The Trace

I spoke with Charliegrrl about her birth year of 1981.  We got into how horror films can be forms of catharsis and specifically getting into the wonderful and bizarre world of Andrei Zulawski’s Lovecraftian break up film.  We also talk Indiana Jones, growing up in small towns, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and hope for a multi-cultural America.  

This is a special edition of The Trace where I interract with audio from Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather”.  I look into the specific conditions that helped create Michael Corleone.  I get into questions of masculine identity in relation to mafia and capitalism and whether forgiveness and love are possible in environments where pride is the primary value.

My guest today is Claire Andrefsky.  She is a social worker at Seattle Children’s Hospital and we discuss some of the popular movies and culture from her birth year of 1990.  We talk about “Goodfellas” and the nature of American violence, “Edward Scissorhands” and the positive aspects of fantasy, and “Joe Versus the Volcano” and the reality of hope.  Claire also tells quite the story about ducks in her backyard and how that relates to our ability to adapt positively to life.

My guest today is Dan Thornton who is a professor of cinema.  We talk about his birth year of 1966 and films like "Persona", "The Good the Bad and the Ugly", and "Andrei Rublev".  These movies give us the opportunity to speak about identity, gender issues, and how we both fell in love with the big screen.

My guest today is Kyle Turver.  He is the worship director at Bethany Presbyterian Church in Queen Anne, Seattle.  We met a few years ago and have enjoyed insightful conversations on religion, politics, patriarchy and gender issues.  Today we talk about several films of 1984 including Footloose, The Terminator, The Karate Kid, A Nightmare on Elm Street, The NeverEnding Story, and Paris, Texas.  These films give us room to talk about many difficult issues facing the United States and Seattle-ites.  Although we do discuss religion I hope that all people will be able to enjoy the nuance of our talk.  The year is 1984, my guest is Kyle Turver.  I am Andrew Thomas Hackett.  This is The Trace.
