Police track down the CCTV from the ATM where Melanie's bank card was used and despite the poor image quality, they can see it’s a young woman using it, but it’s not Melanie. Meanwhile a new detective steps in to interview the neighbours in the building. The couple downstairs had actually heard the attack. The upstairs neighbour was harder to track down but was very helpful when police spoke to her at an upmarket new restaurant where she worked as a chef.

Pathologist Dr James Grieve, who made an exception in letting Melanie’s mother see the body despite the severe injuries, describes how he feels when working on such a tragic case. Isla also reminisces with former journalist Alison Shaw about the challenges of being a crime report and why this is a case that has always stayed with them. 

 

As the media begins to learn more details about the horrific murder, Melanie's mother Susan Patrick faces the cameras to make a public appeal for help. A huge influx of calls leads detectives down many paths and the investigation stretches far and wide but then in a casual conversation with police family liaison officers, Susan inadvertently delivers a clue which brings them closer to the killer.
