The Amgen Tour of California is hands down the biggest cycling race in the United States. The top riders from around the world come to California to test their skills against the worlds best. This year the race started in Long Beach and made it’s way North to finish in Sacramento. We were there for the first two stages and covered all the action before during and after each stage. We were granted access to get up close and personal with the top riders of the sport.

• The start and finish of Stage 1 was in Long Beach that was home to a flat circuit race. It is meant to be great for spectators but not establishing the main GC standings. This stage is the backdrop to see the worlds best sprinters go against each other in one of the most anticipated lineups to date. Colombian Fernando Gaviria narrowly took the win against Australian sprint Phenom Caleb Ewan.

• We spoke with some of the riders about their expectations of the race and most were rested and ready to go. We even got to talk with some of them about their favorite foods as well as what they ate for breakfast. Some of their answers were very interesting.

• Stage 2 went from Ventura to Santa Barbara and finished up the grueling Gibraltar climb. For many riders it was a case of survival and for only a few they were hoping for an overall result. While Egan Bernal showed his real strength, other riders like Peter Stetina and Brent Bookwalter really struggled to stay at the front and got into the red.

The atmosphere at the races was a bit of controlled chaos. Once the riders finished a stage, it becomes a mad scramble for media to see if riders could give their thoughts. It was a traveling circus of sorts and one that we were happy to be a part of. We talked with some of the best riders in the world and some future stars as well. If you follow professional level racing or want to, this is the episode for you!

Cycling season is in full swing, and summer is just around the corner. Warmer temps, longer days and cycling events each weekend lead to more and more time on the bike. We journey to Monterrey California and check out the Sea Otter Classic. Sea Otter is a multi day bike event with competitive cycling that spans from mountain to road to everything in between. Sea Otter is also known for it’s massive industry expo at the Laguna Seca Raceway. It is there that many brands get to showcase their latest and greatest products for the upcoming season. We pounded the pavement and talked to many of these brands and see what they had this year. Here are a few of some of the things we saw at Sea Otter.

* Goodyear tires is a name known in automobiles and they have made an investment in cycling tires. Notably tires 25c and above on just about every discipline. Luke Musselman talks about some of the latest tires in their line.

* In one of our favorite companies, Jake Pantone from Enve composites talks about how they are leading the way with some of their off road options. They have a unique through axle skewers for their forks and a surefire way to keep things secure.

* Taylor from DT Swiss talks about some of their new gravel and cyclocross wheels. I’ve owned their hubs for years and he has shown me a tool less way to remove a cassette and hub internals. That way you just need a finger and some grease to keep it running smooth.

* K-edge might be some of the smaller bike accessory pieces but they collaborated with Wahoo Bolt. Tim Kelly, the brand manager at K-edge came up with an aero and clean interface for the Wahoo bolt computers. It coincidentally was the same one that a certain Peter Sagan used as he won Paris Roubaix.

* Jesse Bartholemew with Quarq has a new way to monitor your tire pressure in real time. It’s a sensor that sits on the valve core and senses tire pressure as the rider uses the bike. It’s a great tool for people obsessed with wanting to know additional metrics on their computers. They will start pricing at $200.

* SCC alumni Priscilla Savord now represents Fizik. In addition to some of their saddles they are venturing into some new aspects of the game with updated road and mountain shoes. Priscilla was found at Sea Otter dropping some knowledge and giving out espresso’s simultaneously!

* IRC tires has made a big investment into cycling in the United States. Bruno Suttles has ridden some great tires specifically made for events like BWR. They have a file tread with knobby edges and they run tubeless. The company has a huge following in SoCal.

* Giant is one of the bigger brands at Sea Otter and Andrew Juskaidas of Giant talks to us as he teases out some of the bigger things coming in just a few short months. He remains tight lipped but you know when Giant teases something, it’s going to be big!

* Red Shift Sports from Nor Cal has found an interesting take on suspension. They came up with suspension seat posts and stems that have a little bit of give on both ends of the bike. Stephen Anhert explains how these work and also how their kickstarter campaign is going on some of the products. It has wide applications across many cycling disciplines.

