  • 3.2 – Drinking: A Question of Morality, Part II

Welcome back to part two and the finale of the New Age of Morality Act. An act that that attempted to make all the things that people thought wrong, things like drinking, drugs, gambling, and prostitution, right by banning them. But… that wasn’t quite how things worked out.

Instead, people turned on their new governments asking, if everyone’s still doing these things… then what, really, is the point?

And when it’s all over, there would be no coming back for President Margarita Santiago. No, third try is the charm. But, just because the Morality Act would be dead letter law, it didn’t mean it had fully gone away.

  • 3.1 – Drinking: A Question of Morality, Part I

Welcome back to the Unified Republic of Stars! This week, we discuss how the new Republic, under a new and the first post-revolution president, Margarita Santiago, decided to make the nation stronger by… cracking down on immoral acts.

Things like drinking, screwing, gambling, and doing drugs. Things that, up until now, had been left up to individuals to decide whether it was their thing or not.

    Things mentioned this episode:

    • Our old friend, Ivan Boldyrev
    • Penglai – where Santiago was from
    • Shaanxi – a neighbor planet to Penglai
    • The Fenghuang System – in which Penglai and Shaanxi are located
    • The Investigative Office of the Republic – The federal law enforcement agency
    • Al Gharbiyah & Columbus – because they like to take the fun out of everything.
    • President David Turecki – A president that basically made Italian-style politics look clean
    • And all of these topics culminate in the New Age of Morality Act. A relatively small piece of legislation that ended up pretty broad in scope. And it banned a lot of things.

Next week… we see how well all these new prohibitions worked out.

    • 3.0 – An Introduction To The Age of War

Yes… we’ve finally reached the Age of War, in which the Unified Republic of Stars has moved into a new age, an age of conflict. This season, we’ll be discussing mostly the internal conflicts that help to divide the Republic but also the big invasion that determines so much of what the Republic will do after, the Invasion of 2338.

This episode, I go into some of the differences that everyone should understand now exist between the Age of Colonization and the Age of War and get us prepared for the first major conflict of the new age, the Morality Act.

Some helpful links about places and companies that are mentioned:

      • Galileo Farm
      • Park Semiconductors
      • White Sand
      • Cobanito

      • 2.12 – Rivalries – The Island Group vs. Emre’s Paradise

I am super exited to end this season of the Unified Republic of Stars podcast with one more in the Rivalries series, The Island Group vs. Emre’s Paradise.

This week, we discuss one last settlement that, though there was a lot of land to settle in general, didn’t happen as smoothly as many of the things within the story world. And, in a large part, it’s because the Island Group felt that they could take advantage of Common Laws to screw the possibly more “savage” South Island People, living in a community they called “Emre’s Paradise”, out of their land because they hadn’t fenced it in.

But… just because people hadn’t built fences… it didn’t mean that they didn’t view it as theirs.

It’s a crazy story that takes place early in the colonization of Athena (map) that you should really check out because it shows just another way in which not all of the settlements within the colonies happened smoothly.

And it’s a nice little setup considering that this is the last of Season Two of this podcast. Coming back in Season Three, I will be discussing the events of the second age of the world, known as the Age of War.

So… after a two week break, I will be back and we’ll go over the events that define the next age of the story world.

      • 2.11 – Yamanashi & Kanagawa

Welcome back to the Unified Republic of Stars podcast! We’re getting close to the end of Season Two and moving into preparation for Season Three where we’ll be discussing the next book of history, the History of the Age of War. But… in the meantime, we still have two more things to discuss. This week, it’s the planets of Yamanashi and Kanagawa, the planets of the Japanese settled worlds of the New Nippon System.

We discuss how the worlds were established, what the Cherry Blossom and Mountaintop Seats are, the way the royals would inherit each as well as the ramifications of the revolution upon this process. Also, unlike the discussions of a lot of previous worlds within the, then, Colonial Star Cluster, we also discuss some of the native plant and animal life that exists on both worlds, for those of you who might be interested. And, I know for a fact, that more than a few of you are.

There’s also a mention of vertical gardens, a concept I’m sure I’ve brought up more than once when discussing Athena City but that I go over again here because it’s of particular importance to Kanagawa.

And, as I can’t help myself, I discuss the Japanese world’s importance on Colonial Baseball, both how they pre-date it and how they became a dominant force within it.

Next week, I look forward to the final episode in Season Two, in which I discuss the fun Rivalries Episode called Emre’s Paradise versus the Island Group.

