  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S4E37

Episode 36 kicked off on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 15 Sept 2022.  We are into the last 15% of Quarter 3 and then that is 2022 in its P.  Amazing, time really does fly. We kicked off the show with 'The Longest Day' by Iron Maiden.  At over seven minutes it was a nice way to give everyone a chance to settle in.  From there we went to Mötley Crüe for a bit of ‘Power To The Music’, and that’s what TSORR is all about.  That track features John Corabi on vocals, John has just released his biography so I will let yo know how that is once I finish it.  From there we had something from Lita Ford off her album titled Living Like a Runaway.  Then it was back to the classics with my favorite band Judas Priest and a track called 'Desert Plains'.  From Priest, we went to a band out of Arizona called Icon with a track called 'World War'.  Hopefully, that won’t happen.

We checked the title track off Surfing With The Alien, what a classic, the album cost $ 13 000 to make and sold a million copies.  I am sure Joe Satriani is still very happy about that.  And then an hour in everything went to shit.  We are getting load shedding in South Africa, three to four times every 24 hours and it is wreaking havoc with everything including Rebel Rock Radio and The Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Forgive the rant I had, we are really struggling here.  Once comms were eventually restored,  I focused on good times music like Metal Church's 'Date With Poverty', Motor Sister with  'A Hole', Nine Inch Nails with 'The Wretched’ and Megadeth’s ‘Dogs of Chernobyl’.  All pretty much aimed at the government that has stolen all the money and destroyed all the infrastructure.

There is so much good music out at the moment, the New Ozzy Osbourne was released last week and we took a listen to a track called 'One of Those Days' which features Eric Clapton.  I reckon Eric has come out tops here, of all the megastar guitarists featured on the album he just gets it perfect.  Another new album I have been playing a lot of is Burning Black by NWOBHM pioneers Desolation Angels featuring Clive Pearson on bass.  Clive was in local SA metal band Lynx back in the early '80s.  With 50 minutes to go, it was time to forget about the ANC abortion and let the music take over. Steel Panther with 'Gold Digging Whore' bought some levity to the show and seeing as we were down there Buckcherry with 'Ridin’' and Sound Garden with 'Big Dumb Sex' kept the show completely NSFW.   We needed to check out some SA music and paid our respects to Dennis East who passed away this week.  Dennis and Mike Pilot gave us Stingray and the wonderful ‘Better The Devil You Know’.   From there we had  ‘Baby Murdered Me' from Springbok Nude Girls featuring one of Theo Crous’s best solos ever, and there have been a few,  in my opinion.     We ended off with Parkway Drive and the title track off their new album released last week called 'Darker Still'.  Check out the second solo, it sounds great.

Artists featured:  Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Lita Ford, Judas Priest, Icon, Joe Satriani, Cirith Ungol, Humble Pie, Cream, Ozzy Osbourne, Scorpions, The Gaslight Anthem, Last In Line, Titus Andronicus, Trivium, Motor Sister, Nine Inch Nails, Metal Church, Hell Fire, Nazareth, Hole, Kid Rock, Megadeth, Cradle of Filth, Desolation Angels, Saxon, Steel Panther, ACDC, Buckcherry, Soundgarden, Stingray. Springbok Nude Girls, The Black Cat Bones, Blink 182, Fall Out Boy, Parkway Drive.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E36

Episode 36 kicked off with Journey and 'Anyway You Want It', live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 8 Sep 2022.  In quick succession, we heard from Mammoth WVH, Edguy and Blackfoot.  If any of you caught the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Show you will probably have been suitably impressed with Mammoth WVH’s Wolfgang Van Halen, the kids got daddy’s chops that is for sure.  From there we went all military with 'Gods of War' from Bruce Dickinson and 'Military Man' from Gary Moore.

