  • 024: 5 Fantastic Reasons to be Selfish

    Don't be selfish.

    Think of others.

We teach it to our kids all the time.

But when is being selfish not being selfish?

When you're doing something for yourself that actually benefits others.

Because by finding the time to do something just for you, you're giving your kids a much happier, more content and more engaged mum.

By being so-called selfish you're actually being incredibly smart.

In this weeks episode of The Friday Café, Michelle Dawson and I talk about five fantastic reasons to be selfish.

  • 064: | What I Learned from Childhood about the Importance of Embracing Change | Lisa York

I don’t think I’ve ever reflected on my own childhood as much as I have since becoming a mum myself. I expect you feel the same.

Your childhood experiences shape and mould the things you do as a mum. You’ve bought your rituals from a time when you were a kid yourself into your own family today.

All the fun stuff. Like having pizza and a movie on a Friday night.

But there are also the things that you’ve decided never to do with your own brood. Because you don’t want them to feel the way you did growing up.

I hadn’t realised until I became a mum why I’m so pro change. Why I’m all for taking control of your life. And why I’m a firm believer that you have the power to shape your own future.

Turns out, it stems from my own childhood.

This week on High Five Friday, I talk about the importance of embracing change. Because if you don’t, it can cause a whole heap of problems that you didn’t bargain for.

Get back in your lighthouse, and let your light shine

If I told you to get back into your lighthouse, you'd probably think I was being rude. But what if that's the best place for you?

Using a lighthouse as a metaphor, Life Coach Victoria Kate explains why coming out of your lighthouse doesn't help anyone.

Not yourself. Not your children. Not your family or your friends. Nope. The best place for you is back inside.
Because that's where you serve everyone best.

This week on High Five Friday, Victoria and I tell you about the importance of staying strong and shining your light brightly. For everyones sake.

  • 023: Secrets to Developing a Strong Mind and Finding Balance | Sara Robinson

In today's episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we'll be discussing how to create the strength of mind of an athlete to use in your life as a mum which will help to create balance and harmony in your busy world.

My guest today is SuperMum, Sara Robinson.

Sara has two small boys aged 4 and 1, has a Masters Degree in Sports Psychology and is a Mental Skills Coach. After learning first hand how hard it is to juggle everything that comes with the job title of Mum, Sara worked out the solution and went on to launch 'Get Mom Balanced' an online community of mums.

In her work, Sara brings together her professional skills and knowledge helping athletes, plus her experience as a mum, to help other busy mums create balance and develop the mental skills needed to survive and thrive in motherhood.

Today Sara will teach us why Mental Skills Training is so beneficial, and gives us some practical tools that we can use to strengthen our minds as mums. And I don't know about you, but some days I need some of that in extra large doses.

Sara will help us understand why it's important to look under our own bonnet, to find where our own passions and interests lie. We can then use that as a springboard to find out what makes us tick and then harness that to create a life that we love. A life that's fulfilling to us as a woman, instead of simply fulfilling the needs of everyone else all the time.

I'm excited that Sara is joining us today because she's passionate about helping mums to seek balance and give them support for the challenges of mom life. And I'm confident that she'll help you too.

  • 022: Brilliant Tactics to Banish Worry

As a mum, you have plenty to worry about.

Trouble is, worry doesn't change anything, and most of the things you worry about never end up happening.

If a problem CAN be solved, why worry about it? Instead use your energy to fix it.

If a problem CAN'T be solved, why worry about it? There's nothing you can do to stop it. Instead use your energy to deal with it.

Don't miss the sun that's shining today worrying about the rain that may come tomorrow.

Worry never serves us. And it doesn't change anything. Only you can change it.

Have faith in yourself that you can overcome it.

Because you can SuperMum. You can.

In this weeks episode of The Friday Café, Michelle Dawson and I talk about the brilliant tactics you can use to banish worry.

