  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E3

Episode 3 of Season 6 launched promptly at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio and then crashed back to earth like a failed rocket launch.  It was restarted and got back on the air at 19h17.  The joys of internet radio.  This was the first episode going out on fibre.  While podcast people have not been affected, listeners to the live show have had a really rough ride of late thanks to load shedding in South Africa.  Since late 2022 it has either been my cell towers collapsing (Telcom) or if mine are up then the guys trying to listen have no power.  It is, as they say, a shit show.

When we did get going we started with Aerosmith and 'Young Lust' of the hugely successful Pump album. From there we had Ratt and then Sixx A.M., with 'Lies of the Beautiful People’.  There were two tracks with a Metallica theme running through, W.A.S.P. with 'For Whom the Bell Tolls' and then Volbeat with an excellent cover of ‘Don’t Tread on Me’ to keep the show Rambling On.  Speaking of which I used Led Zepellin with ‘Ramble On’ and Judas Priest with ‘Better By You Better Than Me’ to talk a bit about the development of modern Metal.

On the local scene, we checked out more of Infanteria’s phenomenal album Patriarch and a track called ‘Repent Through the Orders You Seek’.  It was a pleasure to play the brand new track by South African Metal heavyweights Deadline.  The track is called 'Cult of Prometheus, it has just been released, Dave Devo Oosthuizen who works tirelessly to promote SA music, sent it to me and it is a pleasure to give it some airtime.  We had classics from ACDC, and Motörhead, plenty from the ladies, Laura Cox, Samantha Fish, Doll Skin, and L7.  This weeks Songs that may be about South Africa included 'The Ditch' (Dave Hause), 'Don’t Lie To Me' (Dokken), High 'n' Dry (Def Leppard), 'Sucker Born' (Samantha Fish) and 'Take Back Your Life' from Disturbed.

This week The Immortals, i.e. classic metal tracks that are over 7 min long and will last forever, came courtesy of Deep Purple with ‘Child in Time’.  Following on was hard and I delegated the job to Tool and their amazing track about two additional chromones ‘Forty-Six and 2'.  A highlight of the show was a track sent to me called ‘Goodbye To The World and The Whole Damn Thing’ by a band called deadfilmstar.  I really enjoyed it, it has such an evil feel to it.  It is Mansonesque but very fresh, check it out.

Wrapping up we had UK Punky stuff from The Police, the Jam, and then for good measure, we had Böhse Onkels and a track called 'Saufen ist wie Weinen' which means drinking is like crying.  It is the best Böhse Onkels track I have ever heard, love that little bluesy intro.  The new Bush album The Art of Survival gave us a track called ‘More Than Machines’.  Metalheads can go to the last 10 minutes of the show for Obituary and In Flames, Nu Metal fans can go twenty minutes before the end and catch Birthday Boy Kid Rock and a track off Rock ‘n’ Roll Jesus and Limp Bizkit with the amazing Wes Borland on guitar doing a track called Rollin’, thanks as always for tuning in guys, much appreciated, Adios Amoeba’s catch you next week.

Artists featured:  Aerosmith, Ratt, Sixx AM, Thin Lizzy, Y&T, The Quireboys, Def Leppard, W.A.S.P., Volbeat, Sword, Infanteria, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, Drowning Pool, Disturbed, Laura Cox, Samantha Fish, Doll Skin, L7, Dave Hause, Slash (feat Chris Cornell), Motörhead, ACDC, Dokken, Manowar, Deadfilmstar, Deadline, Deep Purple, Tool, The Dead Daisies, The Police, The Jam, Böhse Onkels, Bush, Kid Rock, Limp Bizkit, Obituary, In Flames, David Lee Roth

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E2

Season 6 episode 2 went out live on 12 January 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio, once again the live show was ruined by the load shedding issues we are suffering with in South Africa.  Power out for around 6 hours every 24 hours so the cell phone towers just cannot cope.  The show kicked off with Aaron Keylock and cool slow bluesy track called ‘Just One Question’.  The slowish start was kicked into touch by Pat Travers and his party anthem ‘Snortin Whiskey’.  The Cult with ‘King Contrary Man’ was a breath of fresh air, Electric has stood the test of time, Rick Rubin did an amazing job and Billy Duffy was just magnificent on this album.

