They had maps that were flat out wrong and equipment that didn’t really work if the weather was bad. They had to rely on the hope that nature would cooperate with their desire to make it to the other side of the world. Many men had the experience and drive to make the journey successfully. Sometimes though, that prize would remain out of reach.
