As we’ve been reporting on KCBS, California will soon be losing representation in Congress. It’s part of a process that happens once every decade - newly released census data means a re-drawing of district lines and a re-apportionment of the 435 members of the house of representatives among the states.

How is California impacted by all of this?

It's just been learned that the effort to recall Governor Newsom has enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. Secretary of State Shirley Weber’s office reported the news on Monday. Meanwhile, in recent days, we’ve seen a number of announcements by Republicans and conservatives seeking statewide office. Last week, Caitlyn Jenner jumped into the fray, while today, Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert announced a challenge to newly sworn-in Attorney General, Rob Bonta.

However, statewide office has become elusive for Republicans in recent years. So, are these candidates trying anything new? Caitlyn Jenner today made it official, joining Republicans John Cox, Kevin Faulconer, and Doug Ose as a candidate to replace Governor Gavin Newsom in what is expected to be a Fall Recall election here in California.  

The Secretary of State’s office is soon expected to announce whether recall proponents have collected enough signatures to place the matter before voters later this year.

A CDC Advisory panel tomorrow is set to discuss whether or not the reinstate the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine. It’s an important first step to rebuilding trust in the vaccine amid a decline in the vaccination rate nationwide. It comes as health officials work to gauge the impact of the pause on those who are most vaccine hesitant.

As we’ve been reporting on KCBS Radio, Governor Newsom today declared a drought emergency along the Russian River watershed in Sonoma and Mendocino counties. The move also comes as we’re on the cusp of getting new information from the state on the future of the recall.
