  • #988: MM- The Dangers of Taking Acetaminophen and Drinking Alcohol

Do you drink and medicate? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. It is a well-known fact that acetaminophen can lead to liver damage when taken for prolonged periods. In fact, nearly 30,000 people are hospitalized with acute liver failure due to acetaminophen use. Well, alcohol can also lead to liver damage. When used together, it can lead to a slew of side effects and issues including: bleeding ulcers, upset stomach, and a rapid heartbeat. However, one of the most severe side effects is liver damage. You only have one liver and a transplant is nearly impossible to receive when damage was caused by alcohol use. It is recommended to talk to your doctor before taking acetaminophen if you consume three or more alcoholic drinks a day. • #986: MM- Drinking Coffee While Breastfeeding

Are you breastfeeding? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Breastfeeding mothers have to increase their calorie intake to keep up their milk production. However, sometimes, people use this as an excuse to eat whatever they want. It is essential that the mother eats healthy so the baby can obtain the nutrients it needs to grow. Foods like: melon, cantaloupe, prunes, oranges, carrots, pumpkin, spinach, yogurt, milk, quinoa, salmon, lean ground beef, nuts, seeds, and beans are not only good for you, but they are also good for your milk supply. Although it seems essential after long nights, caffeine consumption while breastfeeding can lead to a cranky baby. It is important to limit caffeine intake as well as avoiding seafood with high mercury. • #981: MM- Coffee Consumption and Pregnancy

Are you pregnant? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Caffeine consumption has been deemed safe as long as mothers stay below 200mg per day. But where you're getting your caffeine may affect the health of your baby. A new study out of University of Gothenburg has linked drinking coffee while pregnant to obese and overweight school aged children. The research showed that even a cup or two a day can increase the chances of having an overweight child. It is unclear whether or not it's the coffee itself or the caffeine. It's possible it could be a mixture of both, since coffee tends to have a higher caffeine amount. Talk to your doctor if you have questions about caffeine consumption during pregnancy.
