Gareth Williams is In Love with Stadia! I now have 3 stadia Premier Editions. One for my girlfriend, one for my daughter and one for myself. I have set everybody up and done ‘family link’ to share any games I purchase. I have also taken up the Ubisoft subscription. We now have LAN gaming as well as all the benefits of the wider online community with a stack of games for all ages, abilities and tastes. Stadia has been a revelation in our house and has put an end to my Xbox hankerings. It really is (literally) wall to wall gaming here!
Pip Tomlinson on The End of the Sky Dish - Sky are launching “sky glass” a TV set with a sky set top box and soundbar effectively built in. You can choose between 3 sizes and pay extra monthly on top of your subscription for the tv. So basically they don’t need satellite dishes anymore as all the content will come through the internet. I’m not sure I’d be happy with my TV being made by Sky. What happens if you leave the contract? Does the TV become a brick?

Anyone got Windows 11 up and running?
Here's one about getting your Context Menu back via right-mouse... How to Get Full Context Menus in Windows 11 - Phillip Wray - From what I understand, developers can place things in the context menu but it's a new api for Windows 11, so in theory, as applications are updated, we should see items move back.
James Raeburn - Just updated my test box (NUC10i5) to it this morning and based on what I’ve seen so far I’m really liking it. Visually it’s a cross between Chrome OS, Windows with a dash of iOS. It’s still Windows at heart which is no bad thing. Things will settle down. Only issue so far is that Logitech K810 Bluetooth keyboard keeps thinking it’s American no matter what I set it to (UK QWERTY) in the regional settings.
Phillip Wray - All seems good here for me. Except I don't like what they have done with the task bar - no right click for task manager and no expandable icons. First thing I did was to put the windows button back on the left hand side!
James Raeburn - taskbar icons can’t be resized - a tad small for me. Maybe there’s a registry hack for that one. AMD Ryzen owners may want to hold off updating to Win 11, apparently there are performance issues. AMD Ryzen performance issues in Win 11 being worked on - CPU - News - HEXUS.net
Aidan Bell - My PC guru, who built my Ryzen machine, has just messaged me "What I'm hearing is it's very pretty but not overly practical. I have also read that amd can be reduced to 15%!! I'm in no rush to switch."

Evercade and Stadia update from Ted
Chad Dixon - Good show guys! A few questions for Gareth Myles… 1)Do you notice that using a Bluetooth games controller improves your reaction times than just playing on the phone screen? 2)What other benefits of using one do you think is worth mentioning? (I'm specifically thinking of first person shooter titles.) 3) Which compatible smartphone games controller would you recommend that's under £50?

Rob Brand
Ted discussed having difficulty opening and editing pdf files. Did you know that MS Word will open pdf files and try to convert them into an editable form which can be saved as a pdf or docx? The MS Office Android app has this capability as well. Also, if the pdf is on your Google drive then it can be opened with Google Docs. Though it’s not as good as MS Word, you can extract the text within the file and edit to your heart’s content.

Ian Barton on Unraid and Antec P101S Mid Tower Case
I have upgraded disk capacity a couple of times, which means I have several spare "smaller" drives of 2TB and 4TB. My current setup uses RAID1, which means I need two drives that are mirrored to avoid loss of data if one of them dies. Unraid uses a completely different system. There is one parity drive, which stores information that allows a crashed disk to be restored. You can then add as many other disks as you want, providing that each disk isn't larger than the parity disk. So if your largest drive is 8TB your parity drive needs to be at least 8TB. Unraid isn't free, but you can have a 30 day free trial. Cost is $59 for up to 6 attached disks. There is also support for docker containers and virtual machines. I have had a couple of Antec cases in the past. Unfortunately, they are so ancient they won't fit newer motherboards. Antec cases are well built and have several features e.g. rubber grommets to reduce noise from hard drives. However, the main region I want this case: you can install up to 11 storage drives! Reasons for this are explained in the next post about Unraid.

Chad Dixon Explaining IP/X Ratings

Feedback and Contributions:
Ian Watson on TV aerials - when digital took over, new aerials were needed as the frequency changed. (Richard Yates added: The UK switched off analogue transmissions in 2012.) Ideally, the aerial needs to be the same length as the wavelength for best possible reception. However, at many frequencies, the wavelength is extremely long, making it impractical to make aerials that are the full wavelength. FM radio for example, would need aerials of a little over three meters long. That would be difficult to mount on a car and would tend to hit things as the car drove down the road.
Also see Richard’s detailed and technical summary of thoughts on the topic in the MeWe Group

Ian Barton with a Starlink Update
After some experiments with positioning Dishy, I found that facing SW was giving me the most reliable signal. There are quite a few obstructions, so the view of the sky is a bit limited. However, Dishy is going to be moved to a chimney, which is about 10 metres above ground, this week. I am regularly getting download speeds of 150-200 Mbits. Yesterday the sky was completely covered with rain clouds and it was pouring with rain. I was getting download speeds of more than 200 Mbits. I have stopped using the supplied Starlink router. The cable is now connected to the WAN port of my Netgate firewall/router. The stats page of Starlink is on a separate network that is embedded in Dishy. So I have to create a firewall/NAT rule that can let me view the stats page on Dishy from my router.

Stroboscopes - All About Stroboscopes
A stroboscope is an instrument used to make a cyclically moving object appear to be slow-moving, or stationary. It consists of either a rotating disk with slots or holes or a lamp such as a flashtube which produces brief repetitive flashes of light. Usually, the rate of the stroboscope is adjustable to different frequencies. When a rotating or vibrating object is observed with the stroboscope at its vibration frequency (or a submultiple of it), it appears stationary. Thus stroboscopes are also used to measure frequency. The principle is used for the study of rotating, reciprocating, oscillating or vibrating objects. Machine parts and vibrating strings are common examples. A stroboscope used to set the ignition timing of internal combustion engines is called a timing light.
For Record Player Platters
The edge of the platter has marks at specific intervals so that when viewed under fluorescent lighting powered at mains frequency, provided the platter is rotating at the correct speed, the marks appear to be stationary. This will not work well under incandescent lighting, as incandescent bulbs don't significantly strobe. For this reason, some turntables have a neon bulb or LED next to the platter. The LED must be driven by a half wave rectifier from the mains transformer, or by an oscillator.
...you can also now get apps for smartphones which make use of the camera to clock the speed of rotation/movement.
You can also get stand-alone meters of course, mainly used in industry I guess, with readouts.

Xerxes Hodivala on High-Powered Chromebooks
In case anyone is after a high power Chromebook for a half reasonable price, I just bought a Lenovo C630 brand new for £599 from Lenovo direct. That price gets an 8th gen i7 (quad core, 8 threads), 16GB Ram, 128GB storage, and 15.6 inch 4K display. Updates are planned to continue until 2025 but I am confident that they will continue longer due to the Neverware acquisition.

Chris Kelly - Nearly £2.5k by the time you have added the optional rear speakers and sub. For that money you could buy a cinema amp and discrete speaker package that would deliver far better sound. It's one of those "you can't cheat physics" things, bigger boxes with greater physical separation will always win!
