Medical Students can’t learn everything with a Standardized Patient - Sometimes they need the help of some Fake Body Parts! This week Katie and Guest Gwen Grastorf discuss the tools they use (aka the fake body parts) in certain encounters to take the learning experience just a step further into reality (without the reality of getting accidentally injured by students in training). With help of medically accurate, dismembered body parts, both near and far from the SP’s, we discuss the out-of-body and bizarre experiences of using these SP educational aids, and why they are so cool and valuable in the medical educational setting.
Gwen Grastorf is a performer and actor based in the DC metro area, specializing in physical theatre. She is a company member with Happenstance Theater and creates devised work with them throughout the year. Gwen has also worked locally with Constellation Theatre, Taffety Punk, We Happy Few, Rorschach Theatre, Faction of Fools, the Tarot Reading, and Washington Revels. Gwen was raised in Frederick, Maryland, and got her degree at the University of MD, College Park. You can see more of her work, including the musical comedy web series Dr. Dour and Peach, at www.gwengrastorf.com

This week we're discussing Difficult Patients! Katie Culligan and guest Tyler Herman share how these types of encounters differ (and often fun to portray) patients in encounters who are having difficulties, preventing the students from starting their medical care, and through the experience teaching the students how to navigate these situations.
Tyler Herman (he/him) is an actor, husband, director, doggie-daddy, teacher, brother, and proud Cancerian born and raised in the lands not ceded by the Nacotchtank peoples in what is currently known as Silver Spring, MD. He is currently recovering from a pandemic and teaching with Ford's Theatre, Imagination Stage, Montgomery College, and does SP work as well. Tyler plays board games with friends and his wife/partner-in-crime Sarah and adorable papichon Covi.
Upcoming shows: He's directing FAILURE: A Love Story by Philip Dawkins at Walt Whitman High School May 19-21, 2022

In this week's episode, Katie Culligan and guest Kiernan McGowan discuss Partner Encounters! AKA an encounter with two SPs and a medical student who has to navigate their relationship or separate them while providing care to their patient.
Kiernan McGowan is a theatre artist, new dad, soccer fanatic, and taco aficionado. He has been a standardized patient for 7 years and a physical exam instructor for 5 years.

In this week's episode, our host Katie Culligan and guest Cliff McMullen discuss Breaking Bad News - not in the tv show way. While one facet of SP work is aiding in building Medical Students' patient examination skills, there's also a key part of SP work where SPs help Students educate and skill build on how to handle difficult and uncomfortable interactions with patients.
Cliff McMullen has been active in the arts, primarily acting, for approximately twenty years. A native Washingtonian, he as studied his craft locally and in New York. His theatre training is a combination of Shakespearean and contemporary theatre. He received his A.A. from the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York and has studied at the Folger Theatre in Washington, D.C., along with many regional and improvisational groups.
