  • Rhodes Scholar And South African Student Buntu Is Oxford-Bound - Hear His Fascinating Story Of Community Leadership And Water Scarcity Research

    From IOL.co.za, Publishing Date: 12/4/2020 8:00 AM

"Buntu Fanteso is completing his Master's in Water Scarcity. Currently, many parts of the Eastern Cape are faced with water scarcity and so his MSc research is based on unlocking alternative sources of water using traditional technologies.  Buntu has been part of Enactus since 2015, where he served as a Secretary at both campus and institutional level. He is currently involved in an enactus programme that trains students in TVET Colleges to start their own businesses. He has also judged for Eskom Expo for Young Scientists for Mthatha Region, focusing on environmental management and sustainable development projects. In 2018, he was awarded the GreenMatter Postgraduate Scholarship Programme to do a BSc Honours at UJ. Through GreenMatter, Buntu co-founded Basisani Mkhuhlu with other students, an initiative that seeks to address illegal dumping in Mkhuhlu Township.  He is currently leading the Recruitment Portfolio for Young Water Professionals-Gauteng Chapter, a professional network of people working in or interested in the water sector. He has identified the gap that exists between university students and professionals in the corporate world. His intent is to bridge this gap and connect students with young professionals in the environmental sector, for career guidance and mentorship.  Buntu hails from a village called Ngcengane, outside Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.

This village is one with a high dropout rate at secondary school level. With the Rhodes Trust Scholarship, he hopes to inspire young people to continue with their studies - especially in his community,  Buntu completed a BSc in Environmental Studies at Walter Sisulu University in Mthatha in 2017. In 2018, he started a BSc Honours in Geography at UJ where he is currently completing an MSc in Environmental Management.  Says Buntu on being awarded the Rhodes Scholarship: "I'm very excited about it. It is a dream come true. I have always wanted to study abroad but I never thought I would go to Oxford,  I am very grateful to the Rhodes Trust community for awarding me the scholarship.  I would like to thank the six referees who supported me and wrote the referrals, my supervisor Professor Kowiyou Yessoufou, Dr Andrew Craig and friends for their unwavering support and encouragement."  The first person he called when he found out the news of winning the scholarship was his mother.  "Mum is very proud. She was proud when I moved to UJ, so you can imagine how proud she will be as I move from UJ to Oxford University.  One of the key areas that Rhodes Scholarship focuses on is leadership. I hope to use this opportunity and influence young people to be involved in positions of leadership and make positive change in the society," says Buntu.

He plans to pursue his DPhil in Geography and the Environment at the University of Oxford. Buntu is planning to leave for the UK in August next year. This, however, is dependent upon the current COVID-19 pandemic.  A Rhodes Scholarship is confirmed once a successful candidate has been offered a place in a department or faculty of the University of Oxford and in a college.  The Rhodes Scholarship selection committees seek young women and men of outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service.  The Rhodes Scholarships support students from across the globe who demonstrate a strong propensity to emerge as 'leaders for the world's future'.  A Rhodes Scholarship covers all University and College fees, a personal stipend and one economy class airfare to the University of Oxford in the United Kingdom at the start of the Scholarship, as well as an economy flight back to the student's home country at the conclusion of the Scholarship."

  • Learn Grounded Theory For Research With Dr Lynlee Howard-Payne: Two PhDs In Conversation [A Livestream Recording]

If you are using Grounded Theory or thinking about it then this webinar is for you. Lynlee will break it down for you and make it practical, plus she will answer your questions. Dr Lynlee Howard-Payne first introduced me to Grounded Theory when I was starting my PhD. She had used the methodology in her PhD to study medical male circumcision in South Africa. I was very interested in using it to study Agile software development teams in large organisations and her half day workshop convinced me to go for it.  Since then I’ve had an incredible journey with Grounded Theory, even though people either love it or hate it. It’s a rigorous inductive academic method that enables you to develop a new theory about what is going in on the lives of your participants. I recently got back in touch with Lynlee after finishing my own PhD and she’s agreed to chat about Grounded Theory so you can get to grips with it as well. Join in for an awesome conversation between 2 Grounded Theory PhD graduates (but only one of us is the expert!)

  • How An MBA Helped This Successful Student "Get Out Of The Weeds" And Become A More Strategic Project Manager: Candice Shares Her Struggles With Writing And How The International Travel "Blew Her Mind"

Candice Figueira always wanted to do an MBA, to get an "end to end understanding of business". Many of her fellow MBA students wanted to start their own businesses and she says the degree encourages entrepreneurs which is great for South Africa, given its high unemployment levels. Many have started their own businesses but Candice says she was just "really curious" and just wanted to gain knowledge so she could give back and improve in her current job which is project management. The biggest benefit was personal growth, and after her MBA even opted to stay in her role, but now she can contribute more because she understands business. Another great skill she learnt was leadership and she also had some international travel when the cohort interacted with "the big gamechangers" from around the world.

Candice had a 3 month executive leadership programme in Los Angeles when they visited IKEA to learn their vision and strategy. She felt her research module in the MBA wasn't something you can just start and stop, it's more of a process. She found other students struggled because they are "last minute.com". Candice learned to allocate time to writing and research but she doesn't see herself writing a book any time soon. She says the coaching got her through and she heard stories about supervisors who didn't help their students. Looking back, she feels her MBA was exciting at the beginning but there were tough times and you shouldn't give up regardless of personal circumstances.

No matter how hard it gets, just kept going and start with why. If it feels overwhelming, break it down, take one day at a time and make sure you put at least 2 hours aside day. Celebrate the small wins - take each milestone and celebrate!!