  • 057: The Mummy Professor: Gaining Knowledge and ‘Winging It’ | Alexis ‘Lekki’ Frazier-Wood
    No study is perfect
    [Lekki Frazier-Wood]

It will comfort you to know, that having a PhD in Child Development doesn't necessarily mean you feel like an expert when it comes to raising your own children. The decisions and choices you make for your children are just as tough, with or without prior knowledge.
In today’s episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we’ll be discussing what it's like for an English woman to raise children in America; how traditional roles can be turned on their heads; and how a career researching child development can influence parenting techniques.
My guest today is SuperMum, Lekki Frazier-Wood.
Originally from London, Lekki started her career as a Social Scientist specialising in child development, and has spent 8 years living in Alabama and Texas. English-born Lekki now lives in Houston with her American husband Wes, 4 year old son and daughter of 15 months. She's a Professor of Paediatrics, studying childhood nutrition at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas.
Before meeting her husband, it never crossed Lekki's mind that she would marry an American or have children anywhere other than England. And having kids in a foreign land has challenged her thinking about the norms of the Southern 'Bible Belt' and now views parenting practises from a fresh perspective.
Lekki offers us a glimpse into her professional and personal world, including insights into her academic study of childhood nutrition, as well as her personal views on feeling confident whilst navigating the parenting maze.
I'm excited to welcome Lekki to my show today where she will assure you that no matter what your style of parenting, loving your children means you're already doing an amazing job.

In this episode, we talk about:

Lekki's career story that led her across the Atlantic to Alabama and into the arms of her future husband
How Lekki and her husband reversed traditional roles when they first had children, and the affect it had on them
Why Lekki made the decision, even before she was pregnant, to commit to her career and return to work as soon as possible
How parenting in the United States is 'unbelievably different' to parenting in the UK
What left Lekki with her jaw open and her eyes wide saying 'Oh my goodness, what have I done'
Which country is more reflective, more self-judgemental, and more heated about the styles of parenting
Why 'winging it' sometimes beats reading parenting books
Some shared knowledge about the nutritional study of children that she is currently undertaking

     Hope you enjoy todays show!

    Tell me what you think?
If you want to leave a comment for Lekki, whether it's about her research in child development or your own thoughts on raising children as an ex-pat, then we'd love you to come and say hello.
    And let us know in the comments;
Are you raising children in circumstances you didn't previously consider? Do you use your intuition when parenting or do you prefer to do it 'by the book'?
We can't wait to hear from you.

  • 056: What I’d Say to Judgemental Strangers, If I Had the Nerve | Lisa York
Those who judge don't understand. Those who understand don't judge

Has a random stranger ever come up to you and told you off about what you're doing (or not doing) with your child?
There's nothing I find more irritating.
Stranger: "Excuse me dear, it's a very cold day. Don't you think he should have his socks on".
You: "You don't say. That's why I've put them back on 15 times already and finally gave up about a minute before you arrived" (said in thought bubble).
It's happened to me just a few times in my 7 years as a parent, but boy, do I remember it.
    Why?

Because it's annoying. And it feels like a hurtful criticism when I'm trying my best.
    Does the stranger remember it?
    No. Of course not.
Because to them it's just a fly-away comment.
This week on High Five Friday, I rant about what I'd say to that random stranger, if I had the nerve.

  • 021: Self Care is Vital and Here's the Proof | Lauren Wills

In today's episode of Mum-to-Mum Monday we'll be discussing a research study that is currently being conducted into the well-being of mothers of pre-school aged children.

My guest today is SuperMum, Lauren Wills.

Lauren has an 8 year old daughter, and a son who is 5, and is a Life Coach for Mums. She's passionate about helping women reclaim their inner spark and live a life they love.

Lauren has a Master of Social Work from Monash University in Melbourne, Australia and is currently a PhD candidate studying the well-being of pre-school mothers.

In her work, Lauren has discovered that there's a tremendous amount of research into the institution of motherhood, but sadly, we often don't get to hear about it.

But she's determined to change that, because Lauren believes that when more information is readily available to us mothers, we'll stop feeling like our problems are exclusively ours, or that we have to work out a solution and deal with those challenges by ourselves.

Lauren's research has shown that a mother's well-being has a more positive an impact on her child than her education, her employment, the number of hours her child spends in day care or any other factors. Read that again. It's really significant.

I'm excited that Lauren is joining us today to share her knowledge and findings, and in doing so, gives us the kick-start we need to start prioritising our own well-being.
