  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E28

Episode 28 of Season 5 kicked off live on Rebel Rock Radio at 7 pm on 14 July 2022.  I reckon this was one of the coolest starts ever and featured a little clip of Tom Petty telling the audience in Inglewood to clear the aisles.   The original idea to have a mellow start was blown to Smithereens by Therapy? with ‘Trigger Inside’ followed by Scorpions and UFO with ‘Blackout’ and Lights Out’ respectively.  Punches were being swung at the government and all was good.  We took a listen to Trivium, Matt Heafy’s band,  and they have really grown on me.  We were going great guns with plenty of listeners and things were flowing nicely and then the streams cut out and no matter what I did I could not re-establish them.  To save this podcast I had to abort the live show which was really annoying given the fact that I had some shit I wanted to say.  It got said anyway but without the help and feedback of a live audience.

We checked out Tindrum a band that I found on the Phil Wright Tapes, and a track called 'Street Fighter' which we took a listen to.  From there we had 'Welcome to the Circus', brand new from Five Finger Death Punch.  By now I was losing my rhythm, resetting streams, and generally disappointing the listeners.  I pulled the plug and settled on making sure the podcast worked.  Some Queensrÿche and Blue Öyster Cult hit the spot and then we entered the ‘Belly Of The Best’ with Sixx A.M., this bit got a bit personal with the current state of things in SA.  I experienced an armed robbery this week, 9 guys moved into our factory and took us hostage, all that lie on the floor type shit you see in the movies.  It all worked out OK, I managed to outwit them and set off the alarm but it could have ended badly.  The next two songs, 'Bastards' by Machine Head and '(Don’t let Em) Grind Ya Down' by Motörhead summed up the need to fight this shit.  We cannot let the bad guys win.  Things balanced out with Rival Sons and the stoic sentiments of 'Good Things' and we let the power of great rock music do its work, Bad Company, and Foreigner was good medicine.

We sorted out the UK Punk with Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols and The Stranglers, US Punk with Fall Out Boy and The Distillers, Brody Dale is such an awesome rock chick, she should do more albums.  We ended the show with a lot of SA music starting with Springbok Nude Girls, then Mark Haze, then Nibs Van Der Spuy, then Valiant Swart and we went out with Johnathan Martin’s amazing track ’I wish You Well'.  This was the first time since TSORR started on Rebel Rock Radio that there wasn’t a show in the Thursday 7 to 10 slot, I found it most depressing to be honest.  Apologies to all of you who tuned in and sorry to have let you down.  I’d be happier if I knew how to sort it out.

Artists featured: Therapy?, Scorpions, UFO, Trivium, Black Label Society, Warrant, Tindrum, Five Finger Death Punch, Creed, Blue Öyster Cult, Queensrÿche, Sixx A.M., Saxon, Machine Head, Motörhead, Rival Sons, Bad Company, Foreigner, Slade, Mott The Hoople, Dire Straits, Jimi Hendrix, Sheryl Crow, Arch enemy, Upon A Burning Body, Megadeth, Volbeat, Stiff Little Fingers, Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, Fall Out Boy, The Distillers, Springbok Nude Girls, Mark Haze, Nibs Van Der Spuy, Valiant Swart, Johnathan Martin

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E27

Episode 27 of season 5 aired on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 7 July 2022.  The show kicked off with a live track from Volbeat called 'Maybellene I Hofteholder'.  It was a nice way to start actually and it sort of set the tone for a mellow (by TSORR standards) beginning.  From there we had a band called Austin Gold with the title track off their debut album Before Black Clouds.  Next up California Breed, that’s half of Black Country Communion, plus Ozzy Osbourne producer Andrew Watt.  After that, we smashed some of that Southern Rock action with Blackfoot and Rhino Bucket.  Rhino Bucket is out of California so while not strictly Southern Rock, you can hear the influences in the music.  The track we played was 'Going Down Tonight'.  We also had some of SA’s own Jasper Dan which is a band I really dig.

