Bubu Bana and I both share a similar passion; to help students with all the solutions and support that we wish we had when we were students. I focus on coaching, community and courses for academic and workplace success, he focuses on creating work opportunities for students who desperately need cash and work experience. His freelancing platform is called Jobox and it connects high quality students with meaningful work opportunities. When a student finished a job they can get rated for their work and this will increase their rankings on the platform where businesses are constantly searching for students to do a range of different kinds of jobs.
As a student you need to get work experience before you enter full time work and if this is something you need, then Jobox is the perfect platform for you. Bubu is truly passionate about his platform and the value it offers for students, so don't miss this conversation and experience both Bubu and my complementary support and skillsets for students like yourself. Β We talked about the process of getting onto the platform, what "high quality" means and how the ratings and review process works. Students can even rank their employers and this will ensure a balanced engagement that ensures students have the best chance of success. Bubu also talks about the ratings scale and the 4 key soft skills you need to be successful on Jobox.
Don't miss this fantastic interview!

I had the distinct privilege of working with Pie many years ago soon after he graduated and started work as a business analyst. His story since then is almost as fascinating as the years prior and in this episode I shed a tear for the incredible example this fine gentleman and distinguished academic scholar presents to everyone, especially students needing a dose of the right mindset and inspiration. As a young boy growing up in Rwanda he saw family members killed and his mother begged him to leave the country to study and make a life for himself. With just the clothes on his back he ended up on the streets in Durban where he was a car guard outside a university. He tells the story of watching students swipe their student cards through the turnstiles and his heart ached to have the same privilege - he was so desperate that he even just wanted to hold a student card and feel what it was like to go through a turnstile. He learned English from old VHS cassettes in the Durban public library, but as a refugee he had to battle his way through red tape and endless challenges to get a bursary and finally start his Physics degree.
After being in hospital twice for depression he eventually finished his degree and in his honours year became part of the first international cohort of Nelson Mandela Rhodes scholars. Having listened on the radio to Nelson Mandela's release when he was a boy in war torn Rwanda, Pie eventually met his political hero and then made his way to Johannesburg to start his full time working life at a large bank. Since then he has travelled to over 20 countries in Africa and today he leads a business school and collaborates with top international universities like Yale and Manchester. Every time he confers a degree on one of his students he remembers how much he yearned to hold a student card and the long hard road he has travelled. His message for students is that execution matters, manage your time, apply yourself and remember that success is not about how smart you are, its much more about your daily discipline and resilience.
He's currently writing a book about his life, due to be published in late 2021. What's the most important thing he has learned through it all? No matter what he experienced, and no matter what you experience, try and always say; "in this too I am grateful".Β

Robert Hutchison-Keip admits he didn't know enough at 16 to make wise career choices. He picked microbiology from the university handbook because he thought it would be interesting and the main reason he did his honours year is because he was avoiding being drafted for service in the army. After he realised he didn't like sciences he changed course to become a chartered accountant and looking back realised that only in his 40s was he clear about what interested him. His 6 tertiary level qualifications have made him a well rounded and highly successful businessman whose innovative banking product was the subject of a Harvard Business School case study. He believes that real contribution is made through inter-disciplinary study and is grateful for the non-traditional courses he has done in his academic career.
He shares very interesting insights about his time at Oxford and the way its traditions and teaching style make it the top ranked university in the world. At Oxford, Rob wanted to benchmark himself on an international stage and get access to top lecturers and world leaders sitting right next to him in class. He believes that choosing a university is a very personal decision and depends entirely on what you want to get out of it. Β His learning style is drawing and summarising complex ideas in frameworks and 1-pagers; find your learning style and make sure to choose a university that encourages it. Rob's views on 4IR in education are quite radical and e challenges the traditional view of careers and faculty-based research. Β He believes the world has sped up in the last 50 years and there's an incredible shift in the psyche of people as we adapt to the disruption.
Rob has had an incredible academic and professional career over the last 40 years but he keeps learning, adapting and contributing back into his network. Β Listen to his life lessons and you will benefit from this wealth of experience to make the most of your own journey to student success.

Chris started his student journey in IT and then did a postgraduate diploma in management as he worked his way towards a more business focused career path. Now that he's finished his MBA he has lots of insights for students, such as the sheer amount of hours required for an MBA means you really have to be sure you want to do it, and have the extra 20-30 hours per week that you will need. He credits his family for their amazing support and although he worked 7 days a week he always took time to be with the family during the evenings and get to church on a Sunday. Β Chris believes that you must find what works for you and although he needed his coffee to get going in the early morning, that was when he did his best work.
His research was on a large bank's platform journey and he was interested in the change management aspects and how people adapted. Β Chris breaks down the MBA process of doing research and submitting dissertation chapters; his technical experience came in handy as he transcribed and analysed his 16 interviews. The most valuable insight I took away from this fascinating interview was the importance of developing your topic right at the beginning of an MBA so that your exams and assignments are all completed with the topic in mind. It also means you can get straight into research during that phase of the MBA.
His MBA was an "itch he needed to scratch" and he doesn't have plans to study but now that he's been promoted he has his sights set on climbing the corporate ladder. Don't miss this episode for some fascinating insights.