While we were on air the news came through that the Queen had died so that led to ZZ Top with 'Have You Heard'?  And Status Quo with 'Mystery Song' and then into Tom Petty with a track called ‘Flirting With Time’ which is what we are all doing.  Tom Morello’s cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Blind Willie McTell went down really well, definitely a show highlight there.  We also checked out a band I discovered about 14 years ago and I don’t think I have played on TSORR, a band called Biomechanical.  The new stuff came from Alter Bridge and Ozzy Osbourne.  The next bit was great, it was all based around a couple of tracks from the Netflix documentary Trainwreck, Woodstock 99.  You need to see it, we took a listen to Limp Bizkit with 'Break Stuff’, Korn with ‘Blind’ and Kid Rock with ‘Batwitadaba’.  There was some good music at the turn of the century that’s for sure.

From there we cracked a bit of UK Punk with Stiff Little Fingers covering The Specials classic  ‘Doesn’t Make it Alright', some Steve Jones off the Fire & Gasoline album and a cover of Bob Marley’s 'Redemption Song' courtesy of Joe Strummer.  We went heavy with the title track off the brand new Megadeth album called The Sick, The Dying, and the Dead and then brand new from Parkway Drive and a track called ‘The Greatest Fear’.  SA music from The Black Cat Bones and Asylum Kids took us to a lekker messy ending with Five Finger Death Punch, Arch Enemy, and the find of the year, a band called The Halo Effect,  We took a listen to the opening track 'Shadowminds'.  And that ladies and gentlemen was that for season 5 episode 36.  Please share the podcasts with anyone who may be interested.  Thanks for listening \m/

Artists featured:  Journey, Mammoth WVH, Edguy, Blackfoot, Bruce Dickinson, Gary Moore, Q5, Slaughter, Sons of Liberty, The Dead Daisies, ZZ Top, Tom Morello & The Nightwatchmen, Status Quo, Tom petty, Biomechanical, Kiss, Ryan Adams, Dio, Alter Bridge, Ozzy Osbourne, (feat Zakk Wylde), Theory of a Deadman Mick Jagger, Limp Bizkit, Korn, Kid Rock, Stiff Little Fingers, Steve Jones, Joe Strummer, Nazareth, Megadeth, Parkway Drive, Asylum Kids, The Black Cat Bones, The L.A. • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E35

Episode 35 aired on 1 Sept 2022, on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00.  For once there were no technical problems on startup, everything connected and everything worked.  First up we had Krokus with their classic track Long Stick Goes Boom, off 1982’s One Vice at a Time.  Next up Biters with a track called ‘1975’ and then a quick track from Herman Frank before we shifted direction with some Faith No More.  From there we checked out ‘Baptised in Muddy Water from Ayron Jones and a track off the Ronnie James Dio Tribute tiled This is Your Life.

We spend a bit of time in the ‘Qs', not home affairs, the letter 'Q', with Q5 and Queensrÿche and 'Steel The Light' and ‘Jet City Woman respectively.  Seether made a welcome return with ‘Fake It' and Flatfoot 56 made their debut on TSORR.  The show moved into party mode with Rob Zombie and Living Dead Girl’ (who you can meet behind the counter at any Municipal Traffic Department near you).  Buckcherry and ‘Let’s Party’ off All Night Long, kept the throttle open.  We did the usual mix, slammed in some metal with Machine Head, ‘No Gods, No Masters’ and Killswitch Engage then into the UK punky stuff, The Boomtown Rats, The Jam, and Stiff Little Fingers.  The new stuff came from Five Finger Death Punch, The Halo effect, Slipknot, and Soulfly.

We checked out Cape Town-based Infanteria who featured a few months ago with a nearly 8 min masterpiece called 'Swansong' off their 2022 release Patriarch.  Then another brand new album from UK-based NWOBHM stalwarts Desolation Angels who have South African metal merchant Clive Pearson with them on bass.  We didn't manage to play the new Parkway Drive because there just isn't enough time, that tells you something about the amount of good new metal being released at the moment, "didn't have time for Parkway Drive", jesus.