Danko Jones let off a bit of steam and offered up some good advice on what to do when people cross you.  We also said farewell and RIP to Manny Charlton, guitarist and founder member of the beloved 70’s juggernaut known by the name of Nazareth.  'Hair of the Dog' was a fitting tribute to a great guitarist and songwriter.  Manny was 80 so that’s pretty good for rock and roll, well played sir.  We listen to Queensrÿche and Rush, two giants of prog according to some, but I figure it's not prog because I really love it.  Carlos Santana had a collapse on stage this week and was rushed to hospital, he’s OK, a bit of dehydration (the dude is 74) so to wish him well (because he never misses TSORR lol) we played his version of 'Whole Lotta Love' feat. Chris Cornell.

Overall it was a fairly balanced show, we were light on Aussie and German stuff and only managed 4 SA tracks, one of which is my latest discovery, a band out of Cape Town called Infanteria, check them out they are great.  The classic '80s stuff came from Kiss, Dokken, and Dio, and Asking Alexandria, Testament, and Amon Amarth brought the metal to the party.   We ended super mellow with The Stranglers and 'Don't Bring Harry' and a beautiful track from Wonderboom called "Night Falls Like a Grand Piano'.   I managed to tone down the doom and gloom a bit although we are still on Stage 5 load shedding in South Africa and it really affects the number of listeners that catch the show. This in turn affects the energy of the whole thing., see if you notice.

Artists Featured:  Volbeat, Austin Gold, California Breed, Blackfoot, Rhino Bucket, Danko Jones, Nazareth, Jasper Dan, Queensrÿche, Rush, Dio, Forbidden, Santana feat. Chris Cornell, The Dead Daisies, Stone Sour, Testament, The Police, Pixies, Foo fighters, Mastodon, Infanteria, Kiss, Dokken, Bad Company, Deep Purple, Steve Morse, Joe Bonamassa, Fall out Boy, My Chemical Romance, Asking Alexandria, Amon Amarth, Warlock, Pretenders, The Stranglers, Wonderboom.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E26

Episode 26 marked the halfway through the year spot.  The show aired on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 30 June 2022.  I got a chance to adjust my pants and dance the good time dance with Clutch's 'The Mob Goes Wild’ by Clutch as the show opener.  Neil Fallon was in fantastic form on Blast Tyrant, my favorite Clutch album ever.  Then in quick succession, we had two tracks about mothers, ‘Run To Your Mama' by Gary Moore and 'Mothers Spinning In Her Grave' by Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains fame.  We took in some Seether and then mellowed out in a powerful way with Alter Bridge.  We heard a track called 'Life Must Go On',  and it must, no matter how fucked up the current situation is.  From there very mellow, probably too mellow actually, with Ryan Adams off an album called 1989 and a track called ‘Bad Blood’.

Things warmed up with Black Country Communion and Satan (the band not the dude),  and then we hit a bit of a Guns ‘n’ Roses theme with a cover of 'My Michelle' courtesy of L.A. Guns. Phil Lewis's very British accent and Tracii Guns's guitar tone added serious value to the track.  The new stuff came from Megadeth and Ozzy.  Megadeth, in particular, is fantastic, seriously amazing, if the rest of the album is like this track titled ‘We’ll Be Back’ then its album of the year already.  We checked out the new Ozzy, which is great, even though I blow hot and cold on it, I am warming to it.  Make your own mind up on this one. I love Jeff Becks contribution but I'm not a fan of Andrew Watt in the produccers chair.

I made up for a dearth of South African music over the last two weeks, starting with Richard Prior in his Pebbleman guise and a cover of the Warren Heynes track made famous by Joe Bonamassa called ‘If Heartaches Were Nickels’, nickles, not nipples lol,  Springbok Nude Girls, Mark Haze & 12th Avenue, Jack Hammer and a Cape Town metal band called Infanteria.  Infanteria is a seriously world-class thrash band in the mold of Slayer, Metallica, and Testament, thanks to Metal Malletjie Greg Scott for finding them.

From there it was the downhill run with some US Punk (Blink 182 and Fall Out Boy) and some UK Punk (The Clash and The Jam) and We ended heavy with Sepultura, Arch Enemy, and Destruction.   There was probably too much moaning about the state of the country, load shedding, and abomination that the ANC has become so apologies for that, to quote the Boss "Someday we'll look back on this and it will all seem funny".  Let's hope hey.

