Every now and then in this business of content creation you meet someone who seems just too interesting to pass by.  Even though Joel Riddle isn’t currently a touring musician anymore, we felt his story and past was well worth an episode on the Troubadour.

As you’ll soon find out, Joel has done a lot in his life and is as outgoing as they come.  He’s an “idea guy” like me; always thinking about the next thing!

So, I hope you enjoy this episode featuring our new friend, Joel Riddle.

Today, Carly and I are thrilled to have on the show, a competitor on Season 20 of The Voice, a fellow Kansan and veteran singer-songwriter, Savanna Chestnut.

Her appearance on The Voice and getting chosen to be on Blake Shelton’s team obviously gained Savanna some recent notoriety. However, she’d already been at this music thing for quite some time before her appearance on that show was piped into television sets in homes all over the nation.

As you’ll hear in the interview, Savanna spent some time in Nashville making music and writing songs before ending up back in Kansas and now touring the Midwest relentlessly.

Savanna’s new video for her song “Marlboro Man” can be seen by clicking HERE.

Savanna does a good job at peeling back the onion quite a bit on how shows like The Voice work and I found all of that quite interesting.  I’ve got to admit, being a contestant on one of those shows actually sounds a little more stressful to me than I’d previously thought.  I know Covid played a part in Savanna’s experience on the show, but as you’ll hear, her and her fellow contestants spent a lot of time basically sequestered to their own hotel rooms for long periods of time.  I’m glad there are determined musicians like Savanna, who are willing to endure things like that so they can bring their music to the masses.

This was a good conversation and I’m glad we’re bringing it to you, our faithful listeners!  So, here’s comes our chat with fellow Kansan and a veteran singer-songwriter with a bright future, miss Savanna Chestnut!

Today we have a past guest joining us for another visit here on The Troubadour.  Kyle Park was featured as our guest in Episode #34 and he’s back with us today to talk about what he’s been up to since we caught up last time.

Kyle is a one of the most energetic artists out on the road today.  Everything he does, he does with gusto; from the way he tours and performs, clear down the speed he talks.  You can just tell this guy is chock-full of energy.

“Rewind”, his new single is currently #22 on the Texas Regional Radio Report Chart.  And he’s got a lot more music in the can and ready to go.

I honestly don’t know how Kyle finds time to do everything he does.  Kyle has recently even started a side project called The Texas Trio with fiddler Jason Roberts, who’s played with everyone from Asleep at the Wheel to Willie Nelson, and piano player John Michael Whitby who’s been a member of George Strait’s Ace in the Hole Band for the last 14 years.

Especially exciting for me and our Kansas listeners, Kyle will be playing in Courtland, KS this coming Saturday night for the 57th annual Courtland Funday.  There will be live music the entire day in the beer garden with Kyle headlining the street dance after the fireworks show around 10pm that night.  I’ll be sitting in as a hired gun that afternoon on the beer garden stage with the band Short Notice and another group including 3 of my best friends.   I’m sure it’s only a short drive from where ever you are, so come join me and party as we take in Kyle’s headlining show at the 57th annual Courtland Funday.

    Now, on to the interview!

As a fan of music in general I think it’s always a good practice to expand your horizons and step outside your comfort zone.  Even if a particular genre isn’t really my cup of tea, I always learn something by studying what is going on in other genres.  On today’s episode we do just that in our interview with an Austin, TX artist who has a huge cult following named Danny Kiranos who tours under the moniker, Amigo The Devil.

As you’ll hear in the interview Danny has had an interesting journey to become the artist he is today.  Danny went from a successful life as an honest to God, Master Brewer of craft beer to becoming a hugely popular one-man act with nothing more than banjo.

Amigo the Devil is pretty much the torch-bearer for the genre known as “murder-folk”.  His songs are witty and wry takes on some of the darkest parts of human life including murder and human suffering.

I really enjoyed our visit with Danny and found his life and the “murder-folk” side of things just down right interesting.  During the interview through zoom he even showed Carly and I some interesting pieces from his collection of oddities.

This was another fun interview and I really think you’ll enjoy Danny and our dive into a new genre of music here on the podcast.