We hit the local stuff with Jasper Dan and Black Bone Nation and then moved to a special level with ‘Warm Machine’ from Bush, you had to be there moving through the night at 3 am in Black Adder II to understand the power of that track.  Good times, really good times.  Anyway, the show had to die so we ended off with US punk from Green Day and then 'Helena' the classic track from MCR.   We went out heavy with The Halo Effect featuring Jesper  Strömblad ex In-Flames, Slipknot's new track 'The Chapeltown Rag', and Soulfly with 'Ancestors'.  Check it out, and spread the TSORR podcast far and wide please.

Artists featured:  Krokus, Biters, Herman Frank, Faith No More, Ayron Jones, Brian Tichy + Oni Logan + Rowan Robertson +  Jimmy Bain, Q5, Queensrÿche, Seether, Flatfoot 56, Rob Zombie, Rob Zombie, Buckcherry, Nashville Pussy, Michael Monroe, Machine Head, Killswitch Engage, Thin Lizzy, Billy Idol, The Boomtown rats, The Jam, Stiff Little Fingers, The Fismits, Megadeth, Five Finger Death Punch, Infanteria, Desolation Angels, Texas Hippie Coalition, Pantera, The L.A. • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E34

Episode 34 of Season 5 kicked off on 25 August 2022 at 7 pm on Rebel Rock Radio.  ACDC got us out the blocks with a track off Power Age called ‘Gone Shooting, We stayed in that style of rock and checked out The LA Maybe, a band out of the Carolinas, and an awesome track called 'Sucker Punch'.  In recognition of the fact that the world is pretty fucked at the moment we took a listen to ex-Hanoi Rocks and glam icon Michael Monroe with a track called ‘Junk Planet’.  Then we got heavy with Burn The Priest, the band that were Lamb of God before they became Lamb of God and a Melvins cover called 'Honey Bucket'.  Then we followed on from last week with another track off Bring Me The Horizon’s incredibly good album Sempiternal.  One of the highlights of this show was an awesome track by SA band Fear of Falling, this was a new single they released called ‘All My Time’.  SA music is world-class, always has been always will be.

We took in some Metallica off Kill ‘Em All and then changed the tone with The Offspring and a track called 'Self Esteem'.  Noodles on guitar got some love for his guitar sound.  Ibanez and Pitbull Amps are apparently the secrets.  25 August is famous for being the birthday of two of the greatest rock stars the world has ever known, two guys who had a huge influence on me personally as a kid discovering this awesome music.  I am talking about Gene Simmons and Rob Halford, to celebrate their birthdays, 73 and 71 respectively we took a listen to Gene with 'God of Thunder' off kiss Alive II and Rob with 'Victim of Changes' off Unleashed in the East.  Those two albums got played to death when I was growing up and I used Kid Rocks' anthemic 'Still Something' off his latest album Bad Reputation to hammer home the point that in the 70s and 80s music rock music was special.

From there it was Tom Petty followed by Bruce Springsteen with a lovely sentiment in his track “Further On (Up The Road) off The Rising.  God remember that hey?, 9-11, seems like a lifetime ago and it took the Boss to put it all in perspective as only he can. The show went heavy again with a new band called The Halo Effect, made up of ex-members of In Flames and Mikael Stanne from Dark Tranquility, it's well worth a listen, the album is called Days of the Lost.  There was no way we were going anywhere without taking another track off the stupendous new Arch Enemy album, Deceivers, the track we heard was ‘Spreading Black Wings’, from there is was My Chemical Romance and Oasis time and a bit of Billy idol thrown in for good measure.

The end of the show was a bit self-indulgent and took us back to some good jols in Cape Town, the scene was set with Kobus!, The Uninvited with 'The Poultry Christ' and Fokofpolisiekar with some Neil Young thrown in.   Kobus! with 'Die Volk Van Main' is a very special song, Theo Crous and Francois Blom got it right here.  The only huge disappointment with all this was that after Neil Young I explained how we used to use Tom Waits to clear the Whammy Bar in Cape Town and then I said cheers and goodnight and I assume that I didn't hit the mic button so we have a 60 min silence and no Cheerio until Tom Waits takes us out with 'Mr Siegal.  Sorry about that.

