Matthew 6:25-34 is really a continuation of 6:19-24 where Jesus warns of hoarding “treasure.”

In Matthew 6:25-34 Jesus zooms in on obsessive worry. Our unchecked desire to stockpile more & more can not only give a false sense of control & stunt our generosity … but it also fogs up our heart with obsessive worry.

In Matthew 6, Jesus zooms in on our motives for our spiritual actions: Do we do them for intimacy wIth God or attention from others? Our spiritual actions often reveal our heart motives.

In Matthew 6:19-34 Jesus also looks at our actions, unpacking how we
approach wealth & worry, but I think it’s psychologically deeper.

Matthew 6:19-24 is a warning toward the accumulation of stuff, how we see it all & how it reveals our submission to Jesus’ radical Kingdom way.

In Matthew 6, Jesus zooms in on our motives for spiritual actions. Do we do them for intimacy with God or attention from others? Verses 1-4 Jesus looks at our motives behind giving to those in needs and then transitions to our prayers in 6:5-15:

Verses 5-8, He highlights the motive problem.
Verses 9-15 is an invitation into & model for honest prayer.

Throughout the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus is not only wanting to get to the heart of what you do, but He wants to get to the heart of who you are.

In Matthew 6:1-8 we find Jesus urging His followers to not pursue righteous acts to be seen or validated.