Sadly, we heard about the passing of Jeff Beck this morning.  He died suddenly after contracting bacterial meningitis.  We took a listen to a track he did with Ozzy Osbourne on the latest Ozzy album (A Top 10 TSORR album for 2022), called ‘A Thousand Shades’.  I interspersed quite a bit of Jeff’s work throughout the show.  TSORR is all about guitar driven music and Jeff Beck was one of the finest exponents of that.  RIP Jeff.  On a happier note, fellow Yardbird Jimmy Page is doing just fine and turned 79 this week.  To celebrate I allowed ‘Whole Lotta Love’ to make its TSORR debut.  It was a bit like Judas Priest getting into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, everyone knows they should have been there but for some reason it took a long time.  Iron Maiden and Burning Witches out of Switzerland followed on .

Celebrating out the anniversary of the launch of a track that changed everything in 1991 was a highlight of the show. I am talking about Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’, released this week 32 years ago.  Don’t you just feel ancient now? 😊.  We followed it with another classic from 1991 in the form of ‘ Bullet In The Head’ from Rage Against the Machine.  Poison and Bon Jovi represented the ‘80s and then we took in another track in the new series I am calling ‘Songs that could be written about South Africa’, Tom Petty with ‘Straight Into Darkness’.  From there it was goosebump time, Springsteen off his On Broadway album and a perfect version of 'My Hometown' originally on the Born In The USA album.  It's the lyrics and the way he tells the story that is just so visceral.

This show is probably as mellow as TSORR gets so we did some ACDC, Airbourne and Slayer to restore some balance before checking out this weeks track in the weekly Immortals section.  This is where we take an immortal rock song that is longer than 7 minutes and is as iconic as iconic can be.  David Bowie would have been 76 this week so it was fitting to feature 'The Width of a Circle' off The Man Who Sold The World as this weeks immortal track.  From there is was the downhill run, two more tracks to say cheers to Jeff Beck, ZZ Top's Rough Boy where Jeff takes a solo and a cover of 'Like A Rolling Stone' off the Chimes of Freedom compilation with Seal on vocals , it is absolutely superb.  We ended with some heavy stuff from Arch Enemy and Deangersmith off his brilliant Lead Me to Your Taker (Disable The Corrupt) album and a powerful swipe at the massive overreach we experienced during the pandemic.

Artists featured:  Aaron Keylock, Pat Travers, Metallica, Rainbow, The Cult, Michael Monroe, Ozzy Osbourne, Danko Jones, Ignite, Therapy, Led Zeppelin, Burning Witches, Iron Maiden, Coheed & Cambria, Nirvana, Rage Against The Machine, Poison, Bon Jovi, The Temperance Movement, Sons of Liberty, Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, ACDC, Airbourne, Slayer, Porcupine Tree, David Bowie, The Rolling Stones, ZZ Top, Jeff Beck & Seal, Deangersmith, Arch Enemy, Obituary, Laura Cox

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S6E1

Welcome to 2023 and Season 6 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Episode 1 got going on 5 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 with a track called 'Emaheeval' by Desperado.  Desperado was a post-Twisted Sister band comprising Dee Snider, Bernie Tormé, Clive Burr, and Marc Russell.  It's an excellent album that was shelved in a nasty bit of spite by Bob Krasnow and it’s a pity because if it had been released at the time it would have done well.  Dee has done OK though.  Next up Aerosmith with Walk This Way, what a riff!!  Joe Perry at his finest.  We continued with some Thundermother out of Stockholm, who are doing a great job of paying reparations for the music ABBA subjected the world to in the '70s, nice work ladies, and thank you 😊.

