An oxford researcher says that we are in a sleep crisis, not just in America, but around the world. Our work and school schedules do not line up with our circadian rhythms which respond to natural light, not a clock. If he had it his way, we would all start work at 10am and teens wouldn't go to school until 11. According to Dr. Paul Kelly, this sleep issue is causing us a number of health issues, including the increased risk of diabetes and obesity.

  • #761 Natural Relief from a Nagging Cough - Medical Minute

Do you have a nagging cough from allergies or lingering after a cold? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. A nagging cough can be so annoying and disruptive. Over the counter cough syrups are filled with artificial colors and flavors and can also have nasty side effects. Getting natural relief from a cough can be easier than you think. First and foremost think about using things that have nutrients that help you heal, as well as curb the cough. First, take a lemon, cut it in half and then suck the juice out. High in vitamin C, lemons have long been used to help. If you can't take the lemon plain, you can add a little sugar to it. Then steep some fresh thyme in hot water for about 5-10 minutes. The flavonoids in thyme water will help break up the mucus while also relaxing the throat muscles, finally giving you relief from that terrible tickle that leads to those coughing fits. There is so much to learn about healthy living. That's why you should visit Stay Young America.com where you can find more helpful tips. That's Stay Young America.com

  • # 760 Latest In Medical Research - Explained

    The Staying Young Show

Show Title: "Latest In Medical Research - Explained"

Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

    Segment 1

Our world is ever changing. The developments in medical research is astounding. We decided to look at some of the latest research and break it down for our listeners. Some of this will surprise you. There was just so much, but these were our favorites.

    • Judy - This research is out of the NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. It has long been believed that the brain is exempt from "plumbing" or lymph drainage. New research shows that there is actually a lymph system that carries the waste out of the brain. This is significant, because it may give new clues to neurological disorders like MS and Parkinson's. This also sheds some light on the brain/immune system connection. Ironically, an Italian medical scientist in 1816 reported seeing these vessels but was ignored and it was never talked about again for 2 centuries! https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/10/171003111111.htm

    • Gaman - Brigham and Women's Hospital. Anti-inflammatory therapy cuts risk of lung cancer. Patients who received the anti-inflammatory therapy drug canakinumab had a reduction in the incidence of lung cancer and lung cancer mortality. In this high-risk patients, cancer death was reduced by 1/2 in the group of people who received the highest dosage of the drug. Further details can be found in the publication The Lancet. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/08/170828105410.htm

    • Judy - New study on bilinguals - Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, and George Washington University discovered newborns can distinguish between different languages. The brains of bilinguals is different because when they hear one language, the brain is translating it into both languages at the same time. Therefore bilinguals use more brain power and have greater neuroplasticity. https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/319642.php

  • #759 Sunscreen is important in the winter - Medical Minute

It's a little known fact that Sunscreen is important in the winter, maybe even more than on certain summer days. Research shows that there are two types of ultraviolet (UV) light from the sun that can damage your skin: ultraviolet A (UVA) and ultraviolet B (UVB) light. UVB light penetrates the superficial layers of the skin and causes skin to redden; it's responsible for sunburn and can also lead to skin cancer over time. UVA light, on the other hand, penetrates top and deeper layers of skin, causing cell damage that can lead to cancer, premature aging of the skin with wrinkles, spots, sagging, blotchiness. UVA light is tough to avoid because it passes through window glass, unlike UVB, and it stays the same strength ALL YEAR LONG! This is why sunscreen is also critical in the winter months regardless of where you like to spend your time. So be sure to keep that SPF 30 handy year-round.

  • # 758 Get Bikini Body Ready in the longer Colder Months - Medical Minute

Did you know that you can get ready for that bikini body during the long winter months by doing a simple task! Studies show that going for a walk when the weather is really cold – your body has to work overtime to get warm and you can burn up to 50% more calories than you would on the same walk in summer! That same exercise routine can give you a lot more bang for your buck, and get you ready for those shorts and tanks when the summer rolls around. But remember, go a little slower until you get warm and keep up the hydration, and if you find yourself wheezing in the cold weather, be sure to visit your doctor.

    MUSIC FOR DOC SHOCK (JIM)

This is an interesting study, and it is a little counter intuitive. The NIH/National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases has found that infants that are at risk for a peanut allergy, if fed peanuts early, are 81% less likely to develop that allergy. The LEAP (Learning Early About Peanut Allergy) came about because Israeli children apparently have lower rates of peanut allergy compared to Jewish children of similar ancestry, but who live in the UK. Israeli children begin consuming peanut-containing foods early in life, whereas it is generally introduced later in life in those living in the UK. Turns out the hunch was right, and infants should be introduced to common allergens like peanuts early on.

  • #755 Regular Exercise Routine Will Make You Feel Better - Medical Minute

Caught a cold or flu? Sitting on the couch and relaxing probably sounds like the best course of action until you're feeling better—but a new study from the university of New York suggests that your regular exercise routine will not only help ward off a minor illness, but will make you feel better WHILE you're under the weather. Improving circulation is good for your health. On the flip side, serious illness requires significant rest. And don't forget, some antibiotics, like quinolones can cause tendon rupture, so check with your physician first, before you kit the gym when taking medications for infection.
