John was preaching to the Jews, these are the chosen people of God. What he is saying to them is a radical message. He is saying, it is not enough to be a biological and physical descendant of Abraham to enter the Kingdom of Heaven and escape the wrath of God. John the Baptist is saying that to escape the wrath of God you must repent and be cleansed from all your sins and evil ways.

The Voice crying is saying “Prepare, make straight the Way of the LORD”. Having received pardon from the Lord. Now, engage actively in the Work of Grace to remove all obstacles in your life as you prepare for the Kingdom of God. Hebrews 12:1- let us lay aside every weight, (every encumbrance, every obstacle), and the sin that easily ensnares and entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set out for us.

Having been made complete in Him, this right, this power to become Sons of God through Jesus Christ is “Grace for Grace” - An immeasurable impartation of the free gift of salvation. Salvation is “by Grace Alone” (sola gratia). The law given by Moses was a gift of God’s grace that was succeeded by the Fuller grace revealed in Jesus. Grace and truth existed in Moses’s day, but they are fully revealed in the Person of Jesus Christ, the Lord from Heaven.

Moses had asked to behold the Lord’s glory but could only glimpse His back, as seen in Exodus 33:18-23. But, we, the spiritual temple of the Living God, are now Beholding the Glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ. It is amazing that the Kavod, the weightiness, the heaviness of the Presence of God, the Glory of God now dwells among us. In taking on a posture of Holy fear, the Prophet Habakkuk counsels in Habakkuk 2:20. But the LORD is in His holy temple; let all the earth be silent before Him.

The revelation of God revealed to Moses in the cloud has been revealed to us in Jesus Christ. “we behold His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth”. It is in JESUS that - Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other (Psalms 85:10).

The Logos, the eternal Word of God, who is Jesus Christ, the Son, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity did not merely appear in human form or human likeness, but he actually became flesh. That is to say that Jesus actually became a true human being and in doing so, Jesus possessed a human nature. And that is why of the many titles accorded to Jesus, one of the favourite title that Jesus used on Himself was the title “Son of Man”.

It is dreadful how sin can harden our hearts and make us callous to the Word of God. The Jews, in our Saviour's time, is a striking mirror of the danger the people of God face in the last days. This goes to show that it is possible for people to make a fatal shipwreck of their faith and to miss the visitation of the Lord even with the greatest advantages and means for information in their possession. The Jews regarded themselves as the people of God, they made their boast of His law and their relation to Abraham. Yet, they hated their MESSIAH when He came, they crucified Him.

Fallen human beings are not children of God by nature, this is the privilege only of those who have faith, a faith generated in them by the Sovereign action of God. The right to become the Sons of God is given in the new birth. The new birth takes place by the action of God the Holy Spirit giving life to those who were “dead in trespasses and sins”. This new birth is also called regeneration.

Malachi declares that as God’s chosen people, at the fulness of time, the Lord will return to His temple to complete the Redemption of his people. And this return shall be heralded by the “Messanger of the Covenant” who will bring a message of judgment and hope like the Prophet Elijah. The promise of God to send the Messager of the Covenant is now fulfilled in the Person of John the Baptist.
