The Unified Republic of Stars - A Sci-Fi World Building Podcast episodes

  • Supplemental – Cheap Energy

    Our first supplemental episode. Energy!

Taking a break from the reading of A Short History of the Unified Republic of Stars to discuss something that hasn’t been covered much but is key to understanding how many of the things within the story world work: The ion-plasma power plant.

It’s mentioned in Chapter One as the source that the new breed of space vehicles are based on, something that creates an enormous amount of energy on a low amount of fuel and within a relatively small package.

But how did this thing come into existence and what, exactly, is it?

As usual, here are some links to things mentioned within today’s cast:

    • Lynn Monjo – The power plant’s inventor.
    • The Ion-Plasma power plant – the magical device that powers just about everything within the world.
    • Alcubierre Fields – The form of faster than light travel used within the story world.
    • I hope you enjoyed this supplemental. There will be a few more coming in the next few weeks. But if you have questions and comments about anything that’s been covered, email me at urspodcast at gmail dot com and I’ll either get you on the cast or read your feedback on air.

    • 1.3 – A Short History – Colonization

Welcome back to the Unified Republic of Stars Podcast. This week, I’ll be reading Chapter 3 of A Short History of the Unified Republic of Stars titled, “Colonization.”

But, first, this week’s Story Generator suggestion: “A boy (15) is on a stolen cargo ship headed toward Al Gharbiyah when a little boy says he needs someone with a gun to solve his problems.”

Some links to reference material from this week’s podcast. As always, the reference section is there to provide listeners not just with additional supplementary material but to help spark ideas or artwork inspired by the story world.

A lot of the podcast focuses on the colonization of these worlds:

      • Al Gharbiyah – A desert planet on which groups of Muslims and Jews settled.
      • Athena – A water planet on which Athena City was built.
      • Columbus – A “lawn” planet primarily settled by conservative Christian Americans.
      • Galileo – A prairie world primarily settled by Americans, Chinese, and Russians
      • Troy – A forest world with a thriving logging industry.
      • Yong Nam – The North Korean colony.
      • Additionally, the foundation of Republican Baseball, “Colonial Baseball” in the era being discussed, was described. If you’re interested in finding out some more about this baseball league, be sure to check out the Baseball category over in the reference section.

As always, you can contact me at urspodcast at gmail dot com if you have questions or comments. Be sure to add whether you’d like to appear on the cast itself.

      • 1.2 – A Short History – Exploration

Three episodes down, only about infinity left to go.

Your weekly dose of story writing inspiration from that crazy device I call, the Story Generator: “A woman (21) from Troy has tracked her ex-lover to New Normandy when her secret identity as an Authority agent risks begins exposed.”

As always, I encourage everyone with creative leanings who enjoys this podcast to get involved by adopting a topic or an idea and either writing about it, with it, or, if you’re not a writer, creating something around something that inspires you within the world.

Chapter Two of A Short History of the Unified Republic of Stars is primarily a story about Jimmy Erlewine and his team of scientists exploring the planet they dub Galileo.

      • 1.1 – A Short History – The New Space Race

And… we’re back! Episode 1.1, A Short History of the Unified Republic of Stars, Chapter 1.

But first, in order to help whet your appetites for creation, the latest from the almost psychopathic Story Generator, “A woman (37) finally has the perfect job at Rayo in College Park when she’s accused of a murder she didn’t commit.”

Anyone can generate plots and turn them into the stories they think they should be. Think about writing one yourself over lunch. I always welcome new stories for publication on the site.

As I mentioned in the introduction, I skipped the introduction to A Short History of the Unified Republic of Stars. This is mostly because the history was written to sound like a pseudo-history book and it contains a lot of grand pronouncements and a thesis that might sound strange to people unfamiliar with the story world. As such, I cut it. However, for those that are interested to read it, feel free.

Now, some links to people and things mentioned in this week’s podcast:

        • Lynn Monjo – The inventor of the Ion-Plasma power plant.
        • The major space vehicle manufacturers:

          • Sanctuary Space Vehicle Corporation
          • Rayo Space Adventure Company
          • Nakimora Holding Company
          • Manchester Partners
          • Some early model ships:

            • Sanctuary Model V
            • Manchester Partners MP2
            • Rayo Tiger
            • Airbus AX-2250
            • Next week, I’ll be reading Chapter 2, titled Exploration.

I hope you’re enjoying what we’re doing with the cast so far. However, if you have questions or comments, please always feel free to email me at urspodcast at gmail dot com and I’ll either read your questions and comments or work to get you on the show so you can ask the questions or speak your mind yourself.

            • 1.0 – An Introduction

Welcome to the introductory episode of the new Unified Republic of Stars podcast.

I’m kicking things off this week with a brief explanation of what the hell the Unified Republic of Stars is, why I’m doing the cast, and ways in which people can get involved.

But… here are the links to some of the tools I mention:

              • Story Generator – Our bizzare little tool to help come up with story ideas set in the world.
              • Interactive Timeline – So you know when some major events happen.
              • Planetary Travel Times – So you know roughly how long it takes to get from point A to point B.
              • Starting next week, I’ll begin with Chapter 1 of A Short History of the Unified Republic of Stars. Naturally, you’re more than welcome to read ahead but be sure to get the latest episodes for more in depth discussions on topics that the history book might rush over.

Also, if you have feedback, questions, or comments you’re always welcome to send them to urspodcast at gmail dot com. Questions and comments will be read on the air. Or, if you’d like to be on the cast yourself, add a note in your email and I’ll figure out a way to get you on.