  • Breast Cancer Researcher Cara de Moura Loves Tutoring Other Students And Developed A Studying Pattern For Being Successful At Any Module She Does: "If You Think You Can Or Can't You Are Right"

Cara is studying triple negative breast cancer research using "cell culture" in her first year of a Masters Degree at University of Pretoria. She believes she was successful because she "perfected the way I went about each module". She has also started to tutoring other students and wants to give back even more as she continues her successful academic career in biochemistry and pharmacology. She believes you can go so much further with someone helping along the way, especially when there is such a big gap between high school and university. It's all about a progression from "spoonfeeding" at school to finding your own way in a degree, even more so at postgrad level.

She's also seen fellow students switch courses numerous times as they try and settle down in university. Many people also don't finish on time but no matter what you choose, there is no shortcut. People had to go long routes to get where they are and she believes "what is meant to be is meant to be", adding that some lessons can be a bit easier if you think it through. Cara is one of the first people in her family to do a masters and credits her parents with support and setting an example of being really good at what they do.

What worked for Cara will be different for other students and she follows her dad's philosophy of just doing her best., and don't compare yourself with other people. You also can't let your emotions get the better of you, just take it step by step, one year at a time - this is why she's not yet thinking about a PhD but would seriously consider doing one overseas. Her last piece of advice for fellow students: "if you think you can do something or you can't, you are probably right - its all about your mindset"

  • "Like Trying To Get 16 Cats Into A Bag" How A PhD Feels To Tessa Little Who Spent 32 Years Coding And Started Postgraduate Studies In Her 50s And Explains How She Channels Her Stress Through Her Study

Tessa Lillie originally did a 3 year computer science degree many years ago and went into IT as there was lots of demand. She also went over to Germany for a while and became a very technical software engineer for about 32 years. In 2015 she got the feeling she was going down a rabbit hole and was getting bored of coding. After being invited to participate in a colleague's PhD study she decided to do her own.  Now in her 50's she has completed her Masters and is busy with her PhD in Enterprise Data Agility.

I met Tessa when I presented to her masters class on Agile software development and since then she has made outstanding progress on a topic that she really enjoys. Now she is channeling stress into her studies and says its important to integrate across all areas of you life. She believes one of your anchors should be to understand what is going on in your own head and what excites you. The rougher your experience is the better the opportunity to sit back and assess your life.

Tessa makes great use of a research journal to show how her thought process has evolved. In 2020 she did 17 hours of semi-structured qualitative interviews and in 2021 hopes to finish her PhD although sometimes she says it feels like "trying to get 16 cats into a bag".

  • US Army Reservist Michelle Guy Carves Time Out Of A Busy Family Life To Write 3 Papers A Week On Sustainability For The Hospitality Industry: She Explains How Grammarly Helps Her Write Better

Michelle graduated from the University of Georgia and enlisted in the US Army after 9/11 as a specialist. She ended up working in public affairs engineering doing broadcasting and studio work. She's worked for the world's best luxury tour operator and was a US army reservist deployed to Iraq as a broadcast technician. Her husband is also a soldier and she tells the story of how they "fell in love under the palm trees in Baghdad". Originally she struggled to pay for college but got a scholarship as a track athlete and built up some money to study further. At 17 years old she was interested in people but admits she was a bit lost in her academic journey at that age.

Having been out of school for 2 decades since then she feels there's a huge benefit to having life perspective and experience when going back into academic studies. At the faith-based Lipscombe University she also feels treated as an adult and enjoys her studies because there is a lot of application to real world. Because of COVID she was furloughed in early 2020, but she is using her experience in the travel industry to apply what she is learning about sustainability to "get people to yes". Her mantra is People, Profit and Planet and her class materials are ground breaking new frameworks.

Hear about how she uses Grammarly, a writing application, to write better and regularly produces up to 3 papers per week. In this inspiring interview you will hear Michelle talk about her full and inspiring life, which she believes is what you make of it. She will inspire you to take the opportunity to go back to school, figure out what you want to do and reach for your dreams, as long as you don't let your ego get in the away.

  • Learn To Manage Your Expectations About Doing A PhD From Thanusha Govender: Especially In The Early Stages And Milestones, She Takes Us Through In This Authentic Conversation

Thanusha started her professional career as an engineer and went into consulting quite quickly after spending time in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods industry. She's been in banking for the last 8 years and did an executive leadership programme at London Business School. Her entrepreneurial mindset led her to a masters because she wants to unlock value in a "resource-constrained world". She says the academic bug really caught her because she took the plunge to further her studies with a PhD although acknowledges it's more of a "beast" than the Masters level.

She explained the 2 clear milestones at the early stage of a PHD; getting through ethics and getting your proposal aprpoved. She says you must be clear about the value of your research to business / society ultimately the academic value is stress-tested through the process and this can be a difficult stage of the research. She has clearly put every effort into it with 150 pages already completed for her first 3 chapters and she explains the difference between each of them and which she enjoyed the most. Now  that she's through that stage she is focused on getting 450 people to complete her survey as part of a quantitative methodology that requires a lot critical thinking.

We also talked about managing supervisors and Thanusha believes it is crucial to manage it well from both sides. Her tips for supervisor management would be: research previous students with that supervisor, understand the quality of their expectations. I added some of my own tips - listen in and find out more. Thanusha is grateful for her academic journey and the value she has gained: it helped her grow emotionally and she says its so fulfiling when you are utilising what you've learnt and applying it in your personal and professional life.