Hey Troubadour faithful - Carly and I hope you had a great 4th of July weekend and thank you for allowing your humble hosts to have a week off to spend time with our friends and family.  And I’m sure our audio editor Sam, didn’t mind having a week off either!

We have another great episode for you today. I know it seems like I say that every week but I really am being honest every time I say it.

This week’s featured artist is truly a breath of fresh air and gives me hope for the future of country music.  If you’ve never heard of William Beckmann you are in for a real treat today.

Growing up in Del Rio and with musical aspirations, he was fortunate to meet the great Radney Foster while still in highschool.  He’s kept in touch with Radney and used him for guidance throughout his career.

Along with Radney, William has teamed up with one of our favorites here at The Troubaour, Randy Rogers who has also taken William under his wing to help further his career.

Personally I think there are big things in the future for this young and super-talented artist!

To find out more about William and his music along with his social media links go to www.williambeckmann.com  or better yet, just go to thetroubadourpodcast.com and click on the blog for this episode with links.

Imagine chasing your dream to be a songwriter and competing with all the other talent in a town like Nashville.  After years of playing the game and working on your craft, you feel beat down and wonder if you are ever going to have any success…  You finally reach a point where you are thinking very seriously about just walking away from it all…And then, you find out Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard have recorded on of your songs…That my friend’s is what you call validation at the highest level.

That’s the abridged version of what occurred for songwriter and artist, Ward Davis, who is our guest on today’s show.

This was a really great visit with Ward and I think you all will enjoy his openness and candor about his career and life in general.

I think we also make some history on today’s show.  I’m pretty sure we’ve never had to take a pause in the interview so the artist we’re interviewing could take a call from his realtor and find out that the offer he put it on a new home for he and his family has been accepted!  It was a pretty cool moment and you can really hear the excitement and relief in Ward’s voice after he got the out the news in the middle of recording this episode.  That’s what you call grade A audio content folks.

Monty Byrom has had a career in music that most only dream of.  He’s written hit songs for people like Eddie Money; his band, Big House experienced huge success in the late 1990s, cutting two records for MCA Nashville; and he called the late, great Buck Owens a friend, and even had a regular stint at fronting Buck’s band, The Buccaroos at the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield for a time.

He’s worked with all kinds of other great artists including Rita Coolidge, David Lee Roth, George Thorogood and even some in the Texas Country scene including Midnight River Choir.

Cameron Duddy of the Grammy Nominated band Midland is our guest today.  Midland burst onto the national county scene in 2016 with their debut single “Drinkin’ Problem” and by late 2018 had released my personal favorite Midland song “Burn Out”.

As you’ll hear in this interview, the trio of guys that make up the band Midland, took an unconventional path to stardom as a hugely successful band.  For example, before even forming Midland, Cameron was a hugely successful music video producer in L.A. having produced videos for all kinds of nationally known musical acts including producing all of Bruno Mars epic music videos.

We were thrilled to have Cameron on this episode and I think you’ll find it highly entreating!

  • BEN DANAHER

Welcome to episode #123 of The Troubadour.

Ben Danaher is a Nashville songwriter with Texas Roots.  Thanks to Carly and I’s mutual friend, Blake Chaffin, we were able to get Ben booked to be a guest on the show.

As you’ll hear in the interview, even though Ben really cut his teeth as an artist and songwriter in Texas, he was drawn to Nashville to try his hand as a singer-songwriter in Music City where he lives and works out of today.

Ben’s writing style is very much in my wheelhouse and if you like songs that can really hit you in the “feels”, Ben is your type of songwriter too.  Below are a couple of YouTube videos of Ben performing some of his tunes that I totally dig so I have to share them:

    JUST LIKE CHRISTMAS

    LOVE ALREADY KNOWS

Ben, spent a lot of his time prior to the pandemic touring as Aaron Lewis’ supporting act.

In January Ben started recording and working on a new project with another past guest on the podcast, Sean McConnell.  I’m super stoked to hear this record which is hopefully going to a fall release.

You can find out more about Ben by going to: http://www.bendanaher.com/.
