Whilst the world and country’s focus and resources have rightfully been redirected to the novel coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2, HIV has not gone away and is far from over. We must not lose sight of other present risks. The Transport Education Training Authority (TETA) is one of the 21 SETAs mandated to facilitate skills development and training in different economic sectors of South Africa – they will be resurfacing and refocusing awareness on the ever-present risk of HIV/AIDS amid the Covid-19 pandemic under the theme, “FOCUS: HIV still needs our attention”.

In a new regulatory development, the Employment and Labour Department gazetted a consolidated directive on occupational health and safety measures during COVID-19. This calls into question the rights of employees and whether or not employers have the right to implement a mandatory workplace vaccination policy. What do worker’s rights look like in this regard – can an employer force to take the vaccine and can you lose your job is you refuse to get vaccinated?

The Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders is the flagship program of the U.S. Government’s Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Established in 2014, the Fellowship has brought nearly 4,400 young leaders from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for academic and leadership training. The Fellows, between the ages of 25 and 35, are accomplished innovators and leaders in their communities and countries.

As we mark the 'end' of Women's month, it is only fair for us to honesty address all the proverbial elephants in the room that undermine efforts to achieve gender equality.  In 2021, the labour of millions of invisible women who bear and raise children, work the land, and run households to enable men to be part of the formal economy remains unrecognized and unquantified.  

We’re in conversation with Yolisa Shugu, an author and Programmes Co-ordinator for SGS Consulting. She is of the view that the introduction of a Basic Income Grant is an opportunity for economists and policy makers to genuinely scrutinize the true policy reforms that need to be implemented.

Teacher supply and demand is a complex matter. The ultimate aim is to have a teacher in front of every class, today and for the foreseeable future. This also implies an ideal class size. In SA, the ideal class size is tacit, and not explicit, as there are no class size norms.

If SA were to lower the pupil-teacher ratio from the current 30 to a typical middle income country level of around 25, it would need an additional 100,000 teachers. But can this be done is SA seen that we’re going to be hit by a large scale of teacher retrenchments in the foreseeable future?

The University of Fort Hare has announced a day of mourning and a number of remembrance activities in honour of Nosicelo Mtebeni, a fourth-year law student who was allegedly killed and had her body dismembered by her boyfriend after an alleged altercation at her boyfriend's residence earlier last week.  

Some of her body parts were discovered in bags placed outside the boyfriend's residence, while her head and hands were discovered inside his room. It is alleged that he used a handsaw to dismember her body.

The university has announced that it will also launch the Nosicelo Mtebeni Women’s Month Public Lecture that will feature a Constitutional Court judge keynote speaker every year during Women’s Month.

In 2014, Judge Kate O'Regan and Advocate Vusi Pikoli chaired a commission of inquiry into policing in Khayelitsha. The inquiry made some headway into implementing the 20 recommendations submitted after its conclusion, but residents living in Khayelitsha said they were far from being any safer.

The systemic failures addressed by the Commission include the failure of the police and other criminal justice actors to police, investigate and convict perpetrators of violence within our communities.

Seven years down the line, how far are we with the implementation of the Commission’s recommendations?