Artists featured:  ACDC, The L.A. Maybe, U.D.O., Michael Monroe, Warrant, Adrenaline Mob, Burn the Priest, Bring Me the Horizon, Fear of Falling, W.A.S.P., Metallica, The Offspring, Great White, Baton Rouge, Kiss, Judas Priest, Kid Rock, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Bruce Springsteen, Jasper Dan, The Halo Effect, Texas Hippie Coalition, Arch Enemy, My Chemical Romance, Oasis, The Professionals, Billy Idol, Stiff Little Fingers, The Distillers, Kobus!, The Uninvited, Fokofpolisiekar, Neil Young, Tom Waits

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E33

Episode 33 of season 5 aired finally at 19h18 on Rebel Rock Radio.  Same as last week I could not connect to the server but this time I found some gremlins in the system and was able to sort it out.  We kicked off with Guns ‘n’ Roses, with Accept and Herman Frank in hot pursuit.  Both those tracks featured Herman because back in 1984 when Restless and Wild was released he was on guitar with Wolf Hoffman.  Pearl Jam and Soundgarden signaled the end of the metal for the next 10 minutes.  From there we went all over the place, leaving the grunge in Seattle we moved to Ireland for The Boomtown Rats, London for Joe Jackson, then down under for some ACDC and a track called 'Giving the Dog a Bone' off Back in Black.  Mutt Lange produced both the ACDC and the Boomtown Rats' The Fine Art of Surfacing.

We had new stuff from Hell Fire and a track called 'Tortuga Nights' off the new album called Reckoning.  Also new was a track called 'Yen' off the new Slipknot, which is being released one track at a time in the same way as Arch Enemy and Megadeth were.  Speaking of both of those we checked them out as well.  It was cool to toast the late great Taylor Hawkins and check out a track called ‘Rudy’ off his EP Kota.  It's got so many hooks it reminds me of Rabbitt.  We went mellow with Dire Straits and a track called 'Lions' off the Live at the BBC album and then we went heavy again with a track called ‘Exiled From Earth’ off the finally released album called 'Deceivers'.  Arch Enemy is my current favorite metal band, Michael Amott and Alissa White-Gluz are killing it.

By the end of the show, we had gone from Del Amitri to Parkway Drive and Nickelback to Soulfly.  The UK Punk slot was great, and The Stranglers with Duchess really hit the spot.  The Rodneys were lining up, god forbid.  It was also great to hear Stiff Little Fingers with 'Nobody's' Hero and Simon McBride who is now in Deep Purple in place of Steve Morse made his TSORR debut with a rack called 'High Stakes'.  We finished up with Rage Against the Machines cover of Devo’s track ‘Beautiful World, Zack De La Roche literally oozes resentment at the end, don’t be like Zack kids.   All in all, it was a pretty mixed-up affair, in a good way.

Artists featured:  Guns ‘n’ Roses, Accept, Herman Frank, Newsted, Hell Fire, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, The Boomtown Rats, Joe Jackson, ACDC, Santana, Dave Hause, John Mellencamp, Rush, All them Witches, Megadeth, Slipknot, Taylor Hawkins, Dirty Honey, Simon McBride, Dire Straits, Arch Enemy, Bring Me The Horizon, Nickelback, Hinder, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, The Clash, Mr Big, The Answer, We Are Harlot, Sixx A.M., Del Amitri, Parkway Drive, Soulfly, Rage Against The Machine

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E32

Episode 32 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 11 August 2022.  Actually, that isn’t quite true it eventually went out at 19h10 due to the all too familiar computer problems that plague internet radio.  I am sure by 2025 all these stations will be a lot more reliable.  We started off with Volbeat and ‘Step Into Light’, then changed direction and decided to go ‘Into the Pit’ with Halford instead.  That track came off his Live Insurrection album.  From there we had a flurry of Aussie Rock in the form of James Reynes performing ‘Boys Light Up, off the One Night in Melbourne live album, it's a rock classic featuring hummers, and not the type Arnold drives.  The rest of the flurry came from Airbourne and Rose Tattoo.  Around about this time the server decided that that was enough TSORR for one night and I was left with a ton of disappointed listeners and nothing to do except finish the show for the podcast.

