I found 'files' for a 'tabbed' open-source file explorer (after the discussion last week and fruitless appeal for ideas from people about what they use for tabbed file explorers!) - looks quite good and very Windows 11 in theme - lots of options. GitHub - files-community/Files: A modern file manager for Windows also available in the Microsoft Store for direct download, free.

Adrian Brain on Vertical scrolling app drawer on Samsung
…for Ted & Myriam Joire…
Personally I think it makes logical sense to swipe left & right in the app drawer, as that's what you do to swap between home screens, but…to get it up and down, install "Good Lock" from the Samsung Galaxy Store & then from within that install the module called "Home Up". Open up "Good Lock" again, go into "Home Up > Home screen" and toggle on "Apps List". Open the app drawer and Bob's your giddy Aunt, you can scroll up & down. Sort alphabetically or in custom order using the hamburger menu. Don't forget to explore other Good Lock options, there's loads of fun stuff there. The more the stuff is used, the more likely it is to get rolled into the base firmware.

My free Galaxy Buds Pro arrived yesterday. I tested them watching the WU Assassins on Netflix via the Roku remote app on my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. I thought they sounded a bit "thin".
Playing with the equaliser didn't make much difference. Then I remembered that the S22U has Dolby Atmos. This made a huge difference - the sound was perfectly adequate. However, when there were gaps in dialogue, the volume of the background sounds was low. It felt like the Atmos system disabled itself and they reverted to their, rather thin, output. As soon as the dialogue restarted the Atmos system kicked back in and raised the background volume and warmth. Moral of the story, you don’t get somethin’ for nuthin’ and at the very least, use Dolby!

Our Eufy (Anker) smart doorbell is set up for human detection. This means the only notifications we get are of people and nothing else. It detects faces and sends a notification with a thumbnail of the face. If it can’t see a face very well it may miss it. But this is the first time I've had a notification and it isn't a human face. It’s detected what looks like a face in the clouds. 😂😂

Tech Lust! This has to be the ultimate in Mobile Mifi Hotspots. Superfast 5G, Wifi 6. 13hr (removable!) battery life. Support for external antennas. Can be used as a router at home/office with ability for mains power with no battery charging. I think they thought of everything. But the price…£750 unlocked! I think I spotted an EE offer of £300 upfront and £60 a month. Gulp. Reviews from people with great 5G (e.g. central London, New York) say the performance is just stunning. They also do a range of 4G, 4G+ ones. All equally expensive - but then you are buying the Rolls Royce of hotspots!
Ian Barton on Prowlarr
Since we got Starlink with excellent download speeds it seemed a shame to waste it on just watching YouTube. Recently I built a new server using UNRAID which supports using Docker containers. Docker is a system of creating containers that are completely isolated from the main operating system but can communicate with other Docker containers and the underlying operating system. They are very easy to install and uninstall without leaving bits of themselves in the underlying operating system. I now use Prowlarr for downloading films, TV programmes, etc. to my server as Prowlarr is integrated into a system that makes it very easy to search various torrents and download files. You could use it to pirate films and TV, but you can eliminate the time-consuming task of ripping your DVD collection with Handbrake. You can feed all your download streams through a VPN making it almost impossible to track you. You can always buy the DVD from somewhere like Music Magpie to keep yourself legal. The system integrates well with Plex and Emby and if the Movie you want is available in various formats e.g. Blueray and DVD you can choose which version to search for and download.

Jeremy Harpham on his 5G Three Mobile Broadband Trial
Finally my area got 5G broadband from Three. I can currently get around 240Mb down and 70Mb up on 4G. The Three offer was £21 p.m. for unlimited data, including the 5G hub over 24 mths. A no-quibble 14 day return was what convinced me to try.
My trial lasted 6 hours! Despite trying multiple but limited positions in my study for the router I just couldn't get a consistent connection. I need the router to connect with my wired network so could not try other rooms. The Three hub only supports 24 devices for wi-fi which is useless, but typical. Speed varied from 0Mb both up and down to 210Mb down and 40 up.
The up was more variable. Down varied between 40-300Mb. The inconsistency was the killer. I'll try again in a year's time perhaps!

Kev Wright on my Ookla Speed Test Question
I don’t exactly know how to put this into words (or if I am even right!) but I think your mobile internet speed is kinda fixed based on the mast you are on at the time and is variable by a lot of different conditions like distance, and other people on the same mast.
I don’t think changing the server (even if you could) would matter as that would be overridden by the mast situation. I think the idea of having the ability to change it in Ookla is simply to allow you to get a test result if the default server is down or flooded.

Jon Satherley on Stadia
I’m a long-time listener - thank you for your musings, insight and humour each week.
I finally jumped onto Stadia a month or so back, when they were virtually giving them away at £20. Like Ted I am a very occasional gamer, being more prolific in my younger years with an Amiga 500. The largest barrier of modern gaming is the cost, not only of the hardware - but the games themselves. I suspect this is why retro-gaming is making such a comeback.
For £20 I appear to have high level graphics, most modern(ish) titles and an ability to play on multiple devices in my home - phone, laptop and TV. The regular sales for games make it more affordable - FIFA 22 recently just over £20 - as well as free games and trials.
This makes the casual gamer more than content. I agree with Ted that the variety and breath of games are somewhat lacking. Far too many 1st person shooters for example, but I guess this is where the market is currently. I for one hope it lives longer than some of Google's recent attempts at platforms and services!
Ian Barton on Air Rifles
I have got an air rifle which we use for controlling rats and squirrels around the farm.
You can buy them from several shops. You don't need a licence, but you must adhere to the various regulations (UK Airgun Laws). Punishment for not doing so is draconian. If you have a shotgun you will need a shotgun licence and if you want a rifle you need a firearms licence. Getting either of these licences is subject to a range of checks with the police and your GP. You will also need permissions for locations to use them e.g. vermin control needs the location to be vetted by the police or at a rifle range.

Ian Barton on Insta360 Go2
I have been trying to convince myself I don't need one of these but caved in over Christmas. I am now a convert. But… It's only got 32GB memory and video resolution maxes-out at 1440. However… Results look as good as my 4K GoPro. Image stabilization isn't as good as GoPro, but in most cases it’s OK. The app is versatile, but it takes some learning to get the best from it. The camera is waterproof. There are various accessories in the box… Charging case (which also acts like a micro-tripod). Magnet with a cord (so you can attach the camera on something like a shirt). Easy Clip mount (you could attach to a peaked hat). A pivot stand (you can attach to almost anything). I have an embarrassing number of action cameras but the USP with the Go2 is I can carry it all the time in a pocket. It's much better than my phone’s camera.

Ian Barton on Tailscale
If you have ever battled with the behemoth that is OpenVPN because you want to access your media server from outside your network you might want to try Tailscale. Tailscale is "A secure network that just works with Zero config VPN. Installs on any device in minutes, manages firewall rules for you, and works from anywhere " Tailscale is built around the Wireguard VPN, which runs on almost any platform and is now built into the Linux kernel. You can use the basic product to connect up to 20 devices for nothing.
I have it installed on my UNraid server which is running Tailscale inside a Docker container. Setting this up took all of 10 minutes. Next, I installed Tailscale on my Android phone and could use it to view my Emby media server via 4g. As it's a VPN all traffic between your computers is encrypted. There is an experimental MagicDNS that automatically registers DNS names for computers on your network, so you can use URLs that are easy to remember such as "mymediaserver" instead of having to remember its IP address. An additional plus point is that it somehow works on networks using CGNAT (mobile phones and Starlink) so you can access your phone from your computer via a web browser.
