In 2014, Judge Kate O'Regan and Advocate Vusi Pikoli chaired a commission of inquiry into policing in Khayelitsha. The inquiry made some headway into implementing the 20 recommendations submitted after its conclusion, but residents living in Khayelitsha said they were far from being any safer.
The systemic failures addressed by the Commission include the failure of the police and other criminal justice actors to police, investigate and convict perpetrators of violence within our communities.
Seven years down the line, how far are we with the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations?

Growing up in Atteridgeville in Pretoria back when salons only focused on relaxers and being exposed to products like Black Like Me, Mabel Ledwaba wondered if whether the only beauty treatments black women needed in her community were just limited to relaxers and curls.
This curiosity led to her pursuing a career in the beauty industry, first as an employee for major personal care and beauty companies, later as an entrepreneur.

The Oral History Association (OHASA) will hold its national conference under the theme “The world in troubled times: Oral History Challenges and Opportunities”
In 2021 Charlotte Mannya Maxeke would have turned 150 years of age, making the celebration a very important milestone in the historiography and collection of new research of South Africa. To compliment this milestone, South Africa is currently experiencing what some may call a women leadership crisis and gender-based violence against women. It is necessary to silence and reflect on the teachings of the giants of the 20th century.
