  • What Are You Chasing?

How can caring less lead to creating better content? What does abundance and joy have to do with a man burning alive? Joey and Jason talk this week about taking your mask off and shedding the unnecessary negative feedback that stops you enjoying life to it's fullest, or…not giving a *$%]

Priorities are always a subject of contention on this show, and a source of constant improvement for most people. It is a constant battle to balance your day to day desires for comfort and convenience with longer term goals like family and career. Going one level further means deciphering which one of those two takes precedence over the other. That is going to look different for most people, Joey and Jason talk about a 'desire map' exercise, as a means to figure out what yours might look like.

Joey tells a story about an 8th grade commencement speech he gave recently, and the porch beer philosophising that came after. His epiphany… stop chasing stuff, instead figure out why you want those things in the first place. Being in a place of abundance and joy is not intrinsically linked to being in a good place monetarily. The guys then talk about how addiction plays a role in this equation, it's also a useful study on the extremes of human desire. The catch 22 being that everyone thinks they want what people like Grant Cardone have, but most people are not willing to sacrifice what is required to get there.

The books referenced this week are 'It's not your money, How to Live Fully from Divine Abundance' by Tosha Silver and 'On Fire' by John O'Leary. Jason tells a nice story about how audiobooks can provide a great bonding experience for your family. Then Joey and Jason get back into debating the practical difference between wants and needs. Joey gives examples about his family's choice for a day by the pool instead of a day out, his need/constant in that instance is spending time with his family, His want/desire is to be at an awesome water park instead of his home. The guys spend some time extrapolating this idea.

Jason and Joey then Go deep. Do we live in a deterministic universe? How much do your choices really matter? Some very big questions for a podcast but the guys do actually make some headway and settle on the idea that the worst action you can take is procrastination. After a little reflection on their podcast journey Joey and Jason sign off for another episode. Grind On.

  • Are You a Good Leader? with Charlie Lawson

This week's guest on the grind is Charlie Lawson, Charlie is a long-time fan of the show and real estate business owner for over 12 years. He joins us on the show to discuss leadership in general and techniques to help you be a better leader. After introducing Charlie, the guys jump right into a discussion on the challenges that talent development can pose.

"Lead me, follow me or get the hell out of the way"

Joey Jason and Charlie all have differing reactions to the question, are you a good leader? Joey internalises the question and both Jason and Charlie respond by looking at external sources to gauge their progress. Charlie talks about avoiding being a bully when in a position of power and how important it is to keep those elements of yourself in check. Joey also poses the question are you a good leader, specifically in your family unit, he talks about how this microcosm of leadership can reflect on your ability to lead in other arenas.

Next the guys discuss how language is an underutilized tool for improving leadership, and how odd that is, when the notion of communication being paramount is as ubiquitous as it is. Being a good follower has a whole host of transferable skills that help your ability to lead and being able to switch roles when necessary can be extremely helpful, in not just management but recognizing talent as well.

"If all else fails, try doing what the captain told you to do".

Knowing when to call out bad ideas is a subtle art that Jason, Joey and Charlie share some ideas on. They then discuss a few final topics, such as, how to ensure that lines of communication say open, the appropriate attitude towards mistakes and disassociating your feelings towards people when engaging with them on a professional basis. And to finish up the guys talk about why you need to focus on being genuine and why really giving a shit is wholly underrated.

f you have enjoyed (or not enjoyed) this episode, Jason and Joey would be grateful if you would consider leaving a review on iTunes.

  • Let's Be Clear with Ed Eppley

This week's guest on The Grind is Ed Eppley. Ed is a global expert in professional management, sales strategy, and performance management. Acting as principal consultant for the Table Group, a Patrick Lencioni Company, and operator of The Eppley Group, his clients include a "Who's Who" of business category leaders such as BMW, Bloomberg, Battelle, DSW and Goodyear. As a facilitator of the Course for Presidents at Aileron in Tipp City, Ohio, Ed helps private business owners apply professional management disciplines to identify and correct workplace problems.

"A great talent developer needs to be willing to act with no promise of reward, but a great boss has some room to be an asshole"

Ed tells Joey about his life as an entrepreneur, how he filed his first tax return at thirteen, realised he was a bad employee at forty, but throughout was working on improving his entrepreneurial acumen and growing his business's. Ed explains to Joey how most entrepreneurs are always too static for the markets they work in, mainly due to what most people believe to be 'tried and tested' or 'proven' products or marketing strategies. Joey asks how you can alleviate this, and Ed points out that being more selective with your customers is one way, but there will always be a percentage of people who are just too inflexible. Joey and Ed also talk about balancing your company's survival with trying to not obsess over chasing profit.

Joey asks Ed what the number one pitfall for business's is in his experience. To which Ed talks about lack of focus and how companies almost always try to do too much, and often find themselves outside of their area of expertise. Some other questions that Joey asks are. What makes a great manager? How do strategies change as companies grow? Who should read 'Let's Be Clear'? and what lead Ed to write the book to begin with? Enjoy this interview with Ed Eppley and till next week, Grind On.

