Bullying can happen to anyone, at any age, in any culture. We have been on the receiving end and we may have been the bully at times throughout our lives.
From a behavioural perspective, 'bullying' is a sign of someone meeting their need for significance and certainty. According to the 6 human needs we all have these 6 core needs that we must meet!
They can be met with maturity, sustainably and resourcefully OR they can be met with immaturity, un-resourcefully and unsustainability.
By demeaning, being rude, hurtful or controlling towards others a person may get their need for certainty and significance met for a very short time, feeling they are important and in control. A lot of the time the bully is not even aware of why they are doing what they are doing and more importantly how they can change.
This is why, it is up to others, to stand strong, calm and use their own power to express that it is not acceptable and just how the bully-ish behaviour impacts others. Essentially we all teach others how they can treat us, what is acceptable and what isn't.
If we can teach our children (whether you are a teacher, a social worker, a parent, a grandparent, a close friend) how to face our own fears, how to manage and deal with bullies at a young age, can we then have a new generation of adults who understand why this occurs and how they can stay in their own empowerment and resourcefully manage and deal with bullies well into their adulthood.
Because let's be real, there are adult bullies everywhere and they are adults who as children learned that they could always get their need for significance and certainty met by bullying others, they now just disguise it better.
The world can be tough enough, let us all do our part to make it a safer, kinder and happier place for us all, because the impacts of bullying and unaddressed and unresolved bullying can have a very serious impact on a person.
Today, I am honored to have a young, brave and amazing young teen, share her very raw and real experience with dealing with her personal bullying experience, how it impacted her, how she felt and how she overcame her own fears to push through and grow through this experience and her advice on how others can maybe resolve and deal with similar situations to find peace and safety again.