* Jason Prescott from Oakley has two new offerings in the brands iconic eyewear line.

Welcome to the gravel era. What does that mean for cycling? Simply put it means that cycling is going to get more and more popular. Lets examine some of the reasons why. It provides a bit of a safer surface to ride on since many road cyclists are hesitant to ride in traffic. It also provides an off road option for people who want to challenge themselves on a little bit of dirt. The camaraderie found in people who choose to do gravel is much more accepting and more of a casual but go hard feel. Bike technology has helped create a market for people to get on gravel and find just the right equipment to do it. Lastly events like the Canyon Belgian Waffle Ride has brought in people in droves to some of the most unique and fun cycling events in the country.

We cover the 2018 iteration of the Belgian Waffle Ride and this year it did not disappoint. It started with a two day expo at the newly opened Canyon USA headquarters in Carlsbad California. There they had music, food, games, industry expo and a course reveal of the most unique one day cycling event in the country.

Dave Malwitz of Gravelstoke joins us to give his perspective of the gravel phenomenon and his BWR insights. After some listener mail referencing The Resurrection of CBR episode we talk about some of the people we interviewed for the race. During the expo event the day before the event we talk to Ryan Steers of Giant Bicycles to talk about some of his preface form.

During the morning of the race, which was delayed for about 30 minutes due to high demand of waffles we catch up with a few people during their pre race routine. We first get together with Brian McCulloch of Elevate KHS and he talks about his form going in to the start. He remained optimistic as he does with just about everything. After that we hit up the waffle line and catch up with Chris Guillemet who is the CEO of Velofix (also show sponsor) and talks about his pre race feelings.

Jake Wells has a cyclocross background and has never done the event before. He came to podium or better and we caught up with him at the infamous bathroom line to hear how he was going to have the race unfold for him. He has the technical skills as well as the engine to do well. The defending women’s champ, Larissa Connors is always quotable and she is one of the few who is wide awake at the start and gives us her rundown of the day. Lastly Los Angeles based rider Diego Binatena of Los Angeles Bicycle Club and Base Cartel brings his road experience and team to the BWR. He goes all in with a race plan to execute a winning move that may happen. One of the people with the most experience yet not going for the overall is retired pro Tom Danielson. Now a coach, he comes into the race as a mentor but draws on some of the unique comparisons between this event and races he’s done in Europe.

Once the race is off it unfolds and the final kms come down to a test of will between Ted King and Brian McCulloch. Ted was unable to come around Brian in the last corner as we get post race reactions from all of the top finishers including in the top five, Bryan Lewis (formerly of Cyclance) and Colin Strickland who is a fixture in the criterium and red hook races.

Just about every major city and state has a local race series. These are the backbone of grassroots competitive cycling. Just about every professional cyclist today has had their trajectory rooted in local, consistent competitive cycling.

Southern California has been hit hard with a lot of USAC races being cancelled. There have been alternatives such as HUNKR, Spndx Stampede, Gravel events like BWR and Gran Fondos. There is still a small light that shines brightly on SoCal racing. California Bicycle Racing or CBR is experiencing a renaissance of sorts where other races are failing. It is a simple format. Two courses with four corners in an industrial park. Although the course, format and race has not changed, there has been a big change when it comes to attracting more people.

Jeff Prinz is charged with revitalizing the series and his participation numbers have been blowing up. A former racer himself, he impressively shot up from a Cat 5 to a Cat 1 in one season. He sees the value of competitive racing and he is working hard in addition to his full time job as a teacher to bring the experience of a family friendly atmosphere to Southern California Racing.