Artists featured:  Clutch, Gary Moore, Jerry Cantrell, Korn, Seether, Alter Bridge, Ryan Adams, Black Country Communion, Satan, Michael Schenker Group, L.A.Guns, Dangerous Toys, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Megadeth, Def Leppard, Black Spiders, Buckcherry, Ozzy Osbourne, Rose Tattoo, Trivium, Metal Church, Pebbleman, Springbok Nude Girls, Jack Hammer, Mark Haze & 12th Avenue, Infanteria, 182, Fall Out Boy, The Clash, The Jam, The Cult, White Zombie, Sepultura, Arch Enemy, Destruction.

PS, I now know why Ryan Adams was considered possibly too mellow, his1989 album is a cover album.  Taylor Swift recorded 1989 in 2014 which is the year of her birth, Ryan was born in 1974 and he has songs called 1974 so I guess that is all part of it.  He decided to cover the whole thing.  Taylor Swift hasn't featured on TSORR before, I am aware that there is a Taylor Swift but up until now that was as far as it went.  Don't stress we won't be hearing her album any time soon.

PPS, the TV show where "Chris died for your sins" was Weeds and it was the character Andy who made the shirts.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E25

Another fun episode of TSORR, this one went out on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 23 June 2022.  It was episode 25 so we are nearly halfway through Season 5 already.  Kicking off with Dee Snider and ‘Mask’, and then Lita Ford with ‘The Mask’ we symbolically said cheers to wearing masks in SA at last.  Or until the next pandemic in 2060 but I don’t think flu will be around by then anyway, or me for that matter.  Moving on.  We checked out Autograph with a very fresh sounding 2017 live version of ‘Turn Up The Radio’ and then got down to business with some Megadeth, Saxon, and Guns 'n' Roses.  The new Megadeth called The Sick, The Dying and the Dead is on pre-release but we took in a track off United Abominations called 'Washington is Next.  The G 'n' Roses track came off Chinese Democracy, just for a change.

To rebalance for a Guns 'n' Roses without Slash we played a track off his It's 5 'o Clock Somewhere album.   There was a call for some metal so I played Asking Alexandria which was met with Oom-ish howls which a stated with Metallica's 'The Thing That Should Not Be'.  More howls, so we got back to old-school metal in the form of ACDC and Rainbow.  The world has changed a lot.   Other than that we paid tribute to Clarens Clemons who died 11 years ago this week.  'Born to Run' did the honours there.  We heard the obligatory Tom Petty track and some Marilyn Manson with 'New Model No 15' off Mechanical Animals.  Rammstein hit us with 'Haifisch' which means shark in English and then we celebrated a historic victory in which the forces of good triumphed over the forces of evil at the CCMA, Slayer with 'Richard Hung Himself' marked that spot.

No SA music in this episode!!!  can't believe it, it just got too busy.  Next week I promise.  Other than that there were two good releases this week Machine Head with a track called 'Unhallowed' and In Flames with 'State of Slow Decay', heavy metal is alive and kicking ass.  We went out quietly with Judas Priest's beautiful ballad titled 'Never Forget' which reminds us that they will keep going until they no longer can and that they will never forget the support from the fans, it's a bitter-sweet reminder of the fragility of it all.  Tomm Waits closed the gate with 'Gun Street Girl' off raindogs.

Artists featured:  Dee Snider, Lita Ford, Kris Barras Band, Autograph, Bad Company, Megadeth, Praying Mantis, Rhino Bucket, Saxon, Dangerous Toys, Guns ‘n’ Roses, Asking alexander, Metallica, ACDC, Rainbow, Slash’s Snake Pit, Soil, Slayer, System of a Down, Soundgarden, Bush, The Jam, The Damned,  Marilyn Manson, Rammstein, Windowpane, Skid Row, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Cold Chisel, Uriah Heep, Motörhead, Machine Head, In Flames, Judas Priest, Tom Waits

