  • What If Jesus Was Serious? | Divorce & Oaths (5:31-37)

Matthew chapter 5-7 is Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, the longest recorded sermon we have of Jesus. Many Christians approach Jesus’ sermon-manifesto as “neat” but not realistic. Like, “Maybe it’s a metaphor to a larger point, right?”

BUT WHAT IF JESUS WAS SERIOUS?

    This sermon changes everything!
This is part 5 with our good friend Caleb Walden!

  • What If Jesus Was Serious? | Lust (5:27-30)

Matthew 5:27-30, Jesus continues to NOT mince words. In His first “You’ve heard it was said … but I tell you…” (5:21-26) He equated murder with sinful anger expressed in verbal insults laced with contempt. Here, He equates adultery with objectifying another through lust.

Lust, like sinful anger (5:21-26), objectifies the other person, refusing to see them as sacred.

In Contempt, they become an object for our anger-satisfaction.

In Lust, they become an object for our sexual-fantasy-satisfaction.

  • What If Jesus Was Serious? | Hatred & Insults (5:21-26)

In Matthew 5:17-20, Jesus assures the people & religious leaders that He wasn’t there to tear things down, but neither to tow a particular “party line” of thinking when it came to scripture…instead, He said: “I’m here to fulfill it!”

Over next 27 verses (21-48), 6 different times, Jesus takes popular Old Testament interpretations or straight quotes but Jesus & digs deeper into the heart of issues like: hatred, lust, revenge, divorce, honesty, revenge. With each issue He begins, “You’ve heard that it was said …” and then offers, “but I tell you…”

The first of these is on hatred & insults, Matthew 5:21-26.

  • What If Jesus Was Serious? | Salt, Light & Fulfillment (5:13-20)

Matthew 5:13-16: You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot. You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

Matthew 5:13-16 is a call to INFLUENCE the world as His followers. What does this look like for disciples of Jesus today?

  • What If Jesus Was Serious? | Beatitudes (5:1-12)

Part one covers Matthew 5:1-12, Jesus’ introduction where He blesses the most unlikely in His now infamous upside-down fashion.

We end our GOD-BREATHED series by looking some at
HOW Jesus read and thought about scripture and how this way changes everything!

There’s a power that Jesus kept pointing to; something undergirding and holding things together; it’s the very heart and nature of God and …
    it changes everything!

  • God Breathed, Part 5: Transcendence

The Bible is complex in its content but there’s complexity in presuppositions we bring TO IT & expectations we put ON IT. Bible is profound & amazing. There’s no book like it! Therefore, we must approach scripture on its terms.

Verses like 1 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20-21 & Hebrews 4:12 reveals that a Big PURPOSE of scripture is to move history forward & draws people closer to God!

1 Timothy 3:16: All Scripture is inspired by God (literally “God-Breathed”) and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right.

In many ways, the Bible transcends Categories, Ribbons & Sides. It transcends categories where we want to make the bible fit neatly into easily digestible explanations that just happen to fit what we already believe! It transcends tying simple ribbons around difficulties & it transcends a simple use of scripture to prove God is on your side.

  • God Breathed, Part 4: Moving Forward

The Bible is complex in its content but there’s complexity in presuppositions we bring TO IT & expectations we put ON IT. Bible is profound & amazing. There’s no book like it! Therefore, we must approach scripture on its terms.

Verses like 1 Timothy 3:16, 2 Peter 1:20-21 & Hebrews 4:12 reveals that a Big PURPOSE of scripture is to move history forward & draws people closer to God!

Scripture reveals God meeting people where they were but then pulling the whole thing forward!

Some bible stories cause more tension with us today. This is often because we read them through our modern filters vs. the ancient ones they were written from. This distraction can cause us to miss some brilliant truths!

  • God Breathed, Part 3: Digging In

In part 3 of God-Breathed, we want to give a peak at how digging IN & digging DEEPER
into scripture reveals much more going on underneath the big picture. Digging in helps the universals of scripture become personal.

KEEP IN MIND: the more you learn to zoom out & get your arms around the big story that scripture is telling (part 2), the more you’ll notice the subtle treasures below the surface.

So, allow us to show some examples of digging in a little…

  • God Breathed, Part 2: Zooming Out

God exists & has spoken. The Bible is complex in its content but there’s also complexity in the presuppositions we bring TO IT & the expectations we put ON IT.

Part of the aim in this series GOD-BREATHED is to help us approach scripture on its own terms instead of expecting it to be something it never promised to be.

The bible is indeed ancient but clearly brilliant … obviously, since we’re still talking about the same issues scripture unpacks. It presents a narrative of God meeting people where they are, to push history forward and us closer to Christ!

The bible is like a stick of soul-dynamite, but to light the fuse, it’s helpful to ZOOM out before digging-in or applying within. Tonight we’ll focus some on zooming out.