Kanina Foss "zig-zagged" her way through careers and studies in computer science, journalism and climate change before landing her dream job raising venture capital for women-founded start-ups in Africa. She also held a senior position at Wits University during the Fees Must Fall period when there was significant upheaval in higher education in South Africa. Following another chaotic year in 2020 she believes that universities are facing a disruptive future and the acceleration to digital is one that should be embraced, but balanced with sufficient human interaction. Her world view is also her passionate advice to students: "ask what you can do for the world, not what the world can do for you".
As a journalist she learnt to write fast and with brevity, and that these are lessons that also apply to academic writing. This interview was full of practical insights and I was particularly interested in what she's learnt about studying at the postgraduate level. Kanina did an interdisciplinary study in her Masters of Science in Global Change and she urges students to get going with your topic as early a possible and engage with industry for supervisors and support. Its alo important to start with why and work backwards to the how so that you can juggle all the balls in your life without burning out. Looking ahead she believes that local universities will have to stay relevant and provide unique offerings, especially when you can attend Harvard online.
As for her own future, you can hear the passion in her voice when she says that only 3% of global capital goes to woman-founded companies. Β This is a statistic that she's working hard to change and if anyone can achieve it, I know Kanina can. Don't miss this inspiring interview with a highly successful student.

Chante van Tonder is a lecturer and PhD student at the University of Johannesburg. She is also their official ambassador for 4th Industrial Revolution and is researching how smaller companies can adopt digital transformation business models. She's looking forward to when she can call herself Dr. C and believes you must be absolutely clear about your goals before putting in the hard work and making the sacrifice to achieve them. In this interview she explains how students should progress from high school to tertiary education levels and then on through postgraduate to where she is now, at the PhD level, and which she hopes to finish in 2021. Β
It's clear that this successful student "loves to learn" and her academic journey has been one of adapting to circumstances and grabbing opportunities. If she hadn't accepted a tutoring position she doubts she would be where she is today; she is researching a topic she is passionate about and has a bursary from the Netherlands where she spent 3 months as part of her study. There she was exposed to an international work ethic which opened her eyes and confirmed the importance of the right mindset when studying at that level. As a lecturer she has seen how students who engage and consult are more successful and University of Johannesburg works hard to integrate work experience into its academic programme. Β Β
Her advice to students is: get organised, have enough sleep, communicate effectively and have fun! Find out more in this inspiring interview.Β

My name is Peter Alkema and I am your online student success coach.
Roxann attributes her student success to a strong emotional support from her study group and wakes up each day keen to "fill her bowl" and learn as much as possible. Having been in banking for 15 years she did her undergraduate while working part time and kept going even with her studies even when she got pregnant with her third child. To avoid being distracted when she studies she gives her phone to her daughter and then she makes full use of the time she has carved out on her study timetable. Now that she is doing her honours in business leadership, Roxann has seen the importance of the right mindset and encourages everyone to maximise the opportunity to study.
This is a truly inspiring story which Roxann hopes is the "pick me up" that you need to day. Listen in to find out how this successful student uses a "Learning Journal" to track the ups and downs of her academic activities so that she can look back and remind herself how far she has come. Looking ahead, she is confident that she will finish her honours "in the blink of an eye" but her success will not be measured by marks alone, she wants to take people with her on the journey and use what she has learnt to inspire others and drive more meaningful conversations, whether at work or at the "braai" on the weekend with her friends and family.
I was truly inspired by Roxann's story and I have no doubt that after listening to this episode, you will be motivated to keep going and reach for your goals as well.

Prof Carmichael helped me with Grounded Theory in my own PhD, she has a distinguished academic career and regularly publishes and presents at conferences in her field. Her advice to students is to manage your boundaries and understand exactly how much time is required for your degree; she breaks down the actual recommendedΒ hours per week for all degree levels. Listen in to find out more but I'm quite sure its more than you think! Over two decades of lecturing, supervising and publishing has given her a very good understanding of how to achieve student success.
Prof Carmichael strongly believes that a student and their supervisor must meet eachother half way and you must be in motion to get meaningful direction. In other words, don't wait until you've got something to say before you say something, or write something; postgrad success really requires forward motion, constant learning, listening and engaging. It's taken 18 years to develop a framework for how students should engage the literature and orientate their study in the context of research questions.
We touched on Grounded Theory in the interview but look out for a full episode when we'll discuss it in much more detail. It was an inspiring and candid discussion of postgraduate studies that will really help position you for taking on a serious commitment and being successful.

During her successful career in banking Julie-Anne learnt how to work 10-13 hours per day and achieved a distinction for her part-time masters in Education and Artificial Intelligence. At an early age she wanted to be a scientist despite being told she didn't have good enough marks. Her story is one of courage and determination, as well as a passion for how technology can help achieve student success. Today she has the freedom to pursue various interests which include part time lecturing, a family with 6 month old twins and a PhD that will design and build a software application that does online tutoring using artificial intelligence.
Her advice to students is that a PhD is totally different to a Masters and its very important to spend enough time on a well defined proposal. Up to 50% of your proposal can be re-used for your thesis and a good proposal really puts the rest of your research on a good track. Β She is passionate about how AI can help students achieve success because "machines don't get tired" and technology is advancing so rapidly that soon it will be able to tutor a student as well as a human. She says you have to plan ahead and visualise your future, but then you must grab it with both hands and if you choose a topic you love then your study will be "euphoric". Β
Don't miss this fantastic interview with a passionate and determined successful student.