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E24

Episode 24 of season 5 aired at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 16 June 2022.  It was workers' day and being a Thursday most people took the gap and the long weekend.  It was incumbent on TSORR to provide the soundtrack to the jol.  With that mission in mind, the show kicked off with the Thin Lizzy classic ‘Cowboy Song’.  From there it was time for some Clutch off the wonderful Blast Tyrant album and a track dedicated to the Gupta Brotherc called 'Subtle Hustle'.  From there we ended in a weird little bit where every song was about Moving On.  George Thorogood got it started with 'Move It On Over', then we had two different songs called 'Move On' first by Walter Trout and then followed by Paul Stanley.  Speaking of Paul Stanley it seems pretty certain that we are not going to see Kiss in SA.  Thanks, Covid ☹

It was time for some metal so we moved on to Queensrÿche and Accept.  The Accept track was called 'The Abyss' off Blood of Nations and featured an awesome little Wolf Hoffman bridge about 3 min in, check it out.  Next, we went political and dedicated a song by The New Black called ‘Send in the Clowns’ to the politicians.  The hair metal days were celebrated as they always are on the show, this time with Ratt and Poison, Warren DeMartini, and CC de Ville showing exactly what the fuss was about.

For the Metal, we had Slayer, Cradle of Filth, Testament, Megadeth, and Wolf.  Tom Petty, Kid Rock and Pride & Glory gave us a bit of laid back, what I like to call, heartland rock. Pride & Glory was Zakk Wylde's outfir after he left Ozzy but before Black Label Society.  The track 'Found a Friend' was dedicated to Athol and Margie who have been TSORR lifers since the show started in 2017.   We didn’t get any UK punk in this episode so that’s pretty rare, instead we took a lightning tour around the world ending up in South Africa via Germany, Canada, Japan, Australia, and France .   Oh, and of course, the new Kreator is out so we played a track called 'Crush the Titans'.  We ended heavy with Kreator, Slayer and Slipknot, albeit mellow Slipknot with a track called ‘Snuff’, with about 8 min left it made sense to go from Slipknot to Nickelback to Hinder, why the hell not it’s only Rock and Roll and we like it.  Cheers for now, catch you next episode.

    And Jaques got his drums.

Artists featured:    Thin Lizzy, Clutch, George Thorogood, Walter Trout, Paul Stanley, Queensrÿche, Accept, The New Black, Tesla, Ratt, Poison, Slash, Wolf, Joe Bonamassa, Megadeth, Marilyn Manson, Cradle of Filth, Testament, Audioslave, Stone Temple Pilots, Billy Talent, Blink 182, Kid Rock, Tom Petty. Pride & Glory, Scorpions, Rush, Gary Moore, Loudness, ACDC, Gojira, The Black Cat Bones, Fokofpolisiekar, Kreator, Slayer, Slipknot, Nickelback, Hinder.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E23

Episode 23 of season 5 aired on 9 June at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio. First up we had 1000 Homo DJs.  Basically, that is Al Jorgenson of Ministry fame with a few buddies, people like Jello Biafra.  From there we had a 'Poisoned heart' by Black Star Riders.  Classic rock from Def Leppard, Krokus, Journey, and Whitesnake off the Love Hunter album moved us along nicely.  Korn took us into the 2000s and we stayed there with 21st-century bands The Temperance Movement and a solo album by ex-Motörhead guitarist Phil Campbell.

Jaques called in to ask if there were any drums so we took a listen to Doro Pesch and Warlock with a track called 'Hellbound'.  We celebrated the Queen's platinum (70th) Jubilee with 'God Save the Queen', the track that cemented the Sex Pistol's reputation as foul-mouthed yobs.  Staying in 1977 we checked out The Clash with 'Hate and War' and UK Punk heavyweights The Stranglers with a track off 1978's Black and White called 5 Minutes.