The live show is such a big part of TSORR because the audience gives the energy and the show is way more chirpy when it's live.  Anyway, it was not to be.  We continued with some excellent brand-new metal.  ‘Saxons and Vikings’ from Amon Amarth.  It featured Saxons Biff Byford doing the Saxon part of the duet.  It’s a very, very cool track, one of my best for the year.   We then some Soulfly with a track called ‘Superstition’ off the brand new album called Totem.  There was bit of Dio and Megadeth in the middle of it all and then we took a listen to a track called ‘Asshole’ by Helloween.  It’s a pretty scathing attack on whoever it was aimed at and to be honest at that particular moment I had a long list of suitable candidates.

I dedicated Gov’t Mule's beautiful track ‘Soulshine to a few of my friends having a really tough time at the moment and then followed up with U2’s amazing track 'Walk On' for everyone who just needs a bit of encouragement in these troubled times.  It was time to liven things up with some US punky stuff:  Blink 182, Wheatus, and Bloodhound Gang did the honours with Anthem, Teenage Dirtbag, and The Ballad of Chasey Lain respectively.  The ladies were represented by The Pretty Reckless and the awesome Taylor Momsen, then we had In This Moment and the power of Maria Brink.  While we were there we turned the mic over to Angela Gossow and a track called 'The Day You Died' off Rise of the Tyrant.  Michal Amott is just phenomenal on this, Rise of The Tyrant was released in 2007, and still has brother Christopher Amott before he finally left to pursue other interests in 2012.  The show stayed heavy because from there we went to Slayer and finally switched the pace a bit with two South African tracks, ‘Born on Death Row’ by The Uninvited, and ‘Swords’ a track off the brand new album from The Black Cat Bones.   We ended the evening in good US rock style thanks to John Mellencamp and TSORR's beloved Tom Petty.  The final track is really disturbing, 'Slow Motion' by Third Eye Blind should be a movie.

Artists featured:  Volbeat, Halford, Marilyn Manson, James Reyne, Airbourne, Rose Tattoo, Don Babylon, Megadeth, Static-X, Helloween, Theory of a Deadman, Emigrate, Dio, Amon Amarth, Soulfly, The Cult, Stone Gossard, John Frusciante, Children of Bodom, Gov’t Mule, U2, Blink 182, Wheatus, Bloodhound Gang, ACDC, Ratt, Rush, The Pretty Reckless, In This Moment, Arch Enemy, Slayer, The Uninvited, The Black Cat Bones, John Mellencamp, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, Third Eye Blind.

  • Rock Review: Rush

This was one of the most enjoyable Rock Reviews I have done.  It was made in a hurry due to some work pressure and it is all the better for it.  You could say I did Rush in a rush.  The beauty of Rock Review is that it often leads to a bit of an obsession with the band for a while, in this case, it worked and I am seriously Rush befok at the moment.  Check it out.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E31

Episode 31 of Season 5 went out live on Rebel Rock radio on 4 August 2022.  This show is as unprepared as it gets, let's see what happens.  We kicked off with Bad Company and ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Fantasy, then into Dave Hause off one of my favourite albums of all time titled 'Bury Me In Philly'.  The track we played was called ‘The Flinch’.  From there we sped it up a bit with ‘Speed Demon’ from Keel, by now I was hating what I had in the playlist and desperately looking for a way out.  By request, we took in some of Australia's finest in the form of James Reyne and Cold Chisel with ‘Fall of Rome’ and ‘When the War is Over’ respectively.  The Cold Chisel track should cause some piloerection, the first two verses sung by guitarist Ian Moss and then the sheer power of Jimmy Barnes taking over from verse three.  I love the way Barnsey does this, standing back and letting someone else have a go just increases the magnificence of his voice.  It’s the contrast that does it, and then of course Don Walker on piano.