We had a bit of US Punk with The Offspring and Anti-Flag and then went back into the late ‘80s for some White Lion and Bulletboys with 'Kid With a 1000 Faces' and 'Badlands' respectively.   Australia's finest gave us a track called ‘This Means War’ which reminded me of Blue Suede Shoes for some reason, I am talking about ACDC of course.  From there we went bluesy with Rory Gallagher and South Africa’s very own Dan Patlansky who has done so well with his latest release Shelter of Bones.  Next, back to Australia for some Electric Mary and a track called ‘One in a Million’, then we went to France for Laura Cox with a song called 'Australian Rock', it's confusing I know, all this Aussie stuff.  Laura Cox is really putting out some good stuff, check her out.  Metallica and Hellyeah made things heavy again and then we took some time out to listen to an absolute ‘70s Rock Classic in the form of ‘Can’t You hear Me Knocking’ off Sticky Fingers.  This masterpiece from The Rolling Stones marks the start of the plan to play more ‘70’s over 7 min classics in Season 6.

We hit the last hour with some UK Punk, ‘Mary of the Fourth Form’ from The Boomtown Rats and ‘Duchess’ from the Stranglers.  We had Thunder off their latest release Dopamine and then a track from Sakis Tolis off the Among the Fires of Hell album, we stayed heavy with Soilwork and a track called ‘Harvest Spine’.  There was a lot from the ladies on this show, we heard a  band called Love Bites out of Japan, The Donnas, and something newish from Brody Dalle and her band The Distillers.  It comes from an album called Live In Lockdown.  We went out blazing with Obituary and the title track off the forthcoming ‘Dying of Everything’.

Artists featured:  Desperado, Aerosmith. Leslie West, Thunder Mother, The L.A. Maybe, The Offspring, Anti-Flag, Bulletboys, White Lion, ACDC, Jorn, Rory Gallagher, Dan Patlansky, Electric Mary, Laura Cox, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Hellyeah, Rammstein, Marilyn Manson, Dino Jelusic, Buckcherry, The Rolling Stones, The Boomtown Rats, The Stranglers, Thunder, The Dead Daisies, Sakis Tolis, Soilwork, Rush, Pride & Glory, Love Bites, Blue Scream, Man As Machine, The Distillers, The Donnas, Obituary, Eluveitie.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E52

Finally, we reached the end of Season 5.  The final show, episode 52 went out live at 19h00 on 29 Dec 2022 on rebel Rock Radio.  At the risk of boring you all I just have to say that once again it all happened under really trying circumstances.  I hope you all appreciate the lengths I have to go through to get this show out.  The Wi-Fi has been non-existent all day, I can’t even upload the MCR Rock Review.  We have more load shedding in an hour's time and I can’t get onto the Rebel Rock Site so I am flying blind.  That said this show is a wrap-up of all the albums we checked out this year.  Well, not all the albums because we checked out 65 new releases this year.  Out of 157 albums added this year 65 were 2022 releases.  I did my best to play you as much as possible from these 65.

We kicked off with Halestorm and the title track of their release Back From The Dead.  From there we had Motor Sister and a track called 'Can’t Get Enough'.  From there we listened to ‘Take What You Want’ off Diamond Star Halos, the latest offering from Def Leppard.  We went to Germany and took a listen to Rammstein and to Sinner.  Desolation Angels out of the UK (with South African bassist Clive Pearson who used to be in a SA Metal band called Lynx back in the ‘80s) gave us a track called 'Walking On Water' off Burning Black.  We also heard from Tony Martin ex Black Sabbath and Joe Lynn Turner ex Rainbow.  Both these guys both put out strong albums in the form of Thorns and Belly of the Beast respectively.

Five Finger Death Punch and Disturbed both made the cut and sounded awesome.  It was time for a bit of Metal from Soulfly and a track called 'Ancestors'.  We also heard 'Black Butterfly' from Candlemass.  After checking out some late ‘80’s early ‘90s style rock from the Dead Daisies, Skid Row, and Aussie youngsters Dead City Ruins we hit the blues with our very own Dan Patlansky whose Shelter of Bones was given the No 2 spot by Blues Rock Magazine.  The South African scene was also represented by L.A. Cobra, The Devil’s Party Band, Infanteria, and Diverted Disorder.

