  • # 814 What in the world is "pregnancy brain?" - Medical Minute

This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. What in the world is "pregnancy brain?" A new study focused on changes to working memory during pregnancy do show a small effect on the brain, though other studies show no negative impacts whatsoever—especially in the long-term. There's actually growing evidence that being pregnant makes women more organized and smarter. It makes sense, though, since pregnant women and new mothers have a lot more to worry about and think about — for their brains to keep up they may even be getting a boost. • (Inspire) challenge every listener to give of their times, talents, or finances at least once per month

How much television are you watching? If you are like 80% of Americans, you are watching 3.5 hours a day – which is far too much. A new study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows a link between television watching times and the 6 leading causes of death. Heart disease, diabetes, influenza/pneumonia, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, and cancer risks are all increased with the number of hours dedicated to time in-front of the tube. The study looked at over 200K people and found that 3-4 hours of television watching per day was linked to a 15% more likely to die, and at 7 or more hours, that risk increased to 47%. My advice to you – plan your television time, don't surf. Get in and see what you want to see, and get out.

We are spending the whole hour talking about why it is good for your health to give. You may say, well I don't have any money to give to others – well we're not just talking about money – we are also talking about giving of your time and talents. Jenny Santi, author of the book The Giving Way to Happiness: Stories Behind the Life-Changing Power of Giving has some great stories to tell us about.

    Discuss

    1. What are some of your favorite stories
    2. What do you say to those who "don't have time" or "don't have money"
    3. Why Good Things Happen to Good People, Stephen Post, a professor of preventative medicine at Stony Brook University, reports that giving to others has been shown to increase health benefits in people with chronic illness, including HIV and multiple sclerosis.
    4. A 1999 study out of the University of California, Berkeley, found that elderly people who volunteered for two or more organizations were 44% less likely to die over a five-year period than were non-volunteers, even after taking into account age, exercise habits, general health, and poor habits.
    5. Stephanie Brown of the University of Michigan studied elderly couples . She and her colleagues found that those who provided help to friends, relatives, or neighbors, or gave emotional support to their spouses, had a lower risk of dying over a five-year period than those who didn't. Interesting finding in this study – the giver benefited the most because receiving help wasn't linked to a reduced death risk.
    6. Researchers suggest that may improve physical health and longevity because it decreases stress. In a 2006 study at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Tennessee, people who provided social support to others had lower blood pressure. http://greatergood.berkeley.edu/article/item/5_ways_giving_is_good_for_you

This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. We all know the five senses. Sight, smell, taste, hearing, and touch—but did you know that those are just the beginning of our sensing capabilities? Our bodies have many other senses too. Balance, temperature, and time, as well as proprioception the body awareness that helps us not walk into things all the time and nociception, our sense of pain. Doctors suggest that these powerful abilities our bodies regulate are more important for our functioning that the well-known others, but they largely go unnoticed. This is Judy Gaman, author of the award winning book Age to Perfection: How to Thrive to 100, Happy, Healthy, and Wise and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. It's the worst when something you really wanted to eat falls on the floor. But if you grab it in five seconds, it's ok, right? The five-second-rule isn't a real thing. Bacteria can contaminate a food within milliseconds. Mythbusting tests show that moist foods attract more bacteria than dry foods, but there's no "safe duration." Instead, safety depends on how clean the surface you dropped the food on is. Whether you eat it or not after that is up to you, but if the people that walk on that floor are also walking around New York City, for example, we wouldn't recommend it. Each day I bring you one new tip that will help you stay young and vibrant. Can sugar and chocolate really give you acne? Well, for one month, scientists fed dozens of people candy bars containing 10 times the usual amount of chocolate, and dozens of others fake chocolate bars. • # 808 Listen To Your Body – Medical Minutes

Today's tip is all about learning to listen to your body. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. We tend to get so busy these days that we forget to slow down and hear what our body is saying. Did you know that most people tend to eat when they're really just thirsty. This causes a flood of unnecessary calories. Another common thing people ignore is when the body tells you it's tired. That's not the time to get on social media or glue yourself to the tube. Nope – this is when you sleep. Ignoring your body and the things it's trying to tell you will only lead to bigger issues later on. If you're too busy to listen to your body, I guess you have time for a major illness, because ignoring symptoms never pays off. Listen to your body and improve your chances for a longer and healthier life. If you are taking a PPI – Proton Pump Inhibitor, the medications used to treat ulcers and acid reflux, you need to hear this. Two new studies have emerged that show PPI class drugs can actually cause damage to the kidneys. These drugs were never intended to be used on a long term basis, but many people have been on them for years, causing irreversible damage to their kidneys.

A study out of Johns Hopkins University followed over 10K adults with normal kidney function from 1996 to 2011. They found that PPI users were between 20% and 50% more likely to develop CKD than non-PPI users, even after accounting for baseline differences. This discovery was replicated in a second study with over 240,000 patients who were followed from 1997 to 2014. This is significant!

  • # 805 Tailor Your Exercise to your Mood - Medical Minute

Are you in the mood for exercise? Maybe it depends on what type of exercise. This is Judy Gaman and this is your Stay Young Medical Minute. Tailoring your workout to your mood or you mental needs may be the trick to sticking with it. If you're feeling angry or have pent up frustration, sign up for a kickboxing class and kick your way to a happier you. If you've been feeling lonely, join the Zumba party and start dancing and making friends – the best part about this dance party is everyone is sober! Now, if your job stress is getting to you, take time to refocus by going to yoga class. And if you're like me, your moods change so don't be afraid to mix up your exercise routine. Whatever you do, just chose something, because nothing works better on mood than exercise does.
