Between January and September 2021, Arizona saw $1.6B in total cannabis sales (including both medical and adult-use sales).

When we compare Arizona to other medical cannabis markets that have recently legalized adult-use sales, such as Michigan and Illinois, we find that Arizona shows strong year over year growth, growing 110% YoY in September 2021.

Concentrates hold a significant market share in Arizona compared to other US markets at 10%. While Flower is still the dominant category, market share to this category has been decreasing, and market share to Vapor Pens and Pre-Rolls have increased.

When we look at pricing trends, we notice a sharp decrease in average item pricing (AIP) of Flower from January to September (-21%), indicating an over supply of inventory in the category or potentially an adjustment to pricing to match consumer expectation. This runs in contrast to a 7% increase in AIP for Vapor Pen items over the last nine months.

Although still a young market, Michigan is surpassing more mature markets in sales. From January to July 2021, Michigan has reached $970.4M in sales, exceeding both Washington and Oregon markets. When we break down Michigan's medical and adult-use cannabis markets, we find that in January, Michigan’s medical sales made up 38% of total sales but decreased to 27% of sales in July. When compared to other markets in this report, Michigan has the highest share to Edibles, and sells more Caramels, Chews, and Taffy than Colorado and California. Michigan also has the second highest average basket size so far this year at $81.04.

Canadian #cannabis giant #CanopyGrowth Corp and the owners of cannabis gummy maker Wana said they have struck an almost $300 million deal contingent on U.S. Federal legalization.

In 2021, 46% of cannabis consumers reported enjoying pre-rolls. Last year, pre-roll sales in recreational U.S. cannabis markets saw 59% year over year growth with total sales increasing from $704M in 2019 to $1.12B in 2020.

This growth in pre-roll sales outpaced the total market which grew by 54.2% over the same period, according to data from Headset.

When survey respondents were asked to talk about their pre-roll production processes, it becomes clear that increased automation is how producers are scaling to meet demand.

Cone-filling machines are becoming mandatory. Additionally, industrial grinders are key to breaking down the cannabis product prior to packing. Any business looking to move pre-rolls at scale needs these two machines. There is a surprising number of businesses still using hand sifters and blenders who need to now start automating their processes before it's too late.

Although total cannabis sales have been low in Maryland compared to other US markets with only $370M through August 2021, sales have been fairly steady month to month, ranging from $42M - $48M in the last eight months.

Maryland has the second highest share to Flower compared to other US markets, and the lowest market share to Edibles at 7.4%. This might be due to the high average item prices of Edibles in Maryland.

Illinois reached $1.1B in total cannabis sales so far this year, and is only a little more than $400K away from surpassing Michigan as the third highest market for cannabis sales in the US. Illinois has the second highest Vapor Pen share (+26.2%) compared to other US markets that we track in Headset Insights, and the second lowest share for Flower at 42.7%. While there haven't been any major shifts in category market shares so far this year, Concentrates share has decreased slightly from 8.5% to 6.9% from January to August, and Vapor Pens have increased their share from 25.6% to 27.2% from January to July this year.
