Yolandie Richards is a lifelong learner who has just started her PhD. She believes "knowledge is power", she "loves academics" and studied engineering management as her undergraduate degree. Now she is taking her studies to the next level and has applied a range of new practices to ensure she stays on track and gets through. The most interesting technique is that she has left a blank space on her wall above her desk where her PhD certificate will go. Every time she looks at the wall she is reminded of what is going into the blank space and this motivates her to keep going on her journey, which she compares with a marathon, not a sprint. Sticking with the sporting analogues she also believes in the saying that its like riding a bicycle, to stay balanced you must keep moving forward.
Early Saturday morning is her best time of the week to complete a few hours of deep, in-flow studying. After a busy week of work she has a good nights rest on a Friday and wakes up early and does more work in those few hours than she would in the same time during the week when she has lots of other things going on. Another secret of her success is the GRIT formula which teaches an abundance mindset; everything is a learning opportunity and every setback can be converted into a step forward. Community is incredibly important for Phd students and Yolandie believes it can be a lonely road, so all the support and interaction you can get will be beneficial.

π Achieve your goals! Write better, research better, finish your reports! Study harder, go further, get your degree and make your contribution. My name is Peter Alkema and I am your online student success coach.

Nitesh Ramatar started his masters in digital business leadership because he wanted to reinvent himself and get beyond the "surface level learning" of his undergraduate studies. He has enjoyed getting deeper on topics like 4th Industrial Revolution and Digital Transformation and he has aimed to integrate his work / life / studies rather than draw clear boundaries between them. He acknowledges its been a challenge, but has enjoyed the opportunity to challenge his mental model and stay up to date through access to latest articles and research.Β
He meditates once per day to "calm the mind" and despite being a self-proclaimed people-pleaser, he has learned to say no to things if they will push him beyond his capacity. He lives by the 5 Ps of: Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance and has a very practical approach to mapping out each year so he knows in advance what his deadlines so that he doesn't stress about everything all the time. He finds that other students who don't do proper planning tend to stress unnecessarily and together with his daily routine, his planning has helped make him a successful student.
His advice to students is to acknowledge when you don't know something and have an open mind. He also valued being in a good syndicate group and focused on building trusted relationships with his fellow students. This interview was full of practical insights and deeper wisdom that is extremely valuable for all students.

"Do you want to save the world or get your degree?" This is what Doron's supervisor asked him when they discussed his thesis topic. It's a challenge that all researchers face: Take on too much and risk dropping out or narrow scope and get focused on finishing. We all do research to solve problems but with limited time and resources we should only aim as high for what we can achieve. Doron is a Computer Science graduate who is doing a part time masters in digital masters while also running a large team in a big corporate. His thesis is 50% of his degree and with the course work behind him he is now relishing the chance to go deeper into a topic he is passionate about: scaling up Agile practices in large organisations.
Doron also applies agile thinking in his studying and like to make progress as quickly as possible so he can go back and continuously improve through a plan > do > check > act cycle that he repeats as often as possible until he reaches his acceptable level of greatness. He acknowledges that part time student will have to juggle many balls but you should decide which are the glass ones that you will never drop. For him it is soccer with his boys every Sunday mornings and he's quite happy not to be a cum laude student if he can keep the right balance between studies and home life. Β When he reads literature in his field he seeks out the taxonomy articles to get a sense of all the research available and will pick high interest articles to read late at night. His final words of advice was that you should "check your ego at the door" / "don't be a martyr" and remember that you are studying for yourself so make sure you enjoy it.Β
You will definitely enjoy this episode, it's packed with practical insights and wisdom from a successful student. Doron also wins the prize for the best Zoom backgroun; check it out on the video version of this podcast on Youtube.

Stacey has a wealth of experience in achieving student success which she shares in the form of practical tips, wisdom and advice that can only come from deep experience. This experience comes from her 4 degrees and senior leadership position at Wits University as the President of the Convocation, which means she represents over 200,000 students and alumni on the university council. During her lifelong studying she has placed a huge emphasis on trying to achieve the "solve for education" particularly within a uniquely South African context. In her leadership role in education she has been focused on addressing the "missing middle", a part of the population that didn't benefit from the #feesmustfall movement.
In her personal capacity she has learnt how to learn, unlearn, pivot and adapt to changing work requirements and she has had a range of interests in different industries from sports to psychology. She learnt the hard way about the auto-save button when she lost a lot of her work for an assignment and together with many other skills that he developed along the way has become an expert in student success. She felt she underperformed at school but quickly made up for it in a a string of degrees that certainly puts her in the top 5% of graduates from Wits University. She believes in Wayne Gretzky's saying that "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take" and is passionate about being a master of her own destiny, which she says is the single biggest piece of advice she would give students trying to get through their qualifications.

Evasen Parumal did his undergraduate studies on management and he has registered to continue this research with a masters in leadership. He uses what he learns in his job and applies the insights and trends directly in his role where he manages a large team and finds it important to develop optimal leadership practices. He has developed many technique for balancing work and studies, such as emailing himself when he needs to take note of an action such as a book to read or some specific work to do. As a father he also sees his studies as an example for children to value continuous learning but he also takes time out to spend with family as much as possible.
He doesn't worry too much about boundaries between life, work and study; he is quite used to having these all blur into eachother and works best when he needs to juggle quite a few priorities during the day. Β He also took advantage of previous coursework to read further about relevant trends and research that helped inform his own study objectives. Β During the lockdowns of 2020 he made good use of the extra time that he didn't have to drive to work by studying further and making progress on his leadership qualifications. Most importantly he has learnt to question the value of anything he spends his time doing. Like for example he can't justify binge watching multiple series on Netflix, he would rather spend those hours studying, this was one of many examples he gave that provide practical insights into the secrets of this successful student.

