The Voice & The Coach

For Episode 13 of The Voice & The Coach, Dan O'Connor and Mark Holick take the conversation to the Okanagan to chat with the head coach of the Kelowna Rockets, Kris Mallette. Mallette is a former WHL player who played nine seasons of professional hockey before pursuing coaching. Mallette joined the Rockets coaching staff in 2014-15 in time to help them win a league championship, and since then has been a mainstay on their bench.

In February, 2020 Kris Mallette was named the head coach of the Rockets, but his path has been anything but easy. In this conversation he talks about some of the ups and downs that have accompanied his six-year tenure with the Rockets, and also dives into some of the key players and memorable moments that have all played a part in his hockey story.

We're back! Episode 12 of The Voice & The Coach features a conversation with one of the most highly respected, passionate, talented, and entertaining personalities that the WHL has to offer.

Cam Moon is a former WHL/SJHL goaltender who has since gone on to call over 1500 WHL games with the Red Deer Rebels. Since 1998-99 he's been the voice behind one of the most consistent and successful organizations in all of junior hockey, and he's got a vault full of stories to share because of it.

This week on The Voice & The Coach, Dan and Mark are joined by three-time Stanley Cup winner Andy Moog (8:37). Moog was also a four-time NHL all-star and a veteran of nearly 850 combined NHL games (regular season + playoffs).

Fun fact: Andy Moog is tied with Chris Osgood for the best career NHL winning percentage (.580) among goaltenders NOT enshrined into the Hockey Hall of Fame.

What was it like to practice and play with the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Paul Coffey, Mark Messier and Jari Kurri? Why were the final four seasons of his career his most successful ones statistically? Why didn't he accept a contract offer with the Vancouver Canucks after the 1997-98 season?

For Episode 10 of The Voice & The Coach, Dan and Mark are joined by the long-time Equipment Manager of the WHL's Prince George Cougars, Ramandeep "Chico" Dhanjal (6:42). Dhanjal has spent the previous 12 seasons (and nearly 1000 games) working with the Cougars as both the Equipment Manager and Athletic Therapist (Until 2014-15). Prior to his arrival in Prince George, Dhanjal captured a Royal Bank Cup championship in 2008 with the SJHL's Humboldt Broncos.

Internationally Dhanjal has represented Canada on numerous occasions and was recently named to Canada's staff for the 2020 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

For Episode 9 of the Voice & The Coach, Dan and Mark spend some time with one of the Top 100 hockey players ever. No, seriously, there's a Top 100 list and he's on it.

Scott Niedermayer's list of hockey accomplishments is impressive to say the least:

- He's won four Stanley Cups.
- He's won two Olympic Gold Medals.
- He's one of only two players ever to win a Memorial Cup, a World Junior Gold Medal, A World Championship, a World Cup of Hockey, an Olympic Gold Medal and a Stanley Cup.
- He's a proud member of the Hockey Hall of Fame.

In this conversation he talks about sharing an Olympic experiences with the likes of Mario Lemieux, Wayne Gretzky, Steve Yzerman and Sidney Crosby. Also, In 2007 with the Anaheim Ducks, he handed the Stanley Cup to his teammate/brother Rob, four years removed from his Devils defeating Rob's Ducks in Game 7 of the 2003 Final. Episode 8 of The Voice & The Coach features a conversation with one of the most successful junior hockey coaches out there today. But before he got into coaching, Dave Lowry suited up in over 1000 NHL games with Vancouver, St. Louis, Florida, San Jose and Calgary. A few notable facts about Dave Lowry:

- He led the 95-96 Florida Panthers in playoff goal scoring (The Year of the Rat).
- He coached/played alongside Jarome Iginla.
- He coached Connor McDavid at the World Juniors.
- In seven seasons of head coaching in the WHL (Calgary, Victoria, Brandon), he's NEVER had a losing season.

In Episode 7 of The Voice & The Coach, Dan and Mark are joined by award-winning sportscaster Dan Shulman. Shulman currently works for ESPN, providing play-by-play for both Major League Baseball and College Basketball. He also calls a select number of Toronto Blue Jays games each season on Sportsnet. Clutch home runs, game-winning three-point shots and World Series championships are all on his resume. During this conversation, Shulman recaps some of his all-time favourite moments from the ballpark and the hardcourt, and also shares his memories from a Sunday Night Baseball broadcast in 2011 when he, Bobby Valentine and Orel Hershiser had to balance calling a baseball game, while also reporting the news reports of Osama bin Laden's death. Rod Pedersen has an incredible story to tell. He's an accomplished broadcaster, author, blogger and recovery coach who has established himself as one of Canada's greatest and most authentic sports personalities. In this conversation with Dan and Mark, Rod talks about his WHL broadcasting career with Prince Albert and Regina, his 20-year career calling games for the CFL's Saskatchewan Roughriders, and his battle with addiction that took him to "rock bottom" but then set him on the path towards the ultimate comeback story. In Episode 5 of the The Voice & The Coach, Dan and Mark are joined by Indigenous hockey player Wacey Rabbit, a proud member of the Blackfoot Nation from the Blood reserve in Alberta. Wacey Rabbit was the 2006 WHL Humanitarian of the Year, a 2007 Memorial Cup Champion with the Vancouver Giants and has spent the past 13 seasons playing professional hockey.
