On June 12, 2025, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals issued an administrative stay of Judge Charles Breyer’s order, which had declared President Trump’s federalization of California’s National Guard troops unconstitutional and sought to return command to Governor Gavin Newsom  . That appellate pause leaves control of roughly 4,000 Guard members and 700 Marines in federal hands through the pending appeal process. A hearing is scheduled for June 17, 2025  .

Trump had mobilized the troops in response to protests sparked by ICE raids in Los Angeles, framing them as insurrection-level threats and federal property protections—language akin to invoking the Insurrection Act  .

WHAT HAPPENED

In a sweeping pre-dawn air assault, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion — striking more than 100 targets inside Iran. Over 200 Israeli fighter jets hit nuclear sites, ballistic missile factories, and command centers across Tehran and Natanz.

Israel confirmed it killed three top Iranian commanders:

* Gen. Hossein Salami — head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps

* Gen. Mohammad Bagheri — Chief of Staff of Iran’s Armed Forces

* The commander of Iran’s Emergency Command

Iran responded by launching over 100 armed drones toward Israeli territory. Israel, Jordan, and Iraq activated air defenses and intercepted most of them.

Explosions were reported at the Natanz uranium enrichment facility, the heart of Iran’s nuclear program. Iran admitted senior personnel were killed and confirmed a Revolutionary Guard headquarters in Tehran was hit. Iranian state media also reported at least six nuclear scientists dead.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the mission was aimed at stopping Iran from reaching nuclear weapons capability. “We are at a decisive moment in Israel’s history,” he said in a video. “This operation will continue for as many days as it takes.”
