In our new series we feature three special episodes that all took place in Steamboat Springs Colorado during the inaugural SBT GRVL event. During the event, we partnered with Chamois Butt’r and chatted with three of the participants. We boarded the Chamois Butt’r Jeep and drove the scenic terrain of Steamboat Springs while getting to know the riders.

In our last episode we chat with Amity Rockwell. While new to the gravel scene, she has made her presence known winning Dirty Kanza 200. She resides in Truckee California, but originally is from San Francisco. Originally a road cyclist, she has found success in gravel cycling and is now pursuing a full time career in the sport. She loves long hard races and rides of attrition and is game to be at just about every gravel event. Amity is a former ultra runner turned barista and now cyclist for brands such as Allied Cycle works and Easton Sports.

Amity embodies the healthy lifestyle and can be found frequenting farmers markets, cooking healthy meals from scratch and grew up as a vegetarian.

Also on the show we recap Grinduro as an epic and monumental event. The conditions featured every type of weather in one day. The event continues to grow and evolve and participants love the timed segment format.

We also read a letter from Arne Hulstein who is an expert on the Dutch reach. Hailing from the Netherlands he breaks down the technique for American’s and other countries to hopefully adopt.

As the offseason approaches, there are a lot of events to do. We talk about the Sagan Grand Roadie Oh and the Circle of doom both taking place in Southern California.

In our next episode we chat with Sarah Sturm. While new to the gravel scene, she has made her presence known winning her first event, the Belgian Waffle Ride. She resides in Durango Colorado, a hotbed for mountain biking and outdoor activities. Sarah splits her time between cycling and working as a graphic designer for several brands including a wine brand and cannabis company.

Athletically, Sarah started out in high school playing soccer, running and swimming. By the time she went to college at Fort Lewis College in Durango, she had joined the Triathlete squad and then transitioned to road cycling. Eventually Sarah found she had a knack for cyclocross where she competed at high level before gravel.

Off the bike, Sarah likes to do things in her own way and on her own terms. She is unapologetically in it for the fun and does not conform to any cycling stereotypes. She rides hard on long and on those long days, she thinks about everything and nothing. Sarah has found a place in long grueling events and there are no signs of her slowing down. The day after we recorded, she rode to an impressive third place at the SBT GRVL race behind two seasoned pros. What is striking is Sarah’s positivity and her endless energy and laughter. Your day is about to get a whole lot better once you listen to Sarah!

In our first episode we talk with Gravel Cycling veteran Yuri Hauswald. He talks about gravel cyclings evolution in it’s short time span and some of the things he sees the sport is doing that you can’t find in other disciplines. Yuri talks about having a full time job for GU in Berkeley California while traveling all over the world and spending many days in his van going to gravel events.

Yuri was raised on a farm in Petaluma and attributes his success to his parents hard work ethic as well as his sense of adventure. He has positioned himself to still be competitive with people much younger than him and also giving back to the sport of cycling. Yuri talks about the community of gravel cycling as well as how rewarding it can be. Stay tuned in the future as Yuri’s name could very well be a verb in cycling!

In this weeks episode we cover the need to take oneself out of your comfort zone on the bike. I am doing my first gravel race. Something that is going to push me to my limit and in ways that I haven’t been tested before. It’s important to be mindful of doing things to make yourself uncomfortable in order to improve. I’m trying intermittent fasting, fasted training and being more disciplined.

In our second and final episode covering Dirty Kanza we cover all of the action from start to finish. It is fitting that we start out talking to Colin Strickland on the eve of the ride about his strategy and plans on using aero bars. The next morning we head to the start of the race and talk to some of the riders just before the sun comes up. Some of the riders such as Ted King talk about his nervousness as he preps for a long day ahead. Throughout the race we give live updates and leapfrog the riders as we try to head back to the finish to see the riders coming in.

When we get to the finish, the riders are exhausted, wiping themselves off, drinking a cold beverage all while trying to answer questions from the press. We speak to many of the top ten finishers of Dirty Kanza including Peter Stetina, Kiel Reijnen, Joshua Berry, Alex Howes, Lachlan Morton and Taylor Phinney. For the women’s podium we speak with Alison Tetrick, Sarah Max and winner Amity Rockwell. Finally we capture the closing thoughts of everyone in the IRC crew who spent the day chasing, shooting photos and even fixing a flat tire in our car!

There are cycling events and then there is Dirty Kanza. Started a decade ago it has become quite simply the largest gravel event in the world. Emporia Kansas is host to thousands of cyclists, support staff, industry and media. We covered the event on site and are pleased to bring you the first of two episodes covering the weekend.

In this episode, we talk to the race director Leland about what this event means for cycling. We speak with an Emporia local on how this event has changed over the years and how cyclists are treated by motorists in Kansas. We hang out in the IRC Pop Up shop and sit down with pro riders Eric Marcotte and Sarah Max. Finally we get to host the live “Tire Therapy” talk with guests Jake Wells and Adam Mills.

The Amgen Tour of California is the largest professional bicycle race held in North America. For 2019 the route started in Sacramento and headed it’s way south finishing in Pasadena at the Rose Bowl. It was a race that featured many climbs including Rancho Cordova to South Lake Tahoe and the infamous Ontario to Mt. Baldy Stage. New for this year featured three stages for the women which included a start in Ventura county, Mt. Baldy and Pasadena stages. Absent this year was a time trial that frustrated the specialists but favored the pure climbers. This race may be known for showcasing the young riders as the last two versions have seen winners from Egan Bernal in 2018 and now Tadej Pojacar who at 20 years old is the youngest rider to win a UCI stage race.