  • Namaste Mother F@$ker!

"Surrendering to life is easy when everything is going great".

This week on the Grind Joey and Jason continue the discussion about surrendering to life and the different approaches to achieving that end. But first Joey explains the meaning of 'Namaste' a phrase often banded around with no awareness of its deeper connotations. And one that Joey and Jason started using at Soul Degree, so Joey explains the context of its regular use.

"Get your likes and dislikes out of your own way".

Jason and Joey begin their conversation by talking about individual tolerances, when it comes to implementing a psychological method like 'surrendering to life'. Comparing the tangible results and difficulties with following through that can be experienced when starting out in different circumstances. Joey asks whether you can overcome absolute tragedy to reach a place of positivity and he mentions a tip from the illustrious Kendal Torkildson, where one can look at hardships as a test of your ability to roll with it.

"Time and again I was seeing that if I could handle the winds of the current storm, they would end up blowing in some great gift".

Jason begins to talk about how Extreme emotional states, whether positive or negative, can both display the same symptoms of hesitation, procrastination and self-doubt. The guys also make a point of explaining how letting go is a skill you can hone, and how you can improve through careful self-analysis. Like all the episodes of the Grind, Joey and Jason lace personal and insightful anecdotes throughout this episode, but as the subject matter gets deeper, these become more instrumental to why Joey and Jason are good communicators. Enjoy this week's episode, and Grind on.

If you have enjoyed (or not enjoyed) this episode, Jason and Joey would be grateful if you would consider leaving a review on iTunes.

  • Will the Grind Continue Its Journey?

This week, The Grind focuses on some existential questions in this episode as Joey and Jason contemplate the future of the podcast itself. The guys start off by talking about the general feasibility of podcasting as a money-making tool and whether or not Joey and Jason can see a path for The Grind to reach that goal. They also reflect on the fact that most small businesses don't make it 2 years, meaning it already has more longevity than most start-ups. Jason and Joey discuss how they have continued to learn by producing the show and they critique the lack of sufficient analytics on the medium to accurately assess your reach.

"No one is 100% all the time".

Joey mentions the guest for next week and the suspense diminishes slightly. Then Joey and Jason debate the impact they could have with proper time management and they discuss Joey's power-up as a case study for how easy it is to lose momentum with an endeavour. Jason asks if Joey feels his passion for the show has waned and the guys talk about how external factors can play a role in how you feel towards the things in your life.

"I don't think you ever told me you were in a band"!

Next, Joey briefly tells the saga of the band he used to play in 'Badger Hotel', so named after his company in the Army. The story is analogous to the story of The Grind in a lot of ways. The guys then talk about how it's hard to follow your own advice, but it's hard when it feels like you aren't making progress. Joey proposes that 'time on task' is all it would take to solve the issues they are having and Jason questions what that might look like. Jason also displays his mastery of the British accent and Joey admires his bicep. To finish up on whether the show goes on, the guys make a plan of action and decide to….well you'll just have to listen.

If you have enjoyed (or not enjoyed) this episode, Jason and Joey would be grateful if you would consider leaving a review on iTunes.

  • The Grind?

"Always use laughter, fun and humour daily, no matter what, don't take things to seriously".

This week on the Grind we join Joey amidst a week of no coffee, and a month of no social media. Joey is considering a name change for the podcast. The boys are also considering the meaning of 'the grind' itself. What is it? How often should you take breaks? And where are the areas in your life that you can't use 'The Grind' philosophy? These are questions Joey and Jason often consider on the podcast, but today they focus on why you should CHOOSE to enjoy life whenever possible and highlight to anyone who wasn't aware that it is indeed possible to do that.

"The Grind is good for business, but your business shouldn't rule your life"

After Joey's recent loss, time and making the most of life is at the forefront of the conversation for most of the episode. Joey and Jason orient their regular topics towards that paradigm, and it gives some useful additions to their commentaries. They guys are able to present some of the more complicated subjects they tackle in a binary form and help to boil the issues down to their components. Risk, loss, priorities and goals are the name of the game and like Joey says, we all have to figure those out for ourselves.

"sometimes you have to enjoy the fact that you don't know what you're doing".

Another important question the guys consider is whether or not they are hippies. A question that is becoming tougher to answer as the years progress and the lines between generations blur. After thinking on that for a bit Joey and Jason think about how often they take life to seriously and what people can do to avoid that scenario. Jason also goes further into the idea of surrendering, and he talks about more reasons why you need to tame the voice in your head. Joey explains the principles and mantras that he is using to remind himself of his themes on a daily basis. And he then explains why you need to have foundational principles to be successful in almost all endeavours.

If you have enjoyed (or not enjoyed) this episode, Jason and Joey would be grateful if you would consider leaving a review on iTunes.