In earlier CBR races before Jeff, there were fights in the parking lot, people being way too aggressive after races and angry and overworked race promoters. It left much to be desired for people who spend more time in their cars than the actual racing often risking severe injury all while having to go to a job on Monday. Jeff has acknowledged all of these things take away from people wanting to spend a day at the races. He’s changed a lot including, food trucks, barriers, an inflatable banner and most importantly an introductory program that fosters beginner racers. The results show that the Cat 5 and beginner racing programs are selling out mid week, more people are showing up to the races including spouses, children and making it more of a fun atmosphere.

Jeff has worked hard to bring in more sponsors, more prize money all while keeping the entry fee’s the same for almost twenty years. While he acknowledges racing is facing an uphill battle with an overall decline in racing, he is defying the odds by making the race experience as fun and exciting as possible.

Over the years, the CBR series has seen thousands of racers some of whom now make a living racing a bicycle. They owe a lot of their skills and success to the CBR series and it is the most competitive criterium series in the country. If you’ve ever done this series before, you might relate to some of the topics discussed. If you’ve never raced a criterium there is no better way to get into it. Check out the CBR race series and pin a number on. This is a staple of Southern California and Jeff and his perspective breathes new light into bike racing. Do not miss this episode!

Power meters, high end bottom brackets and pulleys, bike racks and chain wax are a few of our favorite things. Not only do we get to use them but we get to talk to the people behind these products. We are joined in studio by Ryan Dahl of Wend Wax who doubles as co host for the episode. Ryan is one of the few cyclists who has been racing since childhood, one of the original Swamis Team members, California State CX Champion and all around hard man. He created Wend Wax with the simple idea that drivetrains can last longer and run smoother with wax instead of traditional liquid based lubes. He knows a thing or two about wax since his family started Wax Research which is the home of the world famous Sticky Bumps surf wax. He talks about some of the more interesting ways to apply the wax and why it is the superior choice when it comes to drivetrains.

We then move to power meters. It is a piece of tech not reserved for the pros anymore as they can be found on most serious cyclists bikes. Jim Miller of Pioneer power meters talks about the nexus of how they came to be and all of the interesting thing that Pioneer has done as a brand and a bit about their technology. It’s one of the most recognizable power meters on the market as it can be seen with a well angled television camera.

Ard Kessels is the brainchild behind Kogel Bearings. Kogel makes bottom brackets as well as pulleys. Kogel is touted as Bad Ass Bottom Brackets and he has brought the stream of consciousness of small moving parts on a bike to the forefront. His passion and unique marketing strategy has put Kogel out there as one of the most sought after pieces of tech. Kogel sponsors many top riders including the UHC Professional team and he continues to refine and develop the technology all to have the rider save a few watts and maybe own the next Strava segment.

The technology for bicycle racks has largely remained unchanged for the last few years. Chuck from Seasucker racks has changed the game. His portable, suction mount based racks are taking the world by storm and can be seen from local bike shops to the world tour level. The rack can fit nearly anywhere on a vehicle thanks to it’s large suction cups that you pump for a secure fit. You can trust your expensive rig will not be going anywhere. We caught up with him at last years Tour of California.

With so many beverage options out there for cyclists, who has time for water? It’s taking a back seat to a wide range of choices. On the latest episode of the SCC podcast we take a close look at three that seem to have a big cycling following. We start with craft coffee, hydration and lastly beer. We talk about the attraction, appeal and dispel a bit of myth.

When cyclists first get ready to race or head out on the big weekend ride, coffee seems to be the go to beverage of choice. With dozens of choices and as many coffee shops around, it can be an overwhelming task. Ryan and Billy, cyclists who started a craft coffee company with delivery and subscription service in mind. We sample nitro coffee as well as aero press and talk about some of the physiological and psychological advantages to getting that morning cup of joe. This isn’t your fathers Sanka anymore. Coffee and cycling have a long lasting relationship.

Usually after or during a ride, cyclists usually have some kind of sports hydration, recovery drink or juice. The people at Mode nutrition talk about some of the benefits of drinking juice that comes from natural and pure ingredients. Aasha Marler and Tammo Walter talk about how they got their start in a highly competitive market and how their products work. We also talk about the cyclists ability to sometimes have to adapt to their surroundings and what to do on race day when they don’t necessarily have all their nutritional tools at their disposal. Lastly we get into some of their guilty food pleasures just to show that everything is ok in moderation including bacon and donuts.

