  • #754 Are you better hydrated in colder weather? - Medical Minute

I bet you thought that you're better hydrated in colder weather? It makes sense…you're sweating less so you're able to hold more water. However, new studies suggest that the cold air and indoor heaters can actually dehydrate you MORE than a 20 minute walk…and it can severely and rapidly dry out your skin. Make sure you drink at least half your body weight number in ounces of water each day, summer and winter to keep yourself hydrated. Being properly hydrated will also help improve your skin health and ward off blemishes. Proper hydration will also improve your cognitive function and give you the energy you need to make it through the fall and winter months.

  • #753 Growth Hormone and the Aging Process

    The Staying Young Show

Show Title: "Growth Hormone and the Aging Process"

Co-Hosts: Judy Gaman, Walter Gaman, Mark Anderson

    Guest: None

    Segment 1

    Intro – 30 sec.

Today's show is all about the aging process, what makes us age and what we can do about it. There's lots of talk about the use of growth hormone and other anti-aging techniques, so today we will demystify the truths from the fiction.

    • What happens when we age? Aging is a process that is genetically determined and environmentally modulated.
    • Aging as a chronic disease
    • Why are Americans so obsessed with anti-aging? "Anti-aging Market - Global Industry Analysis, Size, Share, Growth, Trends and Forecast 2013 - 2019"reports that the anti-aging market will see a compounded annual growth rate of 7.8% between 2013 and 2019. Projected to be worth USD 191.7 billion by 2019.
    • Factors in the aging process (detail each)
      • Genetics/genomics
      • Nutrition
      • Exercise
      • Stress
      • Exposures
      • HORMONAL DECLINE

THAT MUSIC MEANS IT'S TIME FOR DOC SHOC. A TIME WHEN WE FIND SOMETHING SHOCKING IN THE NEWS OR WE'RE SHOCKED IT MADE THE NEWS.

This is a great study, because it proves that doctors don't learn everything in medical school – there is always more. This research is out of the NIH/National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke. It has long been believed that the brain is exempt from "plumbing" or lymph drainage. New research shows that there is actually a lymph system that carries the waste out of the brain. This is significant, because it may give new clues to neurological disorders like MS and Parkinson's. This also sheds some light on the brain/immune system connection. Ironically, an Italian medical scientist in 1816 reported seeing these vessels but was ignored and it was never talked about again for 2 centuries!

  • #752 Don't Hold Your Breath - Medical Minute

When's the last time you took a deep breath? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Have you ever noticed that when you get really busy or you're stress you tend to hold your breath? Well, it's common to hurry through the day and forget to stop and take some deep breaths. The body needs proper amounts of oxygen to function. Your brain needs it to think properly, your digestive system needs it to keep things moving, and even your immune system needs it to ward off colds and the flu. Maybe this explains why people who tend to meditate or take yoga have a healthier body overall. I want you each day to stop every hour on the hour (except when you're asleep of course) and take in three really deep breaths – slow and easy. I bet this simple change will bring you great benefits. Do you have an aquarium in your house? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Having an aquarium can improve your life. Who knew those cute little fish could have such health benefits. I remember being a child and it seemed that most houses had an aquarium, including mine. I always loved to stare at the fish and the little treasure chest at the bottom that would open and close with the bubbles. Well it turns out that that mindless staring probably had great benefits. Research shows that watching fish lowers stress and anxiety, almost like a form of hypnosis. People who own aquariums have lower blood pressure and tend to sleep better. Another study also showed that Alzheimer's patients who had aquariums ate more and were less combative. Perhaps we should get back to having aquariums in our homes, offices, and even the hospital. Want to sit back with some popcorn and a good movie? Well, it may be just what the doctor ordered. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Isn't it great when we find health benefits in an old favorite pastime? That's right I am giving you permission to watch and snack. However – there are a few caveats – first the popcorn must be air popped and no added salt or butter. Think of popcorn as a whole grain – one that actually tastes good. Popcorn contains powerful antioxidants that fight off free radicals within the body. Not to mention – it's full of fiber. And – about that movie – well make it a comedy. Watching funny movies and laughing will exercise your face and abs. It will also release endorphins – the feel good hormones in your body. Even if you're in a bad mood or down in the dumps, a good comedy can help turn things around. Oh – one last thing – no more than two movie nights a week - because remember – active exercise still trumps sitting! Some people believe that our society is grumpy because over the years we have adopted a hands off approach. Could there be something to all those pats on the back? Well researchers say yes. Studies show that marriages where couples show physical affection, like handle holding and snuggling have a higher success rate not to mention the people tend to live longer. Next time you see a friend or a relative, reach out and give 'em a big hug. While you're at it – tell them you love 'em too.
