  • The Dyslexia Professor: Russell Van Brocklen on Why Your Child Isn't Broken—The System Is

Russell Van Brocklen is widely known as the Dyslexia Professor. He transforms daily reading struggles into confident academic breakthroughs for students with dyslexia . He is a New York State Senate‑funded dyslexia researcher and creator of The Writing Method, a neuroscience-based approach that helps struggling students become confident writers .

Dyslexia affects 15–20% of all learners, yet most families still hear "wait and see" . Russell flips that script. He translates structured literacy methods proven most effective for struggling readers into bite-size actions parents can use tonight .

His journey began with a first-grade reading and writing level at the end of university. He went on to dominate law school using the Socratic method, then returned to the New York State Senate to secure funding for dyslexia research .

    What makes this conversation different:

This isn't another "how to help your dyslexic child" episode. It's a conversation about why the system is broken, why dyslexic kids aren't the problem, and what actually works when you teach to their strengths instead of their weaknesses.

What we explore in this conversation:

    · How Russell went from a first-grade reading level to law school

    · Why traditional teaching methods fail dyslexic students

    · The neuroscience: why the back of the dyslexic brain has "next to nothing" while the front is 2.5x overactive

    · Why dyslexic learners are "specialists, not generalists"

    · The writing-first approach that helps students organize fast-moving ideas

    · Why you shouldn't give Michael Jordan a hockey stick—teaching to strengths, not weaknesses

    · How passion and specialization unlock learning

    · Practical strategies parents can use tonight

    · How Russell's free guide helps families get started

  • Katie Rizzo: The Trimesters of Grief—Finding Hope After Losing a Child to Addiction

Katie Rizzo is an author, educator, and "accidental poet" with a master's from Yale University and postgraduate medical studies from the University of Colorado School of Medicine . She taught high school biology and anatomy for over fifteen years . Her life was upended on September 17, 2024, when her firstborn son Nicholas died from an accidental overdose involving oxycodone and Xanax after years of struggling with addiction .

In the aftermath, she began journaling and, eventually, writing poetry—something she had never done before . She describes grief as a process that mirrors pregnancy: a first trimester of nausea and disorientation, a second trimester of numbness as the world moves on, and a third trimester where grief becomes visible and must be "delivered" . She was inspired by musician Nick Cave's essay on asking grief to sit beside you rather than fighting it .

    What makes this conversation different:

This isn't a "how to grieve" guide. It's a conversation about what happens when grief changes your body, your identity, and your way of seeing the world—and how creativity becomes a bridge between love and loss.

What we explore in this conversation:

    · Losing a child to addiction and the shame that surrounds it

    · The "Trimesters of Grief" framework—how grief mirrors pregnancy

    · Breaking the stigma: "My son is an addict and I love him"

    · How creativity and poetry became a lifeline

    · What Al-Anon taught her about the "three Cs": you didn't cause it, you can't cure it, you can't control it

    · Nick Cave's influence—asking grief to sit beside you

    · The physical toll of grief on the body (cardiovascular and nervous system)

    · How to support a grieving parent

    · Why community and connection are essential

    · The ongoing work of living with loss

  • How to Stop Drifting and Start Authoring Your Own Life – David Alan Brown

This conversation is for anyone who has ever felt like they're just going through the motions—and wondered how to find their way back to themselves.

David Alan Brown has been teaching personal empowerment, leadership, and spirituality to audiences across the country for more than thirty years . He is the author of many books, including Answer the Call and The Self-Help Paradox . But his journey wasn't always one of clarity and purpose.

For years, he was the "good guy"—the supportive partner, the present dad, the dependable friend—until one pandemic night he drove in circles, ideating, and realized he needed help . He had been living in functional depression, a kind of emotional numbness that had slowly eroded his sense of self . Therapy, awareness, and a surprising validation—"anger is the appropriate reaction here"—reopened his emotional life .

From there, David rebuilt with a simple framework: cultivate awareness, honor emotion (without judgment), and take aligned action . That framework became Convergence, his program for weaving three voices—instinct/emotion, active intellect, and a higher-power "I got you" presence—into one integrated way of living.

    In this episode, we explore:

🧠 The Three Inner Voices – David introduces the three voices that live inside each of us: the emotional/instinctual voice, the active/intellectual voice, and the inspired/spiritual voice. He explains why most people are unknowingly led by these voices rather than learning to lead them .

🔄 The Convergent Conversation – He shares his framework for integrating these three voices into a "committee meeting" that honors the needs, wants, and gifts of each voice. He explains how to move from autopilot to authorship—on purpose, one step at a time .

🛑 The "Good Guy" Identity Trap – David opens up about his personal journey of self-erasure—how being the supportive partner, dependable friend, and present dad led to a slow loss of self that eventually spiraled into suicidal ideation .

💡 The Gift Inside Every Emotion – He shares a powerful insight: "the gift of anger is motivation" . He explains how he learned to honor emotions without judgment and use them as fuel for aligned action.

🔮 Manifestation as Aligned Energy – David reframes manifestation as cultivating general aligned energy rather than chasing specific outcomes. He explains how his Convergent Energy approach differs from commercialized manifestation methods .

    What Listeners Gain:

    · A new understanding of the conversation happening inside your own mind

    · Practical tools for recognizing and regulating your three inner voices

    · Permission to honor emotions without being controlled by them

    · A framework for moving from drifting to authoring your own life

    · The reminder that the most important conversation you have is the one happening internally
