  • # 784 Calcium and bones - Medical Minute

So much talk about calcium supplements. Do they help do they help build strong bones or are they a waste of time. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Several conflicting studies about calcium supplements have surfaced. Interestingly enough, the research that came out in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) stated that calcium supplements should not be recommended as part of a fracture prevention regimen. However, the International Osteoporosis Foundation has stated that low calcium is a problem, but they also take it a step further and mention vitamin D deficiencies. Vitamin D is necessary for the absorption of calcium. This is why you see milk and other dairy products with added vitamin D. So, if you ask me, calcium supplements alone may not solve the problem, but if you couple calcium with vitamin D supplements, not only are you going to feel better, your bones will be stronger. Stronger bones mean less chance of a fall or injury from a fall. For more unique tips on staying young and staying healthy visit Stay Young America.com that's Stay Young America.com

  • # 783 Parents Be Aware of Obesity Pitfalls for Children - Medical Minute

Is your child a little on the chunky side? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Today I want to talk to the parents out there. What if I told you that something you are doing or not doing is giving your child a death sentence? Now that I have your attention, take a look at your kids. Are they overweight? If they are, new research shows that they are at risk for early heart disease and diabetes. Nothing could break your heart more than seeing your child suffer as a young adult, or die and early death. The good news is that you can do something about it. As a parent you have an incredible amount of control over the food your children eat and the amount of activity they get. Basically, if it's not in the house, they won't eat it. And as a parent, it's your job to avoid those drive thrus. It's also your job to set limits. Limit the amount of TV and electronics and delegate chores that keep your kids moving. You owe it to your kids to give them the best start in life. • #782 Dried Plums - Medical Minute

Looking for a healthy snack that is sweet and may help you live longer? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute Dried plums are a great go too. They are conveniently packaged and don't need refrigeration. While dried plums are a sweet treat, surprisingly enough they have a low glycemic index, meaning they won't spike your body's sugar levels. Packed with antioxidants, they also help your body fight against free radicals. The fiber, magnesium, and potassium content of dried plums is significant, helping promote good health and a healthy weight. One study out of Texas A&M University and the University of North Carolina proves that dried plums have yet another added benefit, they help improve the gut microbiome. The microbiome does everything from prevent cancer and metabolic syndrome, to improve the immune system. • # 780 Put Kids In Charge Of Their Own Health - Medical Minute

It can be incredibly powerful to put kids in charge of their own health. Give them the reigns at dinner, let them have the power to create healthy food for themselves. Have children make a potato fixin's bar by choosing their own toppings for half a baked potato. Arrange separate bowls and serving utensils for refried beans, black-eyed peas, chopped chicken tenders, shredded low-fat cheese, sliced cherry tomatoes, thinly chopped spinach, and grated carrots for children to build their own baked potato. It so important to cook together too. Allow children to learn about foods by letting them help prepare them. By teaching your kids the value of cooking at home and family meal time is something that will also bless your children's children. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. • # 779 Adults Need To Be Smart In Their Protein Choices - Medical Minute

Adults need to be smart in their protein choices so we can get the most out of what we eat. Studies suggest that our choices in protein aren't the best. For example hamburgers and hot dogs are not the best options. Start with lean choices for meat and meat alternates, these will give you high protein with less fat. Don't make the mistake of adding cream sauces, butter, and gravy to your meats – that just adds calories, fat, and carbs. If you cook at home, be sure to trim the fat before you cook, that keeps the fat from seeping into the meat. You can keep your meat healthy by searing it first to hold the natural juices and keep it tender. We want to empower you with as much health information as possible. You could also try "Peanut Butter Roll-Ups" (spread a thin layer of peanut butter on a small whole-grain tortilla, top with grated carrots, and roll it). • # 775 Food and Beverage Companies use extra sugar to reel in kiddos - Medical Minute

Food and beverage companies use extra sugar and colorful marketing to reel kiddos in. All those extra calories are empty calories, leaving our children with a lack of nutrients. Added sugars make it hard for children to maintain a healthy weight and a healthy brain. Since fruits are naturally sweet, it can be easy to get children to eat them without adding sweeteners like sugar, corn syrup, and honey. Serve your kids fresh fruit rather than dried or the fruit snack version---cut pieces into funny shapes or a cool design to draw in the little ones. And remember, berries have high nutritional content and pears are low on the glycemic index. Good nutrition makes for smarter and happier kids.We want to empower you with as much health information as possible.