The highlight for me was playing a song that is very special to me by a South African band called Count Ash.  Featuring guitar god Joe da Silva, Count Ash were resident at the Roxy Rhythm Bar in Melville in the early '90s.  I spent many Friday nights there in the company of fellow Sleaze Patrollers Marq Vas, Dave Lee Owen, and Stu Hollendrake.  Thanks to Vas who has the largest collection of SA music in the world (check out Mark Vas's South African Music Collectibles) I managed to get an MP3 copy of the track 'Holding On' which I rediscovered on my Phil Wright Tapes last week.  It was amazing to hear it again.  It made sense to keep those memorable days flowing with another track by The Diamond Dogs, they have been getting a lot of airplay lately thanks to Rebel Rock's Tinus Nel, who gave me some recordings that he helped fund many years ago.  I sort of lost control of the show for a while but we did chat briefly about Rodriguez, and Johnny Depp and we got to hear 'The Economic Theory of Jesus' by The Uninvited for the first time ever on TSORR.

Artists featured:  1000 Homo DJs, Black Star Riders, Def Leppard, Dangerous Toys, Whitesnake, Krokus, Journey, Metallica, Korn, Thunder, The Temperance Movement, Thin Lizzy, Phil Campbell, Warlock, W.A.S.P., Sex Pistols, The Stranglers, the Clash, Butchering The Beatles, Hollywood Vampires, Tom Petty, Bruce Springsteen, Rodriguez, Kid Rock, Children of Bodom, System of a Down, Sabaton, Stone Sour, Vixen, The Rolling Stones, Count Ash, The Diamond Dogs, The Uninvited, Johnathan Martin, Buckcherry, Skid Row, Slash’s Snakepit, Sixx AM, The Distillers, Ozzy Osbourne.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E22

Episode 22 nearly didn't happen, it became episode 23 for some reason.  It looks like the time travel theme that signals the start of every show moved me ahead a week. Fortunately, I was able to change all the S5E23s to the correct S5E22 before everything got uploaded and created an irreversible hole in time.  The show kicked off with The Doors and  'L.A. Woman' and it was like cool running water, Jim Morrison giving us a glimpse once again of what could have been if he was still around today.  From a chilled laid back nearly 8 minute intro, we smashed a little Volbeat action and moved through Phil X and The Drills, Skid Row, and something off the new Ghost album Impera.

We made a bit of a fuss about Johnny Depp and celebrated his vindication by the courts this week by playing his band Hollywood Vampires and a track called 'Who's Laughing Now'.  We washed that down with some Jeff Beck jamming with ZZ Top on 'Rough Boy'.  We had Classic Rock came from Black Sabbath, ACDC, and Led Zeppelin, prog type stuff from Threshold and Coheed & Cambria, and Metal from Sepultura, Death Angel, and Opeth.

The SA music was well represented by The Devil's Party Band, The Diamond Dogs, and Hellcats.  Tom Petty and John Mellencamp mellowed the show out a bit, I tried to revive it with some UK Punk, courtesy of The Stranglers and Stiff Little Fingers but ultimately the show moved back to a chilled ending with a fantastic love song about a guitar off the brand new Def Leppard album Diamond Star Halos.  Anyone who has played a guitar their whole life will fully understand the sentiment and the mini solos.  The show was dedicated to Athol's son Phoenix who turned 25 and celebrated by listening to The Story of Rock and Roll as one should.

Artists featured:  The Doors, Volbeat, Phil X and The Drills, Ghost, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Coverdale / Page, Zakk Wylde, Tesla, Threshold, Coheed & Cambria, Mötley Crüe, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Dangerous Toys, Hollywood Vampires, ZZ Top, The Rolling Stones, Suicidal Tendencies, Doom Squad, Opeth, Sepultura, Death Angel, Led Zeppelin, Soundgarden, The Diamond Dogs, Hellcats, The Devil’s Party Band, The Pretty Reckless, Lita Ford, L7, Seether, Tom Petty, John Mellencamp, The Stranglers, Stiff Little Fingers, Def Leppard, U2.

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E21

Episode 21 of Season 5 kicked off TSORR at 19h00 on Thursday 26 May 2022 with Chickenfoot's upbeat 'Oh Yeah'.  From there it was Kiss and The Answer out of Ireland with a track called 'Feel the Fear'.  This was one of the most enjoyable episodes I have ever done.  It felt a bit different but I am not sure why.  It had all the usual fare; Punk from The Stranglers and the Clash, classic metal from Iron Maiden and Metallica, Grunge from Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden.  With Soundgarden, we went 'Full On Kevin's Mom'.