Finally, we got to the top of the list and played out with Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, The Halo Effect, and Megadeth, and the best album of 2022 according to me went to Arch Enemy with Deceivers.  We had a few minutes left so we checked out with scenes from forthcoming attraction in 2023 in the form of Blink 182 and the single they dropped months ago called ‘Edging’.  I hope to see you all for 2023 and Season 6 of The Story of Rock and Roll.

PS.  Notable mentions we just didn’t get to Keator, Slipknot, Soilwork, Ghost, and Machine Head, what a year for music.

Artists featured:  Halestorm, Herman Frank, Motor Sister, Def Leppard, Sinner, Rammstein, Joe Lynn Turner, Nickelback, Desolation Angels, Disturbed, Five Finger Death Punch, Eddie Vedder, Billy Idol, Alter Bridge, Tony Martin, Candlemass, Soulfly, The Dead Daisies, Skid Row, Dead City Ruins, Dan Patlansky, L.A. Cobra, Scorpions, Kid Rock, Hell Fire, Infanteria, Sakis Tolis, The Devil’s Party Band, Diverted Disorder, Queensrÿche, Ozzy Osbourne, Parkway Drive, The Halo Effect, Megadeth, Arch Enemy

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E51

Welcome to the second last show of Season 5, i.e. Episode 51.  It marks the 5th birthday of The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  This episode went out live on 22 December 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 sharp.  Sadly the cell phone towers did not play ball and the signal was a serious killjoy.  The show however went out just perfectly on the podcast.  I used the opportunity to showcase some of the tracks that make TSORR what it is.  Some of these tracks are pretty deep and have backstories that are detailed in the book The Story of Rock and Roll.

This show gives an incredibly short reminiscence of some TSORR history and a bit of a run-through of the bands that form the foundations of The Story of Rock and Roll.   The idea was to celebrate the music and show appreciation for listeners who have supported the show for the last 5 years.  The celebration kicked off with The Boomtown Rats and the opening track off The Fine Art of Surfacing.  This album is part of the critical few albums that mark the start of my lifelong love of rock and roll. From there we moved to KISS and Judas Priest, two bands without which there wouldn’t be a TSORR.  The tracks ‘Strutter’ and ‘Metal Gods’ did the honours.  Next, we covered two very important SA bands, Radio Rats with ZX Dan and Rabbitt with ‘Working For The People.

We checked out some of the key bands that form a big chunk of TSORR, Rainbow, Deep Purple, ACDC, and Ozzy Osbourne.  From there we covered some Punk because without a slight UK Punk detour this would not be TSORR.  We listened to The Strangler with Nice n’ Sleazy, Sex Pistols with ‘Submission’, and Stiff Litte Finger with ‘Alternative Ulster’ off Inflammable Material.  We went back to the Metal with Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, Accept, W.A.S.P., and Metallica.

From there we moved on to the Radio Show and the Mix FM days and how Leon Ekonomides offered me my own show in 2017.  I played the track Leon and I bonded over when he interviewed me about the book.  The track was ‘Gunfire’ by Blue Cheer.  We also celebrated the first-ever TSORR podcast (No 12, check it out if you haven’t heard it) by starting with Jack Hammer and Mr. Midnight.  It felt right to follow up with a track I played on the show when Piet Botha passed away in 2019 called Highway To The Sun by Johnathan Martin.  We also remembered some other losses that we marked in time on TSORR, Eddie Van Halen in 2020 and Charlie Watts in 2021.  With the signal so bad and so many people struggling with the signal the only way I could do this justice was to add another hour to the show.  What the hell you only turn 5 once.  The last hour was a tribute to some amazing people who have supported the show and just as we were reaching the high point the whole fucking thing ended abruptly with a systems crash that prevented me from saying thanks and goodnight.  Such is life, we will have another bash at getting this right next year

