WHAT HAPPENED
The FBI is intensifying surveillance and counterintelligence operations across the U.S. in response to growing concerns that Iran may activate covert cells tied to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) or Hezbollah. This comes amid mounting tensions between Iran, Israel, and the West, with national security experts warning that Tehran may resort to asymmetrical attacks on U.S. soil if the conflict escalates.
FBI Director Kash Patel has reportedly authorized additional monitoring of known Iranian operatives and sympathizers, focusing on cities with significant diaspora communities and past intelligence activity. The FBI’s Counterterrorism and Cyber Divisions are working in tandem with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Joint Terrorism Task Forces nationwide.
Recent cases underscore the threat:
* In 2022, the FBI uncovered a plot by an IRGC member to assassinate former National Security Advisor John Bolton. The suspect, Shahram Poursafi, remains at large and is believed to be in Iran.
* A separate 2011 plot by the Quds Force aimed to bomb a D.C. restaurant to kill the Saudi ambassador.
* Investigations are ongoing into Iranian influence operations targeting U.S. dissidents and journalists.
In addition, the FBI is tracking Iran’s cyber activities, which include phishing campaigns, data breaches, and attempts to influence U.S. elections. Several IRGC-affiliated hackers have been indicted for attempting to undermine both the 2020 and 2024 campaigns.
WHY IT MATTERS
The U.S. intelligence community has long considered Iran a leading state sponsor of terrorism, but analysts say the threat has evolved. Instead of launching large-scale attacks, Iranian operatives increasingly rely on small cells, online propaganda, and cyber sabotage to advance their objectives without triggering full-blown retaliation.
If Iran decides to retaliate for strikes on its nuclear sites or leadership, it could target American soil through these covert networks. FBI analysts fear that even a single attack—carried out by a lone actor or a small team—could spark public panic and justify broader military escalation.
At the same time, the threat of assassination plots against former and current U.S. officials has increased. Many of the targets are individuals involved in shaping policy toward Iran.
WHAT TO WATCH FOR
* Retaliation Plans: Iran could activate cells in the U.S. or Europe to retaliate if its leaders are killed or if a military strike damages nuclear infrastructure.
* Cyberattacks: Iranian-linked hackers may attempt to disrupt U.S. power grids, water systems, or elections as part of an ongoing cyberwarfare strategy.
* False Flags: Officials warn that Iran or its proxies could use misinformation to blame attacks on other groups and muddy the public response.
* State Department Travel Alerts: Warnings for overseas Americans, especially in the Middle East, may offer early indicators of escalations.
BOTTOM LINE
The FBI is preparing for a possible surge in Iranian-backed activity inside the U.S. The agency has not confirmed any imminent attack, but the pattern of assassination attempts, digital aggression, and sleeper cell warnings paints a clear picture: Iran is watching, waiting, and potentially planning.
Americans may not see this war unfold on a battlefield—but it’s already underway in courtrooms, servers, and city streets. The threat is real, and the FBI is on alert.