The South African music bit was great thanks to Rebel Rocks' own Tinus Nel who had old recordings that I only had on cassette of The Diamond Dogs.  The Dogs were SA's finest live band back in the late '80s / early '90s and they would have been huge if they were in the US.  The energy from these recordings is palpable, We checked out a new track from The Black Cat Bones off the new album Book of Miriam which is being released slowly.  We also checked up Odyssey and Sacrifist.

My favorite bit was the last hour where we had some rocking heavy stuff from The Lazys and Billy F. Gibbons before having a mellow-ish Jethro Tull into Van Morrison, into Bowie bit.  Moving the show through to a seriously heavy ending took skill and worked like a charm, going via the weirdness of Electric Six and Beastie Boys and using the Kerry King solo as the bridge into Slayer with 'Americon' and then Arch Enemy with their new track 'Sunset Over Empire' and show closer 'Arrows In Words From The Sky' by Machine Head

Artists featured:  Chickenfoot, Kiss, The Answer, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Annihilator, Iron Maiden, Texas Hippie Coalition, Hell Yeah, Danko Jones, Buckcherry, Led Zeppelin, Creedance Clearwater Revival, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Dream Theatre, Edguy, The Stranglers, The Clash, Transvision Vamp, The Diamond Dogs, Odyssey, Sacrifist, Grave Digger, Metallica, The Lazys, Billy F. Gibbons, Asking Alexandria, Tyler Bryant, Jethro Tull, Van Morrison, David Bowie, Conil, John Mellencamp, Electric Six, Beastie Boys, Slayer, Arch Enemy, Machine Head

  • The Story of Rock and Roll: S5E20

Episode 20 of Season 5 aired on Rebel Rock Radio on Thursday 19 May at 19h00.  It was great to be back behind the mic after two hectic weeks in Clarens and then Cape Town.   The show kicked off with hair metal heavyweights Slaughter and a track called 'Shake This Place'.  That was the general intention from the start.  From there we checked out the two Mot's, Mötley Crüe and Mott the Hoople, with 'Angela' and 'One of the Boys' respectively.

We went to Australia with The Screaming Jets and James Reyne and then to Germany with Accept and a delightful love song called 'Bucket Full of Hate'.  The show had a great mix and even featured a track from prog heavyweights Dream Theatre.  We had metal from Satan with 'My Own God', as well as more from Cancer Bats off their latest release Psychic Jailbreak.  The South African stuff came from Jasper Dan, Prime Circle, and Durban's very own Roland Suttie with his latest Theo Crous release titled 'There Was a Boy'.  By request, we slipped in The Uninvited and a track called 'Fixman' making a long overdue appearance.  It's a track of great relevance today with the immortal line "When the bullies go to war".

There was a bit of Gary Numan and Transvision Vamp and another track from Roger Kaye with Blue  Scream titled 'Weak at the Knees.  We also checked out 12th Avenue and gave a big shout-out to frontman Mark Haze who I saw in Tableview last weekend.  the good news is that Mark is rocking and sounding better than ever.  He has without a doubt one of the best voices in the world and it's wonderful to see a guy so talented.  As we said at the gig, he plays guitar as easily as breathing.  We finished off with the Admas Family, Ryan, and Big brother Bryan, lol, just a little joke.

Artists featured:  Slaughter, Mötley Crüe, Mott the Hoople, Def Leppard, Bad Company, The Screaming Jets, James Reyne, Metallica, Satan, Accept, Dream Theatre, Fate Warning, Dark Tranquility, The Rolling Stones, Gov’t Mule, Jasper Dan, Roland Suttie, Prime Circle, Gary Numan & Tubeway Army, Transvision Vamp, Halestorm, Cancer Bats, Motörhead, Avenged Sevenfold, The Gaslight Anthem, Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers, 12th Avenue, Blue Scream, The Uninvited, AMH, Green Day, UK Subs, Pride & Glory, Slayer, Trivium, Megadeth, Kid Rock, Ryan Adams, Bryan Adams