Artists featured:  Sophie Lloyd (feat Nathan James), The Boomtown Rats, Kiss, Judas Priest, Rabbit, Radio Rats, Rainbow, Deep Purple, ACDC. Ozzy Osbourne, The Stranglers, Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden,, Accept, W.A.S.P., Metallica, Blue Cheer, Rush, Jack Hammer, Johnathan Martin, Van Halen, The Rolling Stones, Rory Gallagher, Cold Chisel, ACDC, Seether, Buckcherry, Joe Bonamassa, Kid Rock, The Clash, The Distillers, Massive Wagons, Foo Fighters, Halestorm, Thin Lizzy, Rose Tattoo, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Tom Petty, Neil Young, The Uninvited, The Cruel Sea, Social Distortion, My Chemical Romance, Fokofpolisiekar

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E50

S5E50 aired on 15 December 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio.  December is usually quiet on the station but for TSORR it is always very special, this particular show celebrated the official start of the December holidays.  Next week TSORR turns 5 and the week after that Episode 52 the season closer takes you through all the rock and metal highlights of 2022.  But more of that later.  This episode kicked off with White Lion and a track off the Fight To Survive called ‘In the City’.  From there we went to the USA and a band called Motor Sister, and Scotland for a bit of Nazareth and ‘May The Sunshine’, a rock classic if ever there was one.  Electric 6 and System of a Down took us to the weirder side of rock with ‘I Wish This Song Was Louder’ and BOOM! Respectively.

From there we checked out the ladies, Laura Cox out of France is new to me, what an awesome guitarist, we listened to Freaking Out Loud off her Burning Bright album.  Big thanks to Norman for that one, I had totally missed Laura.  We also checked out another track off the new Halestorm album, Back From The Dead.  Buckcherry, no strangers to TSORR hit us with Fallout and Sixx A.M. with ‘Stars’.  Metallica got us back into the heavy side of things and we stayed there with ‘Spreading the Disease’ from Queensryche and some Accepts and some Candlemass.  It all went down very well.

South Africa is blessed with two of the greatest blues guitarists around, Dan Patlansky who has just been awarded the second-best album of 2022 by Blues Rock Magazine for his Shelter of Bones, (this is a huge achievement guys,  Dan beat out blues giants Walter Trout, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, and Edgar Winter)  and Richard Pryor in his band Pebbleman.  We took a listen to 'Devil’s Dopamine' and a track called ‘Edge of Nails’ from Richard’s Pebbleman project.  Pink Floyd’s ‘Young Lust’ gave another classic track and then we hit the punky part of the show with The Boomtown Rats, The Clash, and a tribute to Jet Black, the drummer from The Stranglers, RIP Jet, thanks for the music.  I am sure that Jet and Dave Greenfield are having a pint right this very moment.

Taking us into the home stretch we hit the rock with Motörhead’s classic ‘Stay Clean’, The Dead Daisies, and some serious thrash from Death Angel and a track called ‘Mistress of Pain’.  Then it was back to South Africa and three in a row from Cutting Jade, Arapaho, and Francois Van Coke.  We closed out with Alter Bridge and a track that sums it all up tonight titled 'Holiday'.  All the best to you all and to everyone who went on leave this week, enjoy it, Memento Mori!

Artists featured:  White Lion, Motor Sister, Nazareth, Rival Sons, Walking Papers, Electric Six, System of a Down, Texas Hippie Coalition, Joe Lynn Turner, Laura Cox, Halestorm, Buckcherry, Sixx A.M. Little Caesar, Little Steven, Metallica, Queensrÿche, Accept, Candlemass, Dan Patlansky, Pebbleman, Pink Floyd, Audioslave, The Boomtown rats, The Clash, The Stranglers, My Chemical Romance, The Dead Daisies, Kid Rock, Death Angel, Cutting Jade, Arapaho, Francois Van Coke, Mastodon, Disturbed, Ayron Jones, The Distillers, Alter Bridge

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E49

Episode 49 of Season 5 aired on 8 December 2022 at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It began with the very track that started me on this 40-plus-year journey down Rock and Roll Road i.e. ‘Detroit Rock City’, the opening track from Kiss’s Destroyer.  That album changed my life, and may have changed yours too.  If you get yourself a copy of The Story of Rock and Roll you may find some parallels.  From Kiss, we went to The Clash and the title track of the London Calling album.   Next, we got a deluge of guitar from Jake E. Lee and Ivan Ivankovic.  Ivan on a track called 'World in Fear' and Jake with Badlands back in 1984.  Randy Rhoads would have turned 66 this week so we wished him happy birthday in heaven and then checked out his more than able replacement Zakk Wylde in his band Black Label Society and a track called Lovin’ Woman' off the Unblackened album.