      • 2.10 – Religion in the Colonies

Welcome back to the Unified Republic of Stars! This week, after many promises, Religion within the Colonial Star Cluster! What faiths made it out? How did they do? Where were many of them centered?

These questions and more are answered. As is a major one, how might beliefs change once living away from the human home world?

We discuss just about all of the major religions of Earth and their place out in the colonies but we also discuss a new one that starts on Earth but really finds its footing out in the colonies, the Church of the Cosmic Angel. A religion with… a different kind of origin story but one that literally attempts to wrangle with the cosmological ramifications of two galaxies colliding.

Also, perhaps much to your surprise, we discover that the Amish also made their way out to the colonies, congregating almost entirely on the Norman moon of Gelassenheit and we discuss how a sect so adverse to technology might make such a move.

      • 2.9 – Computing & Media

Welcome back to the Unified Republic of Stars! This week, we discuss computing and media in the Colonial Star Cluster, what it is how it got there, and what the intersection between the two were. Because, though the star cluster started out a rough place, it didn’t mean that people didn’t want or need entertainment.

And, in case you didn’t listen to the supplemental on communications, I highly recommend that you do, if for only at the very least to understand how the networks function out there.

Some of the topics we discuss include how a pornography company by the name of Pink Palace Films recruits a young tinkerer named Park Yoon Soo to create one of the first “pay per view” satellites in the colonies and how that revolutionizes the media landscape on all of the colonial worlds.

Of course Park would go on to create one of the largest electronic companies out in the colonies called PTPS Incorporated that would build a range of different things and generally go on to change the colonies through them if you’re interested in further reading.

We also discuss how the primary computing device people use isn’t something we’d generally think of as a computer… our phones.

Next week, religion within the star cluster! Finally!

      • 2.8 – Economics & The Colonial Dollar

Yes… I can hear people groaning… another episode around economics… but… this isn’t just about economics, its about how the early colonies not just persevered against an early crisis but eventually came to invent their own money. And this is the story of how people overcame one of the most devastating shortages an economy can have but actually came up with something new so they wouldn’t need the thing they were short on.

It’s a core story about how the Colonies became the wealthy place they did and wealth, let’s face it, is a large reason why Earth wasn’t so keen to give up on the Colonies and chose to continue fighting them instead.

If you haven’t already, please leave us a review on iTunes or Stitcher. It really helps people to find us.

      • 2.7 – Economics & Transportation

This week, we discuss the various methods of transportation around the Colonial Star Cluster.

How would you get around? Well… this is a sci-fi world so you’d probably take an interstellar vessel between worlds. After all, that’s how you’d get out there. But how would you get around a world? At first… by walking. But then by horse cart. But then… thing would get interesting. Eventually… cars would become common on the world, through companies like Kaesong Motors and Rayo Motors. Then, mag-lev trains connecting the cities would also become common.

Yes… technology moved quickly. Because this technology existed. It was just a matter of building the supply chains to make that technology out there rather than on Earth.

And all of this transportation helps to explain why the Colonial Star Cluster went from a place consisting of subsistence farmers and lumberjacks to prosperous colonies in such a short time.

Our theme was composed by Ryan Houser and our score by Darren Solomon.

      • 2.6 – Rivalries – Tranquility vs. Meditation

Welcome back to the Unified Republic of Stars podcast. This week, perhaps the last in our rivalries series, the Norman communities of Tranquility vs. Meditation, two towns that stood for very distinct things that had the unfortunate time and place to be who they were next to one another.

Listener warning, this week’s episode includes some very violent content and one very explicit word.

We’ve talked a lot in the podcast so far about towns and communities that have succeeded, even grown into proper cities. But… not all of these experiments in a better way for people to live succeeded. Some failed. Some succeeded. But almost all of those found that they had to change the very idea upon which they were founded in order to succeed. But Tranquility and Meditation never had the chance to do that before they exploded in a spectacular fashion like so few other places did. And that’s what we’ll be discussing this week.

Yes, even in the Unified Republic of Stars, there were failures. More than a few actually. But this was among the worst.

However, as kind of an upside, the distillers of Norman Whiskey claim the former inhabitants of these communities as the ones who introduced the world to their special brand of the spirit. Whether that’s true or not… is a matter of some discussion.

Our theme is by Ryan Houser and our score is by Darren Solomon.

Next week, we’ll discuss various forms of transportation within the star cluster. It’s going to be fun!
