The Town Whispers

On the Eve of Halloween, 14 storytellers make their way to the Darklight Carnival and share horrific tales of mystery and murder… but not all is as it seems.

This October 30th, the feed you’re listening to now, along with all other participating shows, will post two episodes simultaneously for Nine II Midnight. One episode will feature tales that are baked in reality with terrors that may be a part of our waking life. The other episode will share the horror of the most esoteric and spiritual side of the dark and terrifying.

NINE II MIDNIGHT is another collaborative storytelling event, and sequel to last year’s episode. Both episodes are comprised of stories written and produced by the Nine II Midnight participants:

Edward August Hall, as it so happens, has not seen it all. Paul Collins, and Garrett Franklin are at their wits end. Having stumbled through the ancient caverns and tunnels beneath The Fort, they seem no closer to finding their way out, or their purpose for being there in the first place. Plans have been laid by Mother Cyprian, with the help of Dr. Avery, but like all plans that have come before, they rarely go as planned.

Wood will rot or splinter, glass will shatter, metal will bend or break, and everything one day will return to the dust.

The world will one day return to dust, and the dead drying bones of a home, disconnected from the living dream of the world as they are, trimmed and snipped from the wilderness, sawed into lengths and shapes, hammered with iron fangs that bite until rust eventually comes to trim their length - WILL return much sooner.

The safety of a home is false comfort.

Dr. Avery and Mother Cyprian prepare as Paul and Garrett wander about beneath the waking earth of The Fort hopelessly lost. Why has Mother Cyprian thrown them into those labyrinthian tunnels? Why must they scurry about? What do they hope to achieve? Meanwhile, Ruth continues to worry herself sick over Paul's disappearance, but a visitor might shortly shed light.

Orla? Are you listening?

This is how it happened. 

You hung in the trees out of time. They sky was orange. The sky was blue shot through with pink. The sky was lush violet. It was black and speckled with pinprick stars. All around you, seething masses of shadows and roots, a coiling endless writhing black. For a time, you forgot your name. You forgot your life. You forgot that you had ever been a thing named Orla, and as payment for this forgetting you saw everything.

North of River Hollow, by the rocky cliffsides, there’s a blanket of dark trees. Thick trunks leading to twisting limbs that split into smaller branches. Probing roots curling into butter-black earth. Shrubs and matted grass carpet the forest floor, a silent battle for resources beneath the darkness of the canopy.

One plant thrives, here. The leaves of the red huckleberry are glossy and thin. Its red fruit is edible, skin meeting tender flesh with a pop and crunch of tiny seeds. The huckleberry is a plant that grows on top of decaying logs and stumps. But any gardener knows that it truly flourishes when feeding on rotting meat.