We checked out The Raven Age and a track called 'The Death March' and that fitted well with yet another track of the latest Queensrÿche album Digital Noise Alliance.  We had some Lynyrd Skynyrd with ‘Call me The Breeze’ and then another bit of classic rock in the form of 'Call On Me' from Bad Company.  Now if you are listening internationally then I am sorry I bang on about the state of South Africa as much as I do, it is a tragedy we are living through, a government that has betrayed the electorate and stolen all the money by looting and collapsing all the State-owned enterprises.  We are on the cusp of a complete blackout with load shedding around 8 hours a day.  It was therefore politically correct to bitch about it and play The Damned’s ‘Wait For The Blackout, followed by Sex Pistols and 'EMI'.  If you substitute ANC for EMI you get the picture.  From there it was time for some upliftment and that came in the form of Van Halen with 'Dreams', The Gaslight anthem with 'Stay Lucky', and Sixx A.M. with ‘High On The Music’.  We will get through this and the music helps.

The downhill run included some grungy stuff from Audioslave, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains.  It was post-Layne Staley Alice in Chains I might add, William Duvall is doing a great job in AIC.  Next up, classics from ACDC and Black Sabbath, and then some Halestorm with a cover of Sophie B. Hawkins’s 'Damn, I Wish I Was Your Lover'.  We took a listen to a lot of brilliant stuff that is new to me, St Aurora out of Finland, Girish and the Chronicles out of India, and Risingfall out of Japan.  Thanks to the wifi situation with a lot of the cell towers in the country rendered useless because the batteries have been stolen, I lost a lot of listeners, apologies to all who were frustrated with the signal dropping.  The end of the show turned into a beautiful Metal Festival featuring, Sword, Motörhead, Pantera, Bewitcher, and Arch Enemy.  We ended off with Claymorean, a metal band out of Lazarevac, a small mining town in Serbia. Claymorean are one of the best bands I have discovered this year.  I hope you enjoyed the episode, comments are welcome, watch out for the monthly newsletter and let me know if you want to be on the mailing list.  [email protected]

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E48

Episode 48 of Season 5 aired at 19h00 on 1 Dec 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio.  It was a tricky show because of the wifi signal jumping in and out.  The podcast is 100% so that is a small mercy I am thankful for.  We kicked off with a double header in the form of the first two tracks on W.A.S.P’s magnum opus The Crimson Idol.  From there is was a bit of Southern Rock from Whiskey Myers and then over to Ireland for some Therapy? and a track called ‘Unbeliever’ off the critically acclaimed Troublegum.  We stayed with the late ‘80s type guitar-driven rock with Badlands and a track called 'Dancing on the Edge'.  The Badlands debut album with Jake E. Lee, Ray Gillen, Eric Singer and Greg Chaisson was the first CD I ever bought and has a special place in my heart.

Black Sabbath and Thin Lizzy classics ‘Killing Yourself to Live’ and 'Some Day She’s Going to Hit Back’ were up next and then from these classics we got up to date with two albums released in the last month; Soilworks' Overgivenheten and Sakis Tolis’s Among the Fires of Hell.  Mötley Crüe’s track ‘Motherfucker of the Year' off Saints of Los Angeles elicited some nominations from the listeners, so I will collect a few more and we can discuss that another time.  The Offspring and Blink 182 hit the spot for the ‘90’s kids.

