 With just weeks to go before the DA closes nominations ahead of a national conference scheduled for April, DA leader John Steenhuisen is in poll position to be re-elected party leader. With SA's official opposition having haemorrhaged leaders to newly formed ActionSA in recent years, Steenhuisen is the only candidate who has thus far accepted nomination for the top job in the party.

This comes at a time where the official opposition has been bleeding votes at by-elections and not mastering its position as coalition partner ahead of a national election that may see a move away from single-party rule. Congolese President Felix Tshisekedi on says that the M23 rebel group had not fully withdrawn from areas it seized in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, accusing the militia of faking an agreed pullback of its forces. Regional leaders brokered an agreement in November under which the Tutsi-led group was meant to withdraw from recently seized positions by January the 15th as part of efforts to end a conflict that has displaced at least 450,000 people and sparked a diplomatic crisis between the DRC and neighbouring Rwanda. Speaking at that World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Tshisekedi says that despite international pressure, the group is still there. He goes on to say that they pretend to move, they act like they are moving, but they're not. They're simply moving around, redeploying elsewhere, and they stay in the towns that they have captured. Seeing that the country is also in election year, what could all of this mean?

They were arrested after protesting residents allegedly set alight the house belonging to the family of the Ngwathe Municipality mayor Victoria de Beer. Since October 2022, there has been an outbreak of measles in South Africa and to date, it has affected five provinces. The most common symptoms of the virus are fever and a rash. The virus can cause severe complications like encephalitis, blindness, diarrhoea and dehydration. It can be fatal for infants under two years of age are most at risk.

As schools have reopened throughout the country, it does put children at a higher risk due to contagiousness of the virus. Our next guest is urging parents to get their children vaccinated as the Department of Health kicks off a vaccination campaign.
