healthcare system. The bill aims to enhance mental health research, funding, facilities, and personnel, emphasizing treatment over incarceration. The proposed legislation would offer incentives for students to enter the behavioral healthcare field and assist those already in the field with loan repayment. Panel members, including Kim Jones from NAMI, highlighted the need for systemic changes to address workforce challenges, equal access, coordination among agencies, and alternatives to incarceration for those with mental health issues. They emphasized that improving mental health treatment is a bipartisan public safety and health issue.

The Gwinnett County police are investigating the murders of a teenage boy, Juan Angel Montes, 16, and his older sister, Maria Rosaria Montes Dorantes, 23, who were found dead on the side of Interstate 85 in Buford. Their bodies were discovered by a passerby who had pulled off onto the shoulder of I-85 due to car trouble. The siblings had gunshot wounds and were pronounced dead at the scene. STORY 2: stabbing

A Decatur woman, Keareah Mercedes Harris, 24, is facing aggravated assault and battery charges for an alleged unprovoked stabbing at a Shell gas station on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in unincorporated Norcross. The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. on August 27. Harris is accused of following a man into the store and slashing his face with a razor blade. Security footage identified Harris as the suspect, and the attack appears to be random and unprovoked. Harris was arrested and is currently held in the Gwinnett County jail. Police are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact detectives or Crime Stoppers, offering a cash reward for information leading to an arrest and indictment.

          Story 3: transport

Gwinnett County transportation officials are planning to expand microtransit services with the creation of a third microtransit zone in northwest Gwinnett, serving residents in Sugar Hill, Buford, and Suwanee. The budget request for this expansion was presented, aiming for capital funds in 2024 and operational funds in 2026. Microtransit, offered through the Ride Gwinnett app, provides on-demand rides within specific zones. Gwinnett has secured $2 million in grant funding for this project, contingent on a $500,000 local match, which is part of the 2024 budget request. The goal is to gradually expand microtransit services throughout the entire county.

          Story 4: arts

The Lawrenceville Arts Commission is launching Lawrenceville's first community mural project, aiming to transform Jackson Street into a vibrant artistic masterpiece. Artist Teresa Abboud will create the mural, which will welcome visitors to downtown Lawrenceville and promote community engagement. The project began with an open call for local artists to submit designs for a 1,867-square-foot mural, with a portion dedicated to community participation. After reviewing proposals, Abboud was selected as the finalist, and the City Council approved the artwork. This community mural project reflects Lawrenceville's creativity, unity, diversity, and spirit.

          Story 5: beds

A capacity study commissioned by the Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities has identified the need for five more behavioral health crisis centers and the creation of around 120 additional beds in the state hospital network for people involved in the criminal justice system by 2025. However, the state must also address workforce issues to fully utilize these

resources, especially with the new national 3-digit dialing code, 988, increasing demand for state services. The study also suggests that if crisis centers do not reach about 85% occupancy, more facilities will be required. The impact of 988 on Georgia's safety net remains uncertain.

          Story 6: costs

Georgia Power, clean energy advocates, and state regulators' staff have reached a settlement agreement that could result in several billion dollars in costs being borne by company shareholders for the Plant Vogtle nuclear expansion project. The agreement calls for capping the maximum amount paid by Georgia Power customers at $7.6 billion, with expenses above that covered by Georgia Power and its parent company, Southern Co. If approved, the deal would likely result in the average utility customer paying an additional $14 per month for the project. Construction and financing costs for Vogtle have surpassed $34 billion.