This week's Rock Review featured Rush and the last track 'The Wreckers' cut off violently due to the time slot allocated so to make amends and also by request we listened to it in its awesome entirety.  Things by now were picking up with some very special people tuned in.  We checked out a band called Ignite and another called Windowpane, two relatively unknown bands making some awesome music.  Next, we popped over to Germany for some Rammstein and some Accept.  We checked some new stuff from Alter Bridge off their forthcoming album Pawns and Kings, the track was called 'Silver Tongue' and we also listened to 'Times Like These' off the brand new Five Finger Death Punch release Afterlife.  A couple of Alices’ in the form of Alice in Chains and Alice Cooper were followed by classic 80’s metal from Van Halen and ACDC.

We wound it down with four South African bands, starting with a request for Kobus! with Kultuurfeestent and then Jack Hammer, The Black Cat Bones, and L.A. Cobra. The Bones in particular sounded amazing with their cover of Bob Dylan's ‘I Shall be Released.  We stayed mellow and wound down this very random show with some Black Stone Cherry off the Kentucky album and Kid Rock with ‘Don’t Quit’ off his latest album released earlier this year titled Bad Reputation.

Artists featured:  Bad Company, Dave Hause, Desperado, Keel, Danko Jones, James Reyne, Cold Chisel, Destruction, Thundermother, The Gaslight Anthem, Led Zeppelin, Rush, Rory Gallagher, Ignite, Windowpane, Rammstein, Accept, Alter Bridge, Five Finger Death Punch, Audioslave, Alice in Chains, Alice Cooper, Virgin Steele, ACDC, Van Halen, Candlebox, Kiss, David Bowie, Kobus!, Jack Hammer, The Black Cat Bones, L.A. Cobra, Bruce Dickinson, Black Stone Cherry, Kid Rock

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E30

Season 5 Episode 30 went out live on Rebel Rock Radio on 28 July 2022.  Once again showcasing the more sophisticated start to the show we kicked off with ZZ Top off a newly released album called RAW.  This was the soundtrack to their Sam Dunn (Of a Headbangers Journey fame)produced 2019 Netflix rockumentary That ‘lil old band from Texas’.  I haven’t seen it but will do so soon. It’s released as a tribute to Dusty Hill who sounds awesome on this track.  Next up is a cool bit of Whitesnake off Love Hunter released back in 1979.  We checked out some Black Sabbath with a track called 'Peace of Mind' and then Aerosmith with Steven Tyler singing about his favourite colour.  ‘Tired Wings’ by The Four Horseman was a breath of fresh air and I briefly told the tragic story of that band.  The track came off the Rick Rubin produced album called Nobody Said it Was Easy, ain’t that the truth?

Queensrÿche with ‘Child of Fire’ sounded absolutely better than ever and it was cool to hear something of Iron Maiden's debut album again.  Paul Di Anno on vocals and a track called ‘Strange World’.  The thing I love about doing these live shows is you can really create something out of nothing, as it wore on things sounded better and better.  Infanteria, a metal band out of Cape Town hit us hard with 'Raging Bastards' off their new album Patriarch.  The next track ‘Battering Ram’ by Saxon may well be the best track they have ever done, sheer power, metal at its best.  We caught some Pat Travers and his track ‘Snortin’ Whisky’, I have changed my message about this track, and new advice is offered now that I have had pause to reflect.  Next up, the wonderful Neal Young and his uber cool track 'Revolution Blues', check out that lyric.

We checked out 3Teeth, which is very Mansonesque so we checked out Marilyn Manson, the Double MM himself off The Born Villain album.  Rory Gallagher made an appearance with ‘Bad Penny’ and then it was time for ACDC, making a rare appearance on TSORR with 'Evil Walks’ lol.  As always, we got a bit punky with Blink 182 and The Stranglers and threw in The Polices ‘So Lonely’ lest we forget how good the ’77 to ’79 period really was.  Then we had a flurry of Ss in the form of Seether, Sixx A.M., and Slipknot.  "Time are few boys" as one of my teachers used to say,  so we ended up with a bit of Volbeat and checked out with Judas Priest and an iconic moment in Rock when My Chemical Romance played out with 'Famous Last Words' and announced that the Black Parade was dead, we are still all crying.