Lastly, many cyclists like to reminisce about an epic ride with an ice cold beer. Rawley Macias of Rouleur brewery is an engineer, cyclists beer lover and brewer. He’s found a way to build a cycling themed brewery and combine all those passions into one. Rouleur has made it to the one year mark and has succeeded where other breweries have failed through being embraced by the cycling community, have an aggressive marketing model and of course brewing some unique and top notch beers. We sit down on location and talk about where he has been and how his brewery has served as the unofficial gathering for cyclists not only loving beer but meeting up for group rides and fun events. The future is expansion and we’ll see how Rouleur can take things to the next level.

Unfortunately water seems to be less and less prominent as these beverage choices are coming into the spotlight. Water used to be the go to that every nutritionist was screaming we needed 8 glasses of but with so many other options, we’ll have to see what happens. The Belgian Waffle Ride is one of the biggest one day races in North America and it’s right in our backyard! In an era where races are hurting for membership, the Belgian Waffle Ride sells out quickly. The draw is the entire unique experience. You take over a thousand racers, lots of volunteers, a course with dirt, road and elevation and lots of beer and music at the end and you have it. We sit down with Adam Mills in studio and talk about coaching people for the event as well as the training camps that Source Endurance puts on for the event. People spend a year prepping and planning for this day. There is a lot that a rider will go through and the goal is to prep them for anything that can happen.

With the most recent event filled with action, we went behind the scenes and inside the race and talked to many of the participants and got their perspective of the event. First we talk with race announcer Jim Miller as we get a surprise mid interview and he gives me his race predictions for the day. No BWR event is complete without talking to the father of the event Michael Marcx. This year he didn’t race it so it’s nice to get his perspective from the race organization standpoint.

We talk with defending champ Joshua Berry of the Jelly Belly squad on how he faired this year and what hiccups he ran into. We talk with the eventual winners of the event Jesse Anthony and Larissa Connors and even though they make it look easy, they were just as tired as well but happy. No big bike event is without a few retired pros. We talk with Phil Gaimon and how he took off so fast at the start and was able to hold off the entire field just for a little while. We also talk with last years defending champion Amanda Nauman and why she was ready to quit but didn’t on the last big climb. Lastly we speak with Ted King and how events like these are good for cycling and their growth.

The BWR is no longer a local event. With seasoned professionals coming in and competing and people going to camps to try to improve their personal bests, BWR has something for everyone. What does it mean to be a sponsored cyclist? We tackle the question on this episode of the Velo Worthy podcast. We sit down with Sonja Johnson of Sram and Jessica Rocheleau who is prepping for the Haute Route as we start dissecting the meaning of being a non professional cyclist who seeks out sponsorships. We first talk to some big industry professionals and ask them the tough question of “What was the last thing you bought cycling related and paid full retail?” The answers may surprise you.

After that we examine the thoughts of the various industry behemoths on looking at the side of amateur sponsorship as opposed to pro sponsorship. The takeaways are: 1. Any amateur who can influence other people and represent brands should be sponsored. 2. Local race results do not matter and do not justify free stuff. 3. Brands are still driving consumers to purchase from local bike shops and local businesses. 4. Social Media presence is real and is important.

We then talk to Ard Kessels of Kogel bearings. He explains how many sponsorships he gets per week and how he decides weather someone or not would be a good representative of his brand. People who are entitled or think they deserve something for nothing are automatically out. People who can influence their friends to try out products they are excited about are in. Plus if you are Beyonce’ that does not hurt either.

Lastly, Ben Jacques Maynes, retired pro talks about while he grew up racing and how things have changed. In essence, everybody wants a discount and when they don’t they feel hurt and when they do they fell special. Everyone wants to feel like they are being taken care of and will remember the moment when they are not.