π Achieve your goals! Write better, research better, finish your reports! Study harder, go further, get your degree and make your contribution. My name is Peter Alkema and I am your online student success coach.
10 years after achieving her undergraduate degree in biokinetics, Claire decided to go back to the books, even though her twins were 2 years old and she had a demanding job. She talked candidly about how she was clear on what she wanted to achieve and the boundaries she put in place to achieve that. She's a firm believer that you must "be kind to yourself" and always remind yourself why you are putting in all the extra hours. For her it was all worth it when she achieved her Masters with a distinction, having developed some ground breaking research about the wellbeing of call centre agents. Even though her studies were impacted by the COVID19 lockdowns of 2020, she managed to adapt and get everything done with the support of her family and friends, even though she couldn't see them as often as before, especially with studying in the evening and weekly webinars on Tuesdays.
Her advice is that you must be clear on 3 things if you are considering studying part time. How you are going to take action, what you will give up to get there and what are non negotiable boundaries. She wished she had started writing up her final report earlier than she did but she dedicated sufficient time to get it done and really valued all the reading she did up front to get a good sense of the literature and identify the problem she wanted to investigate. Β Its important to test your surveys if you are doing online quantitative research and she was grateful for supportive work colleagues who assisted and encouraged her in many aspects of her studies. Just the night before we recorded the interview she found out she had achieved a distinction so she was looking forward to celebrating and this episode is a perfect story of hard work and principles to achieve student success.

πI have PhD and I've helped thousands of my students achieve their goals, like Flora Makgale: "What an amazing course! After finishing this course, I have confidence. Thank so much Dr Peter Alkema"
Having spend a couple extra years completing her undergraduate degree, Alessandra was passionate about understanding how to improve other student's success rates. She wanted to solve the problem of so many students failing or dropping out and jumped at the chance to do a masters level research using qualitative methods. She realised that previous research was largely quantitative and didn't provide the human insights that she was looking for. She urges students to speak to people to get support and encouragement while also putting in place "hard deadlines" that keep yourself accountable for making progress. Cultural issues also play a big role in student success with many students being the first in their families to study at a university and support structures need to be in place. She felt fortunate to be in a class group and joining the running team but students might tend to isolate themselves in research and this is a big risk.
Its also important to get a mentor, coach or at least someone who has walked the same path and can give you the insights you need. Students are often scared to ask their lecturers questions and they need a safe space to ask questions and interact to get the insights and support they need. Her own success was largely due to reading a huge volume and making notes with generative writing which served her well later on in her studies. She found her thematic, mixed methods research very interesting and although wanted to spend more time on analysing her incredible data set, opted to get finished and is looking forward to coming back to the topic with increased experience in industry and approaching it with a data science approach. Her advice to students in the long hard road of writing their thesis is that "it will finish" and they must trust the process, engage with their supervisors and push through. she would love to do a phd at some stage and promised to come back on the show to give us all an update.

Phumzile always knew she wanted to teach and doing her Masters in Management was a natural progression in her academic journey that also offered her a chance to research her passion. As a career HR professional, she also relished the chance to spread her wings beyond HR and get to grips with the world of woman-owned small businesses and entrepreneurship. The biggest lesson for her was the importance of managing expectations with people in her life about how much time she would have for them during her research, "it consumes you".
Looking back on her studies she shared some very practical things she learnt the hard way and would do differently next time. Like shortening her survey; although she had a decent sample size of 100, she felt more people would have done it if it was shorter. She also wished she had made a stronger link between her key themes and the constructs of her methodology, which she found quite tough and wished she had a better instrument for quantitative research. Despite working on campus until 1am most nights and being at work at 7am, she didn't have any regrets and promised to come back on the show when she has signed up for her PhD.

Prof Ivan Hofsajer co-ordinates postgrad students in the faculty of engineering at Wits University Johannesburg. He has strong views about how the world of tertiary learning needs to change and adapt. His tips on writing have helped me in my own PhD and he explains the difference for lecturers and students between online learning and traditional lectures. Β Β
He believes that "content will be amazing" because of market places but we will be frustrated by the lack of impact it will actually have on students. We have to find a new way of digitising the social compact that students have with eachother and their lecturer and supervisors should really be called advisors. Listen to this episode for a candid reflection from a very experienced lecturer on postgrad writing, research and student success.Β

Kribashnee has gone through a personal transformation as a student. She credits this to the βmindset changeβ she experienced by being exposed to an academic world and then applying those learnings as quickly as possible in her business role. She is studying at a postgraduate level and shares her academic journey with us and the tips she used to get through. She contracted up front with family and people that could support her so she didnβt feel bad when she had to close her study door and get some work done. Contracting with herself meant that she gave herself emotional space and time to succeed without being her own critic. She talks candidly about the importance of getting your mindset right and being kind to yourself if you are studying part time and balancing other priorities such as a family and a job. Β Β
She also rewarded herself with βsomething specialβ after each year of study as well as when she completed her degree which was an incentive to keep going. Even in the tough times like when her son was unwell during her first year she managed to push through and get her assignment completed. This is all about in tune with the journey that you are on as a student. As a part time student she was able to apply her learnings βin real-timeβ and she didnβt have to wait till she got her degree to make a contribution back to her organisation and the people around her. This has made her a lifelong learner and she has now signed up for a masters degree in business leadership and is excited about the next level of growth and contribution she can make to the world.