Artists featured:  ZZ Top, Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Black Sabbath. Ivan Ivankovic, The Four Horsemen, Queensrÿche, Iron Maiden, Infanteria, Saxon, Nevada Beach, Pat Travers Band, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Megadeth, Running Wild, Ozzy Osbourne, 3Teeth, Marilyn Manson, Rory Gallagher, ACDC, Dave Hause, Theory of a Deadman, Disturbed, Avenged Sevenfold, Keel, Blink 182, The Police, The Stranglers, Seether, Sixx A.M. Slipknot, My Chemical Romance.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E29

Episode 29 of Season 5 kicked off live on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 21 July 2022.  I reckon this was one of the coolest starts ever and featured a little clip of Tom Petty telling the audience in Inglewood to clear the aisles.   The original idea to have a mellow start was blown to Smithereens by Therapy with ‘Trigger Inside’ followed by Scorpions and UFO with ‘Blackout’ and Lights Out’ respectively.  Punches were being swung at the government and all was good.  We took a listen to Trivium, Matt Heafy’s band and they have really grown on me.   This week is based on last week's aborted show but with some super-excellent enhancements.  I am in a far better mood.

We checked out Tindrum a band that I found on the Phil Wright Tapes,  in a continuation of what I call tracks from Tracks From The Grave,  we checked out a track called Street Fighter by Tindrum.  From there we had Welcome to the Circus, brand new from Five Finger Death Punch.  This time last week I was losing my rhythm, resetting streams, and generally pissing the listeners off so it was great to be able to do this show justice.  Some of it has changed, mainly the sentiment (happy, grateful) but most of it stayed the same.  Blue Öyster Cult hit the spot with a track called ‘Fight’, which we must.  We then entered the ‘Belly Of The Best’ with Sixx A.M., this bit got a bit personal with the current state of things in SA.  I experienced an armed robbery last week, 9 guys moved into our factory and took us prisoner, lie on the floor type shit you see in the movies.  We managed to outwit them and set off the alarm but it could have ended very badly.  The next two songs, Bastards by Machine Head and (Don’t let Em) Grind Ya Down by Motörhead summed up the need to fight this shit.  We cannot let the bad guys win.  Things balanced out with Rival Sons and the stoic sentiments of Good Things and we let the power of great rock music do its work, Bad Company, and Foreigner were good medicine.

We had the evolution of female vocals with Sheryl Crow, Lzzy Hale, and Alisa White-Gluz.  We sorted out the UK Punk with Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols and The Stranglers, and US Punk with Fall Out Boy and The Distillers.   Brody Dale is such an iconic rock chick, she should do more albums.  We ended the show with a lot of SA music and started with Springbok Nude Girls, then Mark Haze, then Nibs Van Der Spuy.  People wanted more so we had Valiant Swart and we went out with Johnathan Martin’s amazing track ’I Wish You Well'.

The highlight of the show for me was the shout-out to Danny De Wet and his awesome book Sex, Drums and Rock n Roll……In Africa.  I spent time with Danny last weekend and he managed to get my book into the hands of Lucien Windrich who took TSORR on the plane with him back to the UK after a very successful Johnny Clegg tribute gig.  We took a listen to Wonderboom with a cover of eVoids 'Shadows', two bands Danny was an integral part of.

Artists featured: Therapy?, Scorpions, UFO, Trivium, Black Label Society, Warrant, Tindrum, Smith/Kotzen, Five Finger Death Punch, Blue Oyster Cult, Sixx A.M., Machine Head, Motörhead, Rival Sons, Saxon, Wonderboom, Arapaho, Bad Company, Foreigner, Slade, Mott The Hoople, Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, Sheryl Crow, Halestorm, Arch Enemy, Upon A Burning Body, Megadeth, Volbeat, Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Fall Out Boy, The Distillers, Springbok Nude Girls, Mark Haze, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Valiant Swart, Johnathan Martin
