In this episode of The Surfcast Podcast, Jerry and Toby kick off a new segment in which they discuss a topic from surfcasting history or lore that has gone out of fashion for one reason or another. The topic this time around is the Goo Goo Eyes plug, first produced by Leo Cooper of Stratford, Connecticut in the 1950s. Over the years some outstanding catches have been made on the various Goo Goo Eyes models, including Charlie Cinto's 73-pounder landed by boat off Cuttyhunk, Massachusetts. Designed as a boat trolling plug, it didn't take long for surfcasters to put it to good use as well, and the guys recount some stories of their own made over the years.

While the originals are now long out of production and only available at used tackle swaps and places like eBay, a couple modern, commercial builders produce a version of the Goo Goo Eyes including Afterhours Custom Plugs https://www.afterhoursplugs.com/ and Lemire's Plugworks https://www.lemiresplugworks.com/.

While Dennis is most famously known for the needlefish and fishing on Block Island in the 1980s, he is well-versed in a variety of tactics for targeting cow-sized striped bass in the surf, and this time around he divulges some of the secrets that he learned about fishing with the Cotton Cordell Red Fin. From how he first heard about it, to finding a magic "toxic plug" washed up on the shores of Block Island, he recounts stories from his years in the surf centered around the Red Fin and why it has been a staple in his surf bag for nearly 40 years!
