  • # 794 Holiday Prep - Medical Minute

The holidays are just around the corner. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Are you prepared for this holiday season? I am not talking about presents, parties, and wrapping. I am talking about setting your goals and establishing limits. Start now and define exactly what your holidays are going to look like. For example, don't over schedule, set a limit of perhaps 5 parties over the course of two months. Also, give yourself a cheat day when it comes to food. If you are only eating sweets once a week instead of once a day, you can prevent the addition of those holiday pounds. Lastly, be sure to set limits on your day, both work and night life. You need to be sure you are getting enough sleep so that you can function during this busy time and not get burned out. A little prep can make your holidays healthier and more enjoyable. • # 793 Skin Cancer - Medical Minute

How often are you looking at your skin? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. You should do a thorough skin evaluation on yourself at least once a year. Make sure someone else is also checking those hard to see places, like your back. Believe it or not, 70,000 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year right here in the United States. When looking at moles, notice any changes, irregular borders, the color of the mole, and the size. Talk to your doctor about the moles you have and don't assume they are nothing to worry about. If caught early, skin cancers can be removed and the cancer can be stopped. Also, be sure to use SPF 30 when out in the sun and use it year round, not just in the summer months. Furthermore, avoid tanning beds. No tan is worth your life. Staying Young and staying healthy is easier than you think. We are on with America's favorite psychologist, Dr. Fran Walfish and if you need some help with your marriage – this is the show for you as Dr. Fran unveils her 7 Secrets to a Happy Couple

    Discuss

    1. Express your feelings in the moment. Do not allow anger and disappointment to build up inside you. Say what you feel clearly and respectfully. It will free you.
    2. Give yourself Special Time. Take 10-15 minutes each day to be with yourself and chill. You'd be surprised how challenging this is when you have a spouse and children tugging at you 24/7. Give yourself short, undivided, positive attention each day for nourish and fortify you.

    Happy Couples:

Let differences work for them. All couples are made with two different people. No two people in the world are just alike. And, after working with hundreds of couples, I'm convinced opposites often do attract. But, great couples learn to build upon those differences. They build upon each other's strengths and let each other minimize their weaknesses. "Two are better than one" — the author of Ecclesiastes says — and great couples live this truth.

Extend grace for the minor annoyances. Can we just be honest? People do stuff that gets on our nerves at times. That's true of all of us — even with the people — maybe even especially with the people we love the most. Great couples have learned not to let those little things distract from the major things — like love and commitment.

Serve each other. There are no 50-50 splits of responsibility in a great marriage. Great couples learn to sacrificially serve one another. In the best relationships, it would be difficult to judge who serves one another more. There may be be times one gives 100%, because the other can't give anything. And there are other times the other spouse gives 100%. And neither complains when it's their turn to give all.

Prioritize their time. Great couples spend time together. Life is busy for all of us. These couples schedule time together. They find things to do that each of them enjoy. And, they say no to other things that would keep them from having adequate time together.

Keep no secrets. There are no hidden issues among great couples. They are vulnerable with each other. Both partners open themselves up to the other person completely.

Publicly support each other. Great couples are supportive of each other in public. They don't tear each other down in public. They handle private issues in private.

Keep no record of wrongs. Great couples learn to forgive. There aren't any lingering issues that haven't been resolved.

  • # 789 Preemie News - Medical Minute

If you have ever been around a preemie, you know how fragile they are. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. The special intravenous nutrition is what helps preemies thrive outside the womb. The University of Montreal made a great discovery which may save the lives of hundreds if not thousands of preemies. They studied babies between 26-31 weeks being fed intravenously with a highly nutritious substance. As it turns out, if this IV food mixture is exposed to light, it can actually produce oxidants that the baby is unable to fight off due to its premature immune system. Keeping the IV nutrition from light, gives the baby more of a chance of survival. The study showed as much as a 50% reduction in mortality– Sometimes the simplest things can make the biggest differences. This information is new, so if you know someone with a preemie, you may want to share this study with them. Take a look in your pantry today. How much packaged and processed food are you buying each time you go to the store? Better yet, how much are you consuming on a daily basis? This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. New research from the American Journal of Preventative Medicine shows that purchases of prepackaged and process foods is up, while the nutrition content is down. This means our country is becoming the fat and malnourished at the same time. If you're a big dipper and you just can't avoid adding a little something to your veggies, forgo the dressings and opt for something a little healthier, like hummus. You can retrain your pallet. New research shows that as much as 35% Americans have a vitamin E deficiency. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Vitamin E is found naturally in vegetable and wheat germ oils, cereals, chicken, beef, eggs, fruits, and vegetables. You can also take Vitamin E as a supplement. This vitamin plays a vital role in maintaining a healthy weight, preventing cancer, and dementia. Most people don't realize that Vitamin E dissolves in fat. Could it be that the low fat and fat free diets are robbing our bodies of the Vitamin E it needs? A new study out of Ohio State University found that taking Vitamin E with a glass of milk or a square of cream cheese can increase the absorption rate by as much as 3 times. Even if you are young, vitamin E plays a vital role in the prevention of metabolic syndrome, a precursor to diabetes.