We spent a lot of time talking Metallica, they dropped the first track off the new album 72 Seasons this week and the 2023/24 Tour is kicking off soon.  They are doing two gigs per city with different opening acts and different sets each night.  I played Pantera, Five Finger Death Punch and Mammoth WVH all of who will be part of the M72 Tour.  To end off we checked out the ladies, Taylor Momsen and Lzzy Hale, and said farewell and RIP to Christine Mc Vie of Fleetwood Mac who passed away this week.  We listened to her play and sing ‘Oh Daddy’ off the multi-million-selling Rumours album.  SA bands were a bit thin on the ground tonight but we squoze in The Uninvited and The Burning before saying cheers and playing out with KISS and their anthem ‘ Let me Go Rock ‘n’ Roll.  Thanks for listening, much appreciated.  Cheers until next time.

Artists featured:  W.A.S.P, Whiskey Myers, Therapy? Badlands, KilliT, Warrant, Black Sabbath, Thin Lizzy, Soilwork, Sakis Tolis, Whitesnake, Mötley Crüe, The Offspring, Blink 182, Candlemass, Burning Witches, Joe Bonamassa, Free, rave, Pantera, Five Finger Death Punch, Mammoth WVH, Matthew Good Band, Godsmack, Motor Sister, Dead City Ruins, The Pretty Reckless, Halestorm, Fleetwood Mac, Kid Rock, Van Halen, Parkway Drive, Metallica, The Uninvited, the Burning, Iron Maiden, KISS.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E47

Episode 47 of season 5 aired at 19h00 on 254 Nov 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio.  I was worried the wifi wouldn’t hold up with the load-shedding, but we made it.  The show kicked off with an old TSORR favourite called 'Tres Borrachos' by Left Lane Cruiser.  From there we took a listen to the perennial rock classic that is ‘Hair of the Dog.  Nevada Beach were up next with a track called ‘Hollywood.  Hank Decken is the main man in Nevada Beach, on guitar and vocals.  We will be taking a closer look at Hank in weeks to come because there are a lot of unsung heroes in the rock ‘n’ roll business and I reckon Hank may be one of them.  We checked out two blues giants, Rory Gallagher and Philip Sayce, but listened to less bluesy tracks for a change.  Philip may have been a bit mellow for the early stages of the show so we ramped up a gear with Black Spiders and ‘KISS  Tried to Kill Me’.  Going back to Philip Sayce for a second, make sure you check out the solo at the end, it proves my theory that the songs are just vehicles for solos like this.

We changed pace with Black Spiders and a track called ‘KISS tried to kill Me’ off their critically acclaimed (by me) album Sons of the North.  The new Soilwork is a really good album and we listened to ‘Death, I Hear You Calling’.  You may be aware I am a huge fan of Matthew Good Bands' early work so we took a listen to ‘Carmelina’ off the Audio of Being album.  Brian Fallon’s ‘My Name Is the Night’ kept things tidy and then we floored it with In Flames and Parkway Drive.

From there we moved to an all-time South African classic by No Friends of Harry, you guessed it the one and only ‘Competition Rules'.  Wilko Johnson passed away yesterday, as a RIP we played 'Going Back Home' the title track of the album he did with Roger Daltrey back in 2014.  Wilko was a founder member of Dr. Feelgood with vocalist Lee Brilleaux.  Dr. Feelgood were often cited as a big influence by the UK Punk era bands such as The Jam and The Clash, so we checked out both with ‘Art School’ and ‘Drug-Stabbing Time’.  Then it was back to the stuff like The White Stripes and The Bottle Rockets.  The Bottle Rockets track 'Radar Gun' sent me off on a little tirade about the police in South Africa.  We went back to South Africa for a brand new track from the uber-talented Mark Haze and then we checked out some more Diverted Disorder.  The boys from the Vaal are doing good things, the album launch is this weekend.  From Diverted Disorder we heard The Cars, I shit you not, The Cars on TSORR!.  Why?  because it’s a great song, and that is why.  I totally ran out of time, we squeezed in (or is it squoze :-))? Boston, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, and a brand new track from Disturbed.   We finished off with an eight min plus live epic from Black Label Society called 'Stillborn'.  Thanks for listening, comments welcome, catch TSORR on the website or Facebook page.
